I am currently in Okinawa and have the privilege to visit the Peace and Memorial Park. My great uncle was a CPL in the USMC and was killed on April 5th 1945. Most of my preliminary research has shown that the USMC were not engaged in any land battles in the northern part of the island until April 6th.

I want to make the most out of my museum visit and find out as much information as I can. Does anyone know if they kept a fair amount of marines on navel ships, or are aware of small skirmishes between April 1-5th that may have caused his death? Thank you in advance!

After the Nazis came to power, what was it like for the already existing German military. Were there a large scale reshuffling? Did the military as a whole accept the Nazis (and the rule of Hitler specifically) with open arms? And did any high ranking German generals or admirals refuse and what became of them?

So in the late 1800s era it seems that many in the English peerage found despite their titles and land they were rapidly running out of money. At the same time there were many Americans who were suddenly very rich and decided to marry their daughters into these aristocratic families to gain a greater level of social standing that money alone couldn't buy. How were these arrangements made? Did the rich family pay large sums of money as part of a marriage contract to infuse cash into the aristocrats coffers or was it less formal than that? How did others look upon these arrangements? Were they basically arranged marriages?

I have read that Holy Bible centuries ago consisted of more books and letters than now. Various popes and influetial people throughout history pulled some unsuitable information from the official Bible. What is potentially written in those missing books and do they still exist?

I've just started playing Crusader Kings 2. You probably get questions about it all the time, but if not, the basic premise is that you play as a fuedal dynasty during the Middle Ages.

As one character dies, their lands are inherited by one (or more, depending) heirs. For a lot of Europe, the default is Gavelkind succession.

My question is how accurate to reality would something like Gavelkind (all land split between the sons) have been. From my very limited reading, I know the name Gavelkind relates to a very specific group of people, but it appears the practice was more widespread throughout Germanic tribes (even if it had different names).

I know Charlemagne split his Empire between his sons, and Charles V of the Habsburg had his Empire split between his brother and son, but was this dictated by any type of law /tradition (like Gavelkind), or was it just something they wanted?

Did laws even exist within realms that dictated how fuedal Lords had their lands inherited, or was there a degree of freedom?

I'm curious what life for immigrants who were coming in at that time was like, and when a new family would be considered "American," as well as the general timeline for picking up more American characteristics such as traditions, language, culture, etc.

This question is based solely on my history knowledge in high school, where I learned that Europeans went crazy over Asian spices and ingredients and that's it. Can I safely assume that food back then was very bland? (Sorry for bad english)

I am a history undergrad and taking a class on Weimar Berlin and decided to write about politics in the press. I am struggling to find proper examples of specific journalists or collectives who specialized in this type of writing. I can find book authors but need to focus on newspapers, tabloids, and magazines. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of boats did they build, how far could they travel theoretically, how many people could fit in a boat?

I'm going through "Revolutionary Russia 1891-1991" by Orlando Figes and he says:

"The worst-affected areas were in Ukraine, where peasants resistance to collectivization was particularly strong and the grain levies were excessively high. This has prompted some historians to argue that the "terror-famine" was a calculated policy of genocide against Ukrainians" (pg 155) and later "But no hard evidence has so far come to light of the regime's intention to kill millions through famine, let alone of a genocide campaign against the Ukrainians. Many parts of Ukraine were ethnically mixed. There is no data to suggest that there was a policy of taking more grain from Ukrainian villages than from the Russians or other ethnic groups in the famine area. And Ukraine was not the only region to suffer terribly from the famine, which was almost as bad in Kazakhstan."

How is this view seen by other historians? I know of Robert Conquest's "Harvest of Sorrows" but I do not remember much of the book.

This might get removed because it’s not actually about history, but i thought I’d ask anyways. I’m your typical young adult trying to figure out what to do with my life and I think a career in historiography would be really gratifying to me, however; I really want to make the world a better place and I don’t see how history directly does that. Obviously it’s important to study history and those who fail to learn the past are bound to repeat it; but how do historians fight climate change? How do historians feed the hungry? How do historians combat violence? I love this field but I would feel selfish if I entered it because it was fun, and not because I believed it was a job that would make the world a better place. What are some practical applications that create real change?

After all, it was the Bourbons and their ultraloyalists that punished Napoleon's officers in the first place.

Can anyone please help me with any book recommendations regarding the topic of women and gender rights in Precolonial Philippines? FYI, I am a master degrees student in Thailand in SE Asian Studies which is an international program. Now, one of my class required for this program is SE Asian Civilization. And we have to do one term paper at the end of the semester. I choose to do this topic for my term paper because I find it interesting but the resources for such books are very hard to find in Thailand.

Does anyone have any advice or should I change my topic to something else?

Can anyone explain why there was both a summer and a Winter Olympics in 1980? I know the Summer Olympics was boycotted by the U.S. and other NATO nations. Did this have to do with them being in the same year?

I found out today that the first recorded tornado in England happened Oct. 17 (today!) 1091. I had no idea that tornadoes even hit Europe, so I found this (and the 1054 tornado in Ireland) pretty interesting. There seems to be a surprisingly fair amount of specific information about the 1091 tornado out there (EX: its wind speed, what it damaged) but I can't seem to find out how we know about this tornado. Does anyone know what documents/manuscripts/books/etc was it first mentioned in? I'd like to learn more about it via a primary source. Thanks!

How much knowledge did the Allies have about the death camps prior to their arrival and liberation? Did the units who found them know what they were getting into when they went through the gates?
