The trading of Victoria, Australia for beads and scissors

I have a vague recollection of school history telling me that Victoria in Australia (or some part of it) was "traded" with the locals for some small token of goods, and that the bargain was made because an escaped convict had joined with the locals and learned the language and could therefore act as translator. Is this still considered to be the case? Who was that convict? And just how dodgy was this bargain?

Primary sources for World War 2

Where can I find the primary sources for what happened in ww2? Like the records the Wehrmacht used to keep. Are they distributed freely or do we have to rely on secondary sources solely?

Why was the Sarissa so effective?

The 18 foot pike helped Alexander the Great conquer half the known world but what about it made it outclass almost every other weapon on the field. Was it the unfamilarity its enemies had with the weapon or was Macedonian/Greek technology just that much better than the rest of the Eastern world?

Why isn't the Ummayad Caliphate talked about like the Roman and Persian Empires?

It was as big or bigger than both of the aforementioned empires and it played a signifigant part in European history (Not to say that if something isn't European it isn't important, it's just that a lot of written history is rather euro-centric) in the muslim conquest of Iberia. What is the reason for this ommision?

What is the difference between a "Panic" and recessions? Is applying "Panics" to economic downturns purely a historiographical thing?

I only hear about the "Panic of 1837" or "Panic of 1893", but never about the "Panic of 1982" or "Panic of 2008". Does an economic panic have a meaning distinct from a recession? If so, is there a reason why there hasn't been a classic panic in over a century? Or is it a historiographical anachronism, a designation that hinges on context but is otherwise devoid of intrinsic importance? This is all from a U.S. perspective.

Are there any books out there that present an unbiased view of the founding fathers.

Specifically, something that tries to look at them less as mythological figures and more as actual people, I love history but I have to admit that I know fairly little about my own countries history when it gets down into the details and I would like to change that

How accurate is the portrayal of Chinese cultural revolution in Cixin Liu's SF Novel "The Three-Body Problem"?

Cixin Liu writes that the red-guards were against Einstein as they thought his science was "reactionary". The novel also says that many western scientists were termed reactionaries and were not taught in the universities. It also says that the there were academics who were against the big bang theory as they saw it as an attempt to place a god in the picture. How true is this? During the cultural revolution, did some people really try to measure science, and accept/reject it, in the light of Marxism?

At what point in history could you say the Roman Empire was no longer a latin empire?

As we all know, at one point in the (eastern) Roman Empire, greek had completely replaced latin language.
When did this happen? How gradual was it?

Was there any last point in history when you could definately say that the majority of the people in the administration still spoke latin?
Are there any lists of latin speaking eastern emperors, who had latin as their first language?
And when did they stop using roman numerals?

What were the common folk of feudal Japan doing?

Sorry, the question is quite obscure.

When people such as myself read of Japanese history, it's primarily regarding their military history.

What about the merchants, farmers, craftsmen and scholars? How did their practices vary from China and Europe? How did they learn their craft?

Thank you very much

What were the opinions of the Qing dynasty when the western imperial power started to “carve” up China

To further specify, throughout the history of China, China was known as 中国 which roughly translated to the Middle Kingdom. The Chinese always though that they were at the center of the world and that they were superior to all other nation. So when the western “barbarian” who were deemed inferior began defeating and taking parts of China for themselves (such as the British and the colonization of Hong Kong) what were the opinion of the Qing leaders and ruling class?

I noticed that colonized people have played a role in the armies of colonial powers in both World Wars. Did these colonized people ever become a part of the colonial navies in a similar way?

To clarify my question centers around the extent of the participation of colonized levies/people in the navies of their colonial rulers in the World Wars.

Should I get my Masters degree in History?

I didn't know a better place to ask for advice on this, so I figured I'd try here. Currently, I'm finishing up my BA in History and the plan is to go right back for my Masters in the fall. I'm 35 with no job experience due to previous health issues and I don't want to make a bad decision this late in my life. I'm torn between getting my Masters in Counseling or in History. I dropped out of school 10 years ago with a path to a BA in History and initially when I re-started last year, History was just going to be a stepping stone to Counseling. The problem is that I did my senior thesis, did well enough to get an award for it, and really had a lot of fun doing it. I also took another History class this semester, enjoyed the hell of it, and I'm going to end up with a pretty high A in the class.

I seem to be good at paper writing and I want to learn and study more things but I'm worried a Masters in History won't get me anywhere. I live in Northeast Ohio, about an hour and a half from either Pittsburgh or Cleveland, and so far I'd be willing to move closer to those two cities if I had to, for a career.

I don't know what I'm supposed to do and I can't seem to make a decision. Is getting an MA in History worth it?

I forgot to mention that I'm not too married to the idea of teaching.

How did the Germans prevent sabotage from the forced laborers in their factories during WW2?

My understanding is that the German economic exploitation of the invaded territories involved the use of forced local labor in factories producing all kinds of military hardware. How did they prevent sabotage of equipment and are there any instances where sabotage during the production process managed to have any effect on the war effort?

Why didn’t modern day Canada’s provinces join the 13 colonies in rebellion? Did the Provinces have the same status as the American colonies had? Did they simply choose not to rebel? Was Canada affected at all by the Intolerable Acts, or exempt because they were not as hostile towards the British?
