How accurate is Blood, Sex & Royalty?

by Dense-Swim-4048

Hello folks! I’m a lover of Tudor history as was excited to see a new show centering Anne Boleyn. I’ve read texts analyzing previous series about the Tudors and given how new this one is can’t seem to find any on this series. My initial impression is that the series is molding and editing Anne’s story to fit more modern sensibilities. While I love the emphasis on her beliefs and (despite the title) a balance in how her story is told, the isolated narrative feels very… off to me. However, I’m not a professional and would love the perspective of those who are. Thoughts?

Hello!

I am not a professional in Tudor History but have loved and been fascinated by it for as long as I can remember and studied a lot about it. Having loved Anne Boleyn and her story I was intrigued to know about a new series that delves into her story. I also really like the historian who is said to help with the docuseries.

That being said:

My first thoughts are the title of the show. It seems very tacky to me for the richness and depth and respect the story deserves. Anne Boleyn was not “all about sex” as the show seems to want to focus so much on. It just cheapens the history in my mind and is a shame. I’m not saying that sex wasn’t a part of her story but to turn it into a steamy docuseries where that is foremost important is unfortunate. Her story is full of SO MUCH more. Strategy, politics and her. Not just sex. She was a very strong and strategic woman. Not a bimbo.

Second, as I started watching it I was so disappointed in not only the modern music being added but also the modern things they had Anne say. It is NOT historically accurate in this sense. I am guessing they use main facts of her life but very loosely wrote the script otherwise. And it is not meant to be historically accurate I don’t think. I think it’s aiming towards a different audience and I don’t think it has historians in mind cause it made my skin crawl 😂

Third, the costumes do not do justice 🤦🏼‍♀️ as that time period is RICH in beautiful costuming, this show took it more casually and it really cheapened it. So sad!!

That being said I turned it off 5 minutes in. So maybe I am not the best person to give a review. But it’s a skip in my eyes. I can’t deal with the modern twist and inaccuracies and overly sexual content.
