Prostitution is often referred to as the oldest profession. How common was it in early civilizations? What were the attitudes towards it? Was it possible to barter for sex before the development of currency?

Did the Soviet Union have plans to invade the United States

A while ago I saw this tweet: https://twitter.com/ayyy_vuh/status/1288844374705688576

Just wondering if there's any truth to the claim that the Soviet Union had no serious plans to invade the United States?

How did 4/4 and 3/4 become the standard rhythms in music in the Western world?

I would include 2/4 or 6/8 as variants of the above rhythms.

I'm wondering why weird time signatures like 5/4 and 7/12 aren't common.

What is the difference between Prussia and Germany?

As a complete novice to history (as I’m sure you can tell from the question) I was shocked to discover that Prussia still existed into the 20th century. I had always assumed that it was in some way incorporated into other countries by that point but it appears to have existed simultaneously with Germany around the period of the First World War.

So my question is more specifically, during the period of the early 20th Century, what was the difference between Prussia and Germany and how did they interact?

I realise that some of my complete misunderstanding might be related to the workings of the German Empire, so I would love some expansion on how the German Empire was governed and organised.

Thank you for any responses.

US culture questions: In the Janis Joplin hit Me and Bobby McGee, she sings "I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna / I was playin' soft while Bobby sang the blues." When and why did harpoon become a term for a harmonica?

As a bonus, when did the dirty red bandanna bindle toting traveler become symbolic? If I went to train yards in the 30s/40s/50s would I see a bunch of guys sitting around with red bandannas full of stuff playing their harmonicas?

Those were the two that came to mind, but was translation a thought as they traveled?

Would have Japan attacked Russia if Germany captured Moscow in ww2

I have seen many people across the internet that claim that Japan would have attacked Russia if Moscow was captured by the Germans during ww2. Can any of y'all send sources that back up these claims.

During the Gallic Wars, around 1/3 of the Gauls died and another third were enslaved. Was this level of violence normal for Romans/peoples of this time ?

I don't know much about ancient history but I was surprised by the violence during the Gallic wars : there are many slaughters, and Caesar doesn't even seem ashamed of it since he tells about it himself in his book. 2/3 of the inhabitants of such a big region (it is not just a city that was slaughtered/looted) seems huge !

I know many wars killed a lot of people, but for example WW2 didn't proportionally depopulate even Eastern Europe (while we had industrial ways of killing), or the Thirty Years's War which is considered very deadly "only" made Germany lose around 1/3 of its population (and it was over 30 years, not 8).

Am I wrong with the impression the Gallic Wars were particularly deadly ? If I am not, was it normal at this time ? Or these numbers may be inflated ? Were others periods/civilizations as violent (I'm thinking about the conquest of the Americas ?)?

Were there French claims on the throne of England?

Many Kings of England claimed the throne of France but we never hear of the opposite. Was it a thing? Did some French monarchs ever held a claim on the throne of England?

Here I exclude William the Conqueror as he wasn't culturally French nor did he hold the title of King of France.

How "uniform" were the crusaders appearance/gear

Hello!

I was watching Kingdom of Heaven and noticed how the knights had various styles of helmets from one another... my question is how cohesive was the appearance of the knights? I figure it would be a major task to supply everyone with the same gear, so would we have expected to see alot of variation in appearance amongst knights?

thanks

How did the Armenians end up with a quarter of Jerusalem and how were they able to keep it?

As the title states. The old city is split into 4 quarters: Muslim, Jewish, Christian, and Armenian. How were the Armenians able to negotiate and keep a quarter of the old city in their denomination while all the other Christian denominations have to share a quarter? Also, how were the Armenians able to keep their quarter separate and not absorbed into a larger christian half?

Was oral sex a creation of modern times?

Trust me, I'm a big fan. But even so it seems like a somewhat illogical thing to do instinctively. You could even say that society partaking in this act currently is rather weird.

So is this something that humanity has only started doing in the last 'however many' years or have we always been horny bastards and this is something that we have always done?

Did People Know About Thomas Jefferson's Daughters?

I was reading William Wells Brown's Clotel; or, The President's Daughter: A Narrative of Slave Life in the United States (1853), about the (fictional) daughters that Jefferson had with one of his slaves. This was less than thirty years after his death, when his actual children might still be alive. Were Jefferson's children by slaves popular knowledge when Brown wrote his novel? Would his audience have been familiar with the idea that Jefferson had children by his slaves?

Is there any reliable book or site where I can learn more about the relationship between The Vikings and The Picts?

I have read some sites that say that the Vikings never met the Picts which is literally impossible because there have been many vikings objects found on the Highlands which can be seen in the Edinburgh Museum. On the other hand, I have also read that it seems that Pict and Vikings might have been traders which is highly possible because of the close distance between the scottish Shetland Islands and the Feroe Islands which was an old ancient viking settlement.

In many media portrayels of time travel, saving JFK from being assassinated most often results in the United States engaging Russia in nuclear war soon thereafter. Is there any actual evidence that shows JFK and/or his administration would have pursued war if he had not been killed?

Short Answers to Simple Questions | September 16, 2020

Previous weeks!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.

  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.

  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.

  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.

  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.

  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).

  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

What would be the status of planks on a siege engine. Neat and fresh or dark and gritty link in movies?

When we see movies of medieval times the siege engines are often dark stained gritty planks. But what would be the actual status of these planks especially when the siege just begon. Wouldn't they new fresh planks?

Also most planks shown are nice and straight, would this be a requirement or would they just cut up slabs and nail them together leaving a lot of gaps. And would they strip all the planks or leave bark etc just to go quicker?

Were the early Middle Ages in Europe a sexual age?

I ran across this paragraph in a book I'm currently reading:

"Take the Middle Ages in Europe. The early part was a frankly sexual age. Men mostly wore their hair long and many wore beards. The hair of young girls was usually long and loose, and plaited or braided in older women. Nudity was no cause for shame: women raised their skirts deliberately as a mark of honor for great men."

  • Wendy Cooper, Hair, 1971, p. 108

Is there anything to these assertions? Sadly, the author doesn't cite any sources in the book itself.
