Question on C Warren Hollister Medieval Europe A Shirt History

I am reading this above mentioned book and in it he quotes "a modern french historian" in reference to Blanche of Castile as stating "she may be counted among king's of France". There are no notes just a further reading section where he lists several women's history historians. Does any have an idea who he may be referencing specifically? I'd like to read that author.

Do people in Northern Cyprus consider themselves Turkish or Cypriots? Has it always been this way, or was there a transition somewhere along the line?

I know the Cypriot dispute ended with most Greek Cypriots (aka Cypriots) being deported to the southern part of the island.

However, I’m curious as to what this meant for those left living in the north. Did/do they still consider themselves Cypriots? Is there any semblance of Cyprus nationalism or pride, either today or historically? Is there a lot of animosity amongst the citizens towards their southern counterparts? Is there still cultural homogeny between the two “countries,” or has the north adopted norms more aligned with Turkey than the Greek islands/southern Cyprus?

I’m super curious because this isn’t something that is really covered or talked about often. Cyprus seems to be left on the back burner when talking about nations split in half by conflict. Korea, Vietnam, Sudan... But what about Cyprus?

What's the real story behind "Let them eat cake" ?

Marie-Antoinette, supposedly, said "let them eat cake" as the unwashed masses rioted for bread.

There are a few versions of this story, which one is the right one?

In one, Marie-Antoinette is an out-of-touch aristocrat who has never experienced hunger, wondering why the peasants can't simply settle for a tasty treat in the same way a child might say "why can't we go to the bank and get more money?"

In another, it's a mistranslation and lacking context. As I've heard it, French law said that if bakeries were out of bread, they had to sell fancy brioche at the same price, and she wondered why the peasants couldn't eat brioche.

And in a third, this story never happened. It's sort of an urban legend, predating the French Revolution by at least a century, that became attached to a particular historical figure who fit the characteristics of this story.

Which, if any of these, is the real story?

When did the shift from wooden shits to metal war ships happen?

When I have seen textbooks of navy boats from the American Civil War, the pictures show wooden boats, but when you see pictures from World War I every nation's fleet is entirely ships made from metal. I know that 50 years is a long time, but when did this drastic change happen and how did all the major countries get on board with it.

Help with 8th Grade Thesis Paper

My 8th Grader is researching and writing a thesis paper on Women in the Workforce. She is specifically looking the history of women's work in the United States from Post Civil-War to today. Right now she is looking at the specific jobs women took throughout this time, the attitudes towards women working outside of the home, the necessity and the negative and positives of women entering the workforce, and minority women in the workforce.

If you have any thoughts on this or could recommend and sources that would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Are most events told in Untold History of the US in Netflix as drastic as they are portrayed?

I understand America hasn’t always been the good guy, but this documentary takes it to another level. I understand there’s a lot of information covered on there so I’ll focus on three things. The use of nuclear bombs on Japan. The doc states that the USA intelligence agency had conducted a study which declared that japan would have surrendered without the use of nuclear bombs because they were scared of dealing with the soviets. Is there still a debate whether using the bombs would have saved American lives or is that just misinformation?

How popular was Wallace? I’m surprised I’ve never heard of him. He sounds like a 40s Bernie sanders. It sounds like he had a lot of support but it was due to in party opposition that he lost it.

Since I watched a knight's tale, I was curious about the black prince, I learnt that he was never king, so why is he famous? I know he's called the black prince because of his black armour. Is he famous because he was a skilled knight or what?

The Parthenon and the Colleseum have been in ruins for centuries, but every 20 years the Japanese tear down the 1,300-year-old Ise Jingu grand shrine in Japan and rebuild it like new. What do historians think of the "living," nature of Japanese history vs the decay of Western historical sites?

I have a probably heretical desire — I'd love to walk through the great sites of history as they were, or as close to how they were as possible. I'd love for them to be in use as functional sites as opposed to things that can only be viewed from behind glass barriers.

Our historical sites are often left to continuously decay, and they're of little use to the living of today beyond the archeology research they allow (which is certainly worthwhile), and their tourism/cultural value.

The Japanese seem to not have the let-it-decay philosophy. Old buildings are often continuously rebuilt with new materials and used/readapted. Only the essence and design of the original structures are maintained.

Is the Japanese approach only viable because of the unbroken chain of use? Does it make sense to repair Notre-Dame because it was being used right before the fire, but not the Roman forum because people had stopped using it for centuries?

How do Historians view this rebuild-it-as-new philosophy? Why do western countries not practice this?

Who are/were the Chalcednonians, Arians, Nestorians?

I've been studying Christianity a bit as late but can't find much information on these apparently dead sects of the religion. Apparently they were deemed heretical at some point, but by who or why I'm not sure. Do these groups exist today at all? If not, what was their ultimate fate?

Thursday Reading & Recommendations | April 02, 2020

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history

  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read

  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now

  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes

  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

Thank you everyone who participated in /r/HistoricalAITA for April Fools, 2020! Here is the full rundown of submissions, and more importantly, the tallying of the judgements!

Thank you to everyone for making our April Fools, 2020 theme one of the most enjoyable April Fools on the sub so far! We were blown away by the great content, the great turnout, and the great press as well! If you enjoyed it, please check out the archives for the past April Fools events, and if you enjoyed this, while it is a one-off, /r/AmItheButtface allows submissions like this year round!

How to become a papyrologist?

Hi everyone, I hope this is ok to post here, since another subreddit I posted in doesn’t seem that active. Recently I’ve started to consider taking up being a papyrologist as a job, since it’s an aspect of history that I find very important and interesting. However I can’t find a lot of information on the matter and I was wondering could someone here put me in the right direction. I’m just wondering what is usually required of someone to become a papyrologist, e.g. what courses should I take and how long on average does it take for one to be qualified in the field? Just wondering but would anyone know what the salary is like as-well?

Thanks in advance

Any information on the Goedendag or Mancatcher?

Hi, for a Year 10 assignment I have to make a "commercial" on why the Mancatcher is better than the Goedendag. Specifically I have to talk about the advantages of the Mancatcher, disadvantages of the Goedendag, and the Mancatchers use in battle. This is a "pair" activity but not really, your "partner" has to do a commercial on why the other weapon is better, so my partner says the Goedendag is better than the Mancatcher.

Anyways, while other pairs got normal weapons like the halberd, mace or arquebus, we got 2 weird weapons that there is like no information on. We are the only pair that got 2 weird weapons (some pairs did get 1).

Both my partner and I have tried searching for sources on either but we can't find much information anywhere except for youtube. This alone would not be a problem, since its a commercial, however 25% of the marks (5/20) comes from the bibliography.

So essentially, does anybody have any sources on the Goedendag or Mancatcher?

Generally, the history we are taught is, “the Depression started, then FDR responded with the New Deal.” But Hoover was less than a year into his term when the market crashed.

Why is the history of the Philippines so diverged from Indonesia + Malaysia?

My parents are actually from the Philippines. It's interesting...Filipino (Tagalog) has a lot of Malay words. Same ""Malay race". Many national heroes of the Philippines had a dream of a "Greater Malaysia" because Malays were divided by political history.

I know you could say Spanish colonialism, but from my understanding Filipinos accepted Spanish rule very quickly? Also why did Islam not spread nearly to the extent as in the other Malay countries?

How was Muhammad familiar with the Jewish and Christian stories and traditions?

Arabs were polytheists before Islam, but Islam is an Abrahamic religion that builds upon the Jewish and Christian scriptures. Are there any historical explanations for how Muhammad come into contact with the Jewish and Christian traditions? Of course the Islamic tradition supposes that Muhammad simply received his revelation from God, and so I have found it difficult to find any information about how Muhammad, who was an illiterate Bedouin merchant, understood Jewish and Christian beliefs. Can someone give me a more historically grounded picture of the relationship between Judaism and Christianity in Muhammad's life and/or in the time an place that he lived. Thanks.

Could Princes in the Holy Roman Empire create their own nobility?

So I can find lots about Imperial immediacy, but what I've been wondering is if and when each state within the Empire had internal aristocracies.

i.e. could the Duke of Bavaria create Counts within Bavaria, as opposed to Imperial Counts?

Also, was this something that developed and changed over time?

Thanks in advance!

Could the IJN Shinano have posed a serious threat to the USN in the Pacific?

The IJN Shinano was a huge aircraft carrier built by the Imperial Japanese Navy near the end of the war. It was huge because it was originally the 3rd Yamato Class Battleship, but was converted to be an aircraft carrier mid-construction.

There were 3 different ideas for the design of the ship. The IJN command eventually settled on a compromise design which made it basically a Support Carrier. It would have about 47 aircraft for self defense and carry a bunch of supplies for other Carriers. So they could stay at sea longer without having to return to port.

However, as soon as the Shinano left port to travel to another port it was spotted and sunk by the USS Archerfish, an American submarine. The reason it was sunk so easily is because the ship wasn't finished and I think the internal bulkheads weren't completed. To this day it's the biggest ship ever sunk by a submarine.

It was no doubt a devastating loss to the IJN. But if it had avoided being sunk, what kind of risk would it have posed to the USN?

How close to Germany come to overwhelming the RAF in the Battle of Britain, and how close was public / political opinion in favour of making a deal with Germany?

I read a lot about how the Luftwaffe came close to destroying the RAF, but Hitler at the last minute changed their orders to attack cities, but I was wandering how accurate this statement is. Was the Luftwaffe REALLY that close to dstorying the RAF? Couldn't they have just moved their airfields North and continued flying from their?

And before the Blitz was the peace camp ever as powerful / influential as people say?

Mny thks
