In all the movies and things i've seen around this time period i've seen soldiers with guns stand around 50 feet away from each other with no cover, stand in a huge line and shoot at each other. How doesn't anyone run away in the seconds leading up to the firing? I would for sure

As a person with a budding interest in Ancient Greek culture, I have found it frustrating that there seems to be little literature on the unique cultures of all the different poleis during the age of Classical Greece (5th-4th centuries BC). Does anybody here have any recommendations? Thank you very much.

I am sure you all are familiar with the rumor that Hitler's paternal grandfather was Jewish, making him, by Nazi standards, racially impure. I am also sure that many recognize this to be just that - a rumor. Though I won't go into the details (Kershaw explains it best), these claims are entirely unsupported and, in a few regards, outright nonsensical. But why do people keep saying that he was 1/4 Jewish? Is it because the irony has so much appeal, because it helps explain his anti-Semitism, or something else?

I’m trying to read about Ancient history and wish to cover the entire period so I’m looking for some book recommendations about the key historical events. I’d like to start with a broad overview of the earliest settlements then follow the development of Western Civilisation. Any suggestions would be great and if I’m being too vague or anything just tell me so I can be more specific. Thanks in advance.

Let's say I was interested in pirates, or U.S. History. How should I go about researching the topic? Should I look for books, or documentaries, or browse Wikipedia, or something else? Does it change depending on how broad the topic is? And are the low or no cost options any good?

I was wondering what historically was done for armor for archers. Particularly for the wrist area as I imagine a vambrace would work fine with a bow but the steel gauntlets I see tend to have those wide cones coming up and over the wrist which would get in the way of the bowstring.

I'm thinking a traveling archer/warrior type (it's for a book so it doesn't need to be 100% accurate I'm just curious what the historical options would be) so would they then need to have gloves/gauntlets only made of leather to allow for flexibility of the wrist without blocking a bowstring? Or is there some solution in plate form or some hybrid? Time period isn't very relevant, anything from ancient Greece to the Renaissance inclusively is perfectly fine!

I've read about this a long time ago, having a hell of a time on Google, but how was unclaimed land bought in the early settlement days? I vaguely recall in highschool often reading, "this guy bought this land in this year" but it was always unclear from whom they bought it. Usually, "the bank." I know sometimes it started with squatters and stone fences, and/or forced takeover of native territories. But at what point did the dollars typically enter the equation? Thanks!

The traditional narrative is that the Anglo-Saxons were a cultural merger between three different ethnic groups: Angles, Saxons and Jutes. More specifically, that different petty kingdoms belonged to different groups:

• Mercia, Northumbria and East Anglia were Angle Kingdoms
• Middlesex, Wessex, Sussex and Essex were Saxon Kingdoms
• Kent as a Jutish Kingdom

How accurate is this division? Were they genuinely different groups with different languages and cultures? If you walked from Northumbria to Sussex, would you have seen a bigger difference crossing the East Anglia-Essex border than any of the others?

And if they were different groups, at what point had they merged to become a single Anglo-Saxon synthesis?

Does it have something to do with availability? It’s just interesting to me so many recipes call for it, yet we have many different options now for cooking.

Now I’m not suggesting that there is a simple answer as these events happen across hundreds of years, but there is a very clear trend here, if anyone had studied this trend or just some of the cases individually I would appreciate if you would shed some light as to why European kings and queens kept doing this.

I was watching some youtube a few days ago (specifically that channel that has historical people rap battling against each other) for fun and saw, the aforementioned channels, video about western vs. eastern philosophers. And it got me to wondering.

When learning about history we usually learn about influential philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, Voltaire, Confuscious, Kant, Locke, Sun Tzu, Nietzsche etc. But what about the native populations of North and South America? Do the Mayans, Incas, Aztecs or Iroquois, Cherokee, Pueblos, Sioux (as general examples off the top of my head) have well known philosophers? And did they influence their culture in similar ways such as the western and eastern thinkers?

Note: I don't want a philosophy discussion. Simply, just some historians with answers to point me in a direction to do some research of my own.
