In the wiki page of the game Europa Universalis 4, it mentioned something "By the game's start in 1444, these merchant adventures have stopped (ie Zheng He's expedition) and the Ming court has begun to adopt an isolationist look to foreign affairs." What made the Chinese change its foreign policy?

Was Niccolo Machiavelli truly "machiavellian"?

Hello reddit,

I'll get straight to the point, if we're operating under the definition that Machiavellianism is The doctrine that any means, however lawless or unscrupulous, may be justifiably employed, in order to establish and maintain order and stability within a state.

Then, Was Machiavelli truly a machiavellian? Was he a hero or a villain? Was "The Prince" simply an attempt to return to Florence or was it a true representation of his ideology? What is the general consensus on "Discourses on Livy"?

Currently discussing this with a friend and I'm curious to hear what some of you believe!

Edit: Made a new account as i'm sure many of you would view this as a useless question.

Looking for historical texts written by contemporaneous authors

I picked up a copy of The Histories a couple months back and have spent as much time as I can soaking up the details of the Mediterranean world. I'm absolutely fascinated by the descriptions that Herodotus provides, even if some of them have been proven to be apocryphal. After a bit of inspiration I also picked up a copy of A General History of Pyrates, because it was written and published at about the same time as such figures actually existed.

I've really grown to appreciate the perspective of people who were alive and variously witnessed the things they're describing, rather than reading things written by a scholar in the modern era. I recognize that the older sources are potentially less reliable, but it's fun to read.

My question is, what other books such as the two I've mentioned are out there? I'm having a surprisingly hard time finding any booklists describing texts written by historians or biographers that were written at the same time as the subject material itself. I would greatly appreciate any leads.

In the film "True Grit" (2010), which takes place in Arkansas in 1873, the characters never use contractions when speaking. Is this accurate for the time? If so, why did people not use contractions then?

This figure is true of all characters in the film, from those of relatively high station, down to outlaws and stable boys.

For added color, the Coen Brothers, who wrote the film, are known for being meticulous in their research regarding period dialogue in their scripts, so I would expect historical accuracy here, however, I obviously want to ask actual historians about this.

Early archaeology was infamously destructive and lacking when it came to recording their work. Looking at excavations throughout history, around what time do modern historians and archaeologists draw the line and say "digging before this date was worse than doing nothing" for the study of History?

For example, the site of Troy was irreversibly damaged by Schliemann's excavations. Can't we say that it was better if the site had been discovered much later, perhaps denying us of the knowledge of the location of the city, but preserving it for modern archaeology?

Going back in time, when do modern experts start cringing when they learn that a site was excavated in a certain decade?

What defines a colony?

What is the difference between an annex piece of land and a colony? When France took control of Corsica it was apart of France, when it conquered Madagascar it was a colony. When England had control of most of France it was annex territories, when it had conquered Egypt it was a colony.

I thought it was distance but France had Algeria and that was close to the French mainland. Then I thought it involves them the two parties being from different continents, but Japan had colonies in Asia and the UK had Malta which was called a colony. Then I thought it was when they try to supplaint the native population with their own. I thought that because of how the native people of the Americas and Australia/New Zealand where supplanted by Europeans. But in every other example other then the Americas and Australia didn't have the native supplanted by the colonizers.

What's more effective, Slave Labour or Paid Workers?

Is the use of Slave Labour effective? Because isn't a (well) paid worker more efficient than a Slave because the worker is less likely to be weak from undernourishment , more motivated than a slave and more capable of doing more than basic tasks. And a Worker give back to the economy by buying goods and paying taxes while the Slave can't. If so, then throughout human history why did people use slave labour over paid workers?

Did the amount of cheap slaves make it worth it? Was the benifits of paid workers not as obvious? Was the paid worker not as efficient until recently?

Thanks in Advance
