Was Napoleon Bonaparte's Russian Campaign really his biggest mistake?

I am really curious about this period of time. Any answers would be appreciated. I have heard some people think it could have worked brilliantly if he had prepared for the weather and advanced more slowly. Other people I have talked to, (mostly online), think it was an idiotic move no matter what he did.

Did WW2 pilots unload there guns to slow down before landing or any other tactics to decrease speed?

I’ve been playing a lot of War Thunder lately and it seems to be a common tactic to shoot your guns on your aircraft if you are going to fast when trying to land. For some aircraft it works pretty effectively and I was wondering if this was actually a tactic employed in WW2. I’d assume it probably wouldn’t be since there would be a chance of hitting someone on the group or doing damage to something where ever your bullets would’ve landed, but maybe I’m wrong.

A recent PBS article states that organized law enforcement in the U.S. has its roots in slave patrols. How accurate is this, and what did law enforcement look like beforehand?

If someone broke into a dwelling, would the homeowner call for police to investigate? How would violent crimes against community members be resolved?

How were ethnic Moroccan colonial soldiers treated by supporters of the Nationalist government during the Spanish Civil War?

I understand that they were widely used as "shock troops" for the nationalists and were used in propaganda when it came to accentuating the martial bravery of the nationalist forces. I'm curious as to whether or not the marginal ethnic difference of the Moroccan soldiers ever became an issue amongst supporters of Franco who were reactionary in their views on ethnicity/race? Was this even a big deal in terms of Falangist political thought at all? Also, what was the reaction of the forces of the Spanish Republic, as well as Spanish communists, anarchists, etc-- to the use of the "colonials" in battle as well as when it came to "pacification"?

How and why did the Republican and Democratic parties of the US switch ideals?

The Republicans fought to abolish slavery during the Civil War and the Dems fought to keep it yet in the 1960s it was the Dems fighting for equal rights for blacks but the Republicans fillibustered against it.

What happened to cause the 2 parties to shift to their polar opposites and why?

Is this FDR story true?

Hi, my dad mentioned a story to me that he wanted to research/make sure was true. In it, FDR (or perhaps another wartime leader, it could easily be another premier) is visiting a bomb factory and comes across a man sweeping the floors. He asks him what he‘s doing and he says that he’s dropping bombs on Germany and winning the war. FDR (or someone else) asks how and he says that if dust gets into the bomb it won‘t work, so by clearing the dust, this man is helping the war effort. This story is about how everyone is vital and that everyone makes a difference. If this is true and not just an urban legend, could someone drop a link to something verifying this? Me and my dad have been trying for ages to see if it’s true to no avail, so any help would be appreciated!

What were the goals of moderates during the French Revolution? Were there many members of the nobility that opposed the current regime but did not seek to abolish the monarchy?

I've taken an interest in learning about the French Revolution, but only know a rough timeline of events rather than any details so I have a few questions. To what degree did noble and non-noble moderates during the revolution cooperate? What were some of the goals of moderate groups during the revolution? How were these groups treated by more radical elements of the revolution?

I'm also interested in any entry-level books on the revolution if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

Why did Hannibal invade through the alps? Why not invade by sea?

The Carthaginians were famous for their navies, and I dont see why he had to go through the alps. He lost half his troops after all. He might have been able to take rome if he hadn't.

On that point, its a wonder rome didnt experience more sea invasions. The last sea based invasion I know of was from King Pyrus.

How were dogs trained in roman and medieval times? Were they a lot harsher on these dogs? Did they (to our current-day standards) abuse them? How effective were these dogs?

I know there were many owners who dearly loved their dogs, I recall seeing a quote from a dogs grave made by a roman. But obviously we treat our pups differently nowadays compared to even a measly 50 years ago.

Note: I'm mainly talking about working dogs. Herding, hunting, guarding, or even war. Bonus question: How were these dogs even trained, and how did the knowledge spread?

Insights from other cultures are definitely welcome, E.G the feudal Japanese, the Chinese or even the aboriginals and Aztecs/Mayans/Indians/Inuit/....

I'm a timetraveling dog enthusiast. I go back to prehistoric, greek, roman and medieval times in europe. What dog breeds do I recognize? What breeds are completely new to a modern man and are worth checking out? Are there any differences in behavior with the "recognisable" breeds back then vs now?

Would be cool if I could see some images too, would be cool to see a dog from the past CGI'd to how it'd have looked like :)
