Can a historian please explain the taiping rebellion to me like I am a child?

Hi. I would like to learn about this as it came up in a history memes subreddit. I am going to look here and online and maybe at some YouTube videos and then compare. Cheers!

Rana Mitter, Frances Woodhead, and Julia Lovell offer a really good introduction to - and analysis of - the Taiping Rebellion in this 2011 episode of BBC radio's In Our Time series. I certainly found it very informative and it may be exactly what you're looking for.

/u/EnclavedMicrostate (our resident expert!) offers extensive suggestions on English-language scholarship on the rebellion in this post. They also offer some really cogent thoughts on recognition of the rebellion which might be something along the lines you're looking for. And this post contains links to lots of their threads on the entire subject.
