What would a viking age English city look like?

Would it look like a typical medieval city or would it be more primitive? I know the game assassin's creed valhalla gets some things wrong, but did it get the architecture for houses and cities right?

A good source is what the Engglish city of York looked like 1000 years ago. It was called Jorvik.

Following a huge archaeological dig in the 1970s, the Viking history of York really came to life.

I haven't played assassins creed so can't comment on that.

The word "primative" is also somewhat relative. Industry and technology in Britain changed relatively slowly until the last few centuries. Therefore, a person in Britain in 1600 thrown back in time 500 years would find things like farming and industry to be far more similar than if they were thrown forward 100 years.

However, in terms of what we know about Jorvik, it had a complex and international economy. It was also ethnically diverse. Housing styles were long houses, with ceilings going low to the floor.

As with much of the centuries before and after, most industry would take place outside as houses and buildings were dark and smokey.

Industries included bone carving, wood turning, leather working, among others.

For visuals, if you can't visit York in person (it's good fun if you do go!) then a Google image search of "jorvik" has lots of pictures of the reconstructed town to give you a feel.
