So allies won the world war-II. Hitler killed himself. Japan Surrendered. I read all that multiple times but how did Allies manage to crush the ideology of fascism in Germany? Because Hitler might be dead but fascism is an idea and how did Allies manage to replace that ideology with an ideology of accepting everyone as humans?

Were the Confederate States accepted by the rest of the world to the level of being considered soverign, or did their diplomatic standing not reach a level that high during its existance?

In old photos of WWII tanks you generally see a scheme where you have on machinegun in the hull and another in the turret alongside the main gun, whereas in modern times it seems to be that the setup is one in the turret and one or more pintle mounted (i.e. on a swivel ring) on top.

When did this transition seem to occur, and what disadvantages made designers start removing them? There doesn't seem to be any modern tanks that follow the WWII design trope of a hull-mounted machinegun.

I've heard that family life as well as the life of children have both drastically changed over the last 100 years or so, with the modern family coming to form as recent as the 1950s.

What I've read is that children used to not receive much affection from their parents and corporeal punishment was a major thing for parents to do back in the day.

No only that, but I've been told that the concept of a child by how we view it didn't exist prior to the 1950s.

I wish to know if this is true or not.

From what I understand:

• The Romans founded their republic in 510 when overthrowing the king

• The Athenians transitioned from a monarchy to democracy over thee 6th century via Solon and other politicians

• Carthage transitioned to a Republic around 480 BC because they lost a battle badly in Sicily

They are all within close proximity to each other. I am sure that the Carthaginians had contact with the Greeks and learned their ideologies because they were at war with them. But did the Romans have contact with the Greeks or Carthaginians around 510 BC? Or was it just pure coincidence that the Romans also started a Republic around the same time as Carthage and Athens.

Forgive me if I am connecting dots that aren't there, but I just found it interesting that 3 of the main examples of democracy/republic before the modern era all occurred in the same time frame.

The recent Wolfenstein game has the Nazis using dogs with bombs strapped to them to attack the player. I thought the Nazis had an admiration for dogs. So did the game developers completely make this up?

What's the distinction between, Fairy Tales, Folk Tales, Myth and Legend?

So, as I understand it, on the western front in WWI:

Warfare heavily favors the defensive, breaking through requires huge casualties for small gains.

The allies have more men, suggesting the opening of new fronts and spreading of troops would be beneficial to them.

Britain is stronger than Germany at sea.

I know there were also u-boats, so Germany would be a difficult target, but Austria-Hungary had a pretty long coastline not that far from Italy, and they managed to send men to Gallipoli, why not there? As I understand it, Gallipoli was pretty rocky and easy to defend, couldn't they have found a better place in Austria-Hungary?

What did people do before cheap padlocks? Was there just not as much stuff you'd lock up before locks were easily manufactured? Were communities small enough that you'd just get busted for stealing someones bike?

I am 34 years old, married with a 1 and half year old son. I own a home and have become fairly well established or as much as one can be in this current economy. Since I was 18 I have been in the EMS field in one form or another. Worked my way up through the ranks as an EMT, Paramedic and now I make about 80k/year as an Operations Chief with a basic IRA retirement plan and nothing much else benefit wise. This is essentially the top of any single function EMS providers career. I have an Associates degree in EMS from a local community college. I recently returned to school to pursue a Bachelor's in Public Safety and Emergency Management...AND I HATE IT! To be honest I am over the EMS field, I've done my time and the years of PTSD, long nights, no sleep and everything in between have worn me down....its time for a change.

Two things in life I have always enjoyed were history and sharing any knowledge I have with others. I wanted to be a History Teacher in High School but opted for a trade school with less hours and a quicker path to employment. Now at 34, I am wanting to accomplish this dream. I would love to have a PhD once day but doubt that will ever happen. I am not opposed to the idea but I know at this point in my life the time and money just is not there for me. I am exploring the idea of changing my major to a BA in history for secondary education with a path to get an MA in the same area. I would love to teach High School and/or at the Community College level as this is more my style then research and high level academia. Understand, I love school. I believe learning is a life long thing, something I want to instill in my son. The countless hours of reading, writing, sorting through sources and everything else excites me.

Here is the question: Can I expect to find employment in this new field at around 38 years old with both a BA and MA completed online? I know the salary is less than I make now, but trust me when I say I've reached that point where self fulfillment is more important to me. My wife also works at a very stable job and I will always have my expertise and wealth of knowledge as a Paramedic to fall back on. Will I spend years hunting for a high school job? Can I go straight into a Community College position? Or would this work be more of a labor of love for me? Thank you all for the insight and comments, I appreciate it.

Was there some functional reason for the decks of a ship to need regular cleaning?

Hi, I recently found a copy of Martin Gilbert's First World War, published in 1994, and I'm finding it very interesting.
I'd like to know if it still holds up after 25 years or if some of what he wrote is now considered wrong or faulty.
