After doing some research on Chinese history, I was absolutely astounded at how much land the Han culture expanded into and permantantly assimilated into the Han Chinese culture.

I'm here to ask how they were able to culturally assimilate so much land without succumbing to many of the other problems other powers of the age faced.

The US bombed North Vietnam thoroughly, but to my understanding the US never launched a major ground invasion to capture Hanoi and end the North Vietnamese leadership. It seems to me like the US simply let the North Vietnamese state operate without non-bombing based pressure while they focused all their effort in South Vietnam. Would it have not been more effective to defeat the North Vietnamese in North Vietnam, to stop the North Vietnamese from supplying the south? I'm curious why. Grasias.

You probably know the resistance group which was established by Sophie Scholl and her friends during WW2 in Germany. I’m from austria and i can remember that teachers have spent hours trying to teach us why the group was so important. As long as i can remember they haven’t done anything besides dealing flyers in their home town and their university. Important resistance group which supported the allied troops weren’t even mentioned. I know that they were executed for their actions but i still can’t see how they have changed anything in germany.

Basically, were black teachers who previously had been teaching black students in black schools able to continue teaching?

I often see people claiming that China's culture was totally destroyed during the cultural revolution by the CCP, that Taiwan has more chinese culture than the mainland etc.

To what extent is this true? What aspects have been "destroyed" and what aspects still remain the same?

My Grandpa is aged 90 with dementia which has deteriorated rapidly. He lives in a home (UK) and they have a model of a Hawker Hurricane with a french flag on the tail. Ive Googled it and found that it is a british plane but i am not sure where the French flag comes in?

My Grandad served in the RAF after the war and he often points to it but he is confused about the french flag. I'd like to talk to him about it but i dont know much about the plane. Does anyone know why it has a french flag?

It would be amazing to understand some history about the plane so I can prompt his memory and we can discuss it.

All I know about it is that the advent of mechanized armies killed it. I don’t entirely understand how. At least to me, it still seems somewhat practical to have a trench, as it seems like it would still offer some decent protection.

At what point in Jewish history do the Jews become more strictly monotheistic? My current understanding (that I want to see alternatives too) is that Judaism was polytheistic, until after the Babylonian captivity when the Torah was composed--and after an encounter with a more monotheistic culture (Zoroastrianism, even though it is a dualistic system). Is it this encounter with the Persians that made the Jews monotheistic?

Also, when do the Jews see themselves as different than other Semitic tribes and cultures? When do they see themselves as special, elect, and chosen by their God and thus different from the cultural context which they emerge from? For example, most Semitic cultures practiced human and child sacrifice, and so did the Jews, but isn't it the case that they gradually abandoned that process and saw themselves as different?

I was reading "unbroken" as a casual weekend read and noticed that there were many mentions of Norwegians in Ofuna POW camp. Why would the Japanese navy keep a country under German occupation's people in a camp for high priority US prisoners? It didn't seem like it made any sense as Norway had little information to give and little strategic value for the Japanese. Are there sources validating these accounts of Norwegians in Ofuna? If so, where did they come from? Captured from a Norweigian ship in pacific? What were they doing in the pacific?
