I would like to know if there are any books ( of the narrative history kind ) with the main subject being the Indian Ocean Raid.

I did a bit of research and I found two books, but they don't seem to be written from the action point-of-view.

1. "The Royal Navy in Eastern Waters: Linchpin of Victory 1935-1942", some of the Amazon comments for this emphasize that it is not a narrative history book
2. "Most Dangerous Moment: Japanese Assault on Ceylon, 1942" , only 2 comments for this, one of them being "I was expecting more insight on the raid by the Japanese navy but I read nothing I hadn't already seen from other accounts on this action " ( may still buy it, if there is nothing else out there )

Other than that, doesn't seem like the Indian Ocean Raid was considered eventful enough to have more books written about it.

It's just kind of hard wrapping my head around even the basics of these Empires which apparently spanned almost 900 years? And then you have the East Holy Roman Empire which somehow differed from the rest? and how do they all relate to the Roman Empire that we all know and love?

The Ottoman Empire tried to control Yemen in the 16th and 17th centuries but they failed to control the region and were driven out. Why did they come back to Yemen in the 19th century after it had already proven to be very difficult to control?

With citizens I mean with the ones that had two Athenians parents. I have been searching and I cannot find any information on depth besides saying that they practice the agriculture. Even just a link will help, thank you very much

So in our family we have a Soldier from WWII. He died in action so I was never able to meet him. Is there any subreddits or websites that I can go to see if I can find any historical documents on him and possibly how he lived his life.

I always hear these discussion on whatever issue is going on over there but if I’m being honest, I just don’t have clue what’s going on in the Middle East being from the US myself. That’s why I’m here asking is there any like beginners guide to understand the complex issues between Israel and Palestine?

I’ve read the Count of Monte Cristo a few times and they use interchangeably the currencies Francs Livres Crowns and Pounds.

I’ve found it hard to compare one to another to understand their relative value. I suspect one crown might be three francs.

Can anyone help with the relative value in 1844?

I've heard this claim before, primarily in France, and also read that one of his navigators also helped Columbus "discover" America on his famous 1492 voyage. Supposedly, this navigator already pretty much knew how to get there because of his experience on Cousin's ship.

From what I've read, this claim doesn't have a ton of direct evidence to support it, but I'd love to know what we know about his supposed voyage, what modern historians think, and why it has continued to be a popular claim in some quarters.

This report concerns the conversion of Vladimir the Great to Orthodox Christianity. Nestor supposedly says that envoys sent to the Muslim Volga Bulgarians reported back that they experienced nothing but “sorrow and a great stench”. Presumably this report is coloured by the fact its writer was a Christian of his time and thus poorly disposed to Muslims in general and ghazis in particular. However, assuming this report has any basis in fact, what might the stench be?

Was anyone against slavery in the ancient/medieval world? I’m wondering about the Europe in particular but sources from Africa or Asia would be interesting as well. A quick google search turns up Gregory of Nyssa but not much else.

They all seem to be pretty standardized, with M1 helmets, similar uniforms, and M1911 pistols.

With the vast distances between them, I find it hard to believe that Al-Andalus and the Middle East could've really practiced the exact same form of Islam. Especially when the Emirate/Caliphate of Cordoba was explicitly founded by exiles fleeing the Abbasid Caliphate.

I picked up the first four books in Winston Churchill's "The Second World War" from a local thrift store. I believe that the set is incomplete because the original owner went to Korea and did not return. I would like to research this person and confirm it deny my suspicions. How do I go about this?

how practical would a multishooter/organ gun be in Napoleonic and earlier gunpowder warfare?

I know organ guns existed as an artillery piece but what would the practicality of mass handheld multishooters/organ guns be? Just felt that sine you just wanted mass volley fire may as well try to get as many shots out of a gun as possible.

I’m sure I’m not the first writer in the sub, but I’m trying to write a story that takes place somewhere similar in climate to East/North Texas, and I can’t find any information on what clothes would be worn. I know kings would forgo mink cloaks, but how would they make their status clear? And the soldier issue is even greater, since going faint from the heat in a battle could guarantee a loss, and there wasn’t exactly kevlar in the Middle Ages. I’m going for a vaguely 1400s level of technology and fashion (which I’m sure is very broad), but it’s just hard to find enough information to tighten the date.

I hope this isn't a dumb question but I wasn't able to find anything about this. The goal of the Germans was to interrupt supplies for the UK. But did the Germans target ships traveling back as well? Did those have the same priority or were they slightly less important? Were they guarded just as well?
