What are some good one volume accounts of the Vietnam War?

by enjoyeverysangwich

I'm interested in reading a bit more about Vietnam, I only know very basic facts I've picked up here and there and haven't read anything detailed on the conflict as of yet. I'm looking for something along the lines of "A World At Arms" by Gerhard Weinberg, just for Vietnam instead of World War II. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I've got the perfect book for you!

Perfect Spy by Larry Berman

This book covers the life of Phạm Xuân Ẩn, a communist agent who was born in South Vietnam, educated in America, and worked in Saigon for several major new agencies (Time Magazine, Reuters and the New York Herald Tribune); all while spying for North Vietnam.

The story of his life is incredible and it's told through a backdrop of the major events that shaped the outcome of Vietnamese and American Cold War history; centered around a man that most Americans have never even heard of.

I'm very, very far from being an expert on the conflict, but I've always admired the late Marilyn B. Young's 1991 volume The Vietnam Wars, as it was the first work I read that didn't solely concentrate on the US aspect. Although it's been superceded in many ways by other scholars - a significant number of whom were directly inspired by Young - I've still found it a very worthwhile volume, and an accessible read (although I know that Young's work has been critiqued over the years). I also cannot recommend highly enough Lien-Hang Nguyen's Hanoi's War, which frames the conflict from a North Vietnamese rather than US perspective. Although, this might be a book that is slightly more narrow in focus than what you are looking for. As I said, though, there are people here with far greater expertise in the conflict's historiography, so I would wait for their suggestions!
