I'm writing a paper about medicine in the First World War, and was wondering if there is any good literature on how the survival rate of wounded soldiers changed from 1914 to 1918 due to improvements in medical technologies and practices. Sources would be helpful as well. Thanks!

Is it an American thing? An old thing? A reaction to the enlightenment?
Preferably written in a way that wont be offputting to some who is a biblical literalist. (My friend)

Colonial blockhouses don't seem particularly sturdy- just a two-story building with loopholes to shoot outwards. What kinds of attacks would a blockhouse be able to deter?

I was looking at some old time baseball stadium pictures and everyone was wearing super formal attire. It seems that men and women dressed formal all day every day even in the hot summer months. So I'm wondering how was the hygiene back then? Did they wear the same suit daily for a few days? Did most people have many suits so they could wear something clean 7 days a week? I'm sure most people were poor and could not afford many nice clothes. Can someone tell me how they kept clean while being poor but still dressing formal? Or were they sweaty smelly nice looking people?

Today, the most commonly used pitch standard is 440hz. I've read a bit about different tunings (432hz, 451hz, 256hz...), and some sources tend to claim that the Egyptians, ancient Greeks and even Mozart tuned their instruments to 432hz. Seeing that a lot of pitches have been used throughout history, I need to ask. Do we have scientific proof that 432hz was used as the standard tuning in the ancient world?

I know the religion was polytheistic, however Mohammad ushered in a monotheistic Abrahamic faith. Where did such beliefs come from? And how out of place is Abrahamic faith for the region?

Numerous accounts from Spanish, Portuguese and English explorers from the 1500s to 1700s report seeing large tall warrior women who ruled their society and would fight furiously. Wearing gold crowns, white makeup, long long hair, weilding bows. Taking men from rival vilages and using them to get pregnant, killing any sons or getting rid of them and only keeping daughters. Given the numerous reports, how likely is it that this is true?
I dont have any sources right now. I had been reading the book "River of darkness" by Buddy Levy that goes over the evidence in portions of the book.
So how likely is it that "Amazons" ever existed?

Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Or is it just soil moved around? And how deep is the soil? I can see from pics it is deep enough to grow grass. Were crops on it?
Edit: side note: there was a comment here, but it disappeared. Was it anecdotal? It might have been, from the line it showed in my notifs. I would not mind even anecdotal answers. Make of that what you will.

I am pretty amazed and curious at the same time how Cyprus, isolated from Greece mainland and much closer to the Islamic nations and was even controlled for a very long time by an Islamic state(s), was able to retain its Orthodoxy. How or what happened that enabled the Cyprus people to remain orthodox and retain there Greek identity?.

Hey, is there any good books dealing with the period just after the fall of the soviet union in the former Soviet States within Europe. Was interested in reading an account(s) of the rapid change of the economy, its effects, mistakes and sociological outcomes. Had a search but not too sure if enough time has past to give a well-balanced account. Ideally the period 1990 - 2000

These sources can be diary entries, personal accounts, poems, observations or any of that sort. Am I missing out on any sort of databases which may help me? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
