It seems that, throughout history, generals used the military at their command to take power. Why didn’t that happen in post-revolution America (or did it?)
It seems like the American military has been apolitical domestically, and I’m curious why? And is that an outlier, or the norm?

Basically, I don’t understand how we label historical periods. People refer to the present as post modern, and a few years ago, it was the modern period. But I read that modern means “the actual / current period” so when do we go back to being in the modern period again?
When someone in the present says “omg that house looks so modern” will we eventually have a name to label that modernity” (modernity being the current thing right now)? Do we stop referring to the present as modern until someone labels the period?
Confused

1770 working class envelopes question.
I’ve been looking around trying to figure out what would have been the working classes envelopes for there letters. Since a lot of the images shown on google look as if they are an interpretation of letters made for like weddings and such Im not taking them as my instant answer. I’ve noticed most consist of the letter simply folded and wax sealed shut, but the few others I’ve seen are actually in an envelope waxed then stamped on the front. (Which could be higher class or google shuffling another era into my results) I’m assuming that the working class if they could afford to send a letter would only fold and seal. Basically I’m looking for confirmation on weather I’m assuming correctly or not. Thank you and take care.

At school, I remember being taught that the the Song dynasty succeeded the Tang dynasty in ruling China, followed by the Yuan dynasty; however, I believe that I also read from somewhere that the Mongols considered their own dynasty to be a successor state to the Jin dynasty, rather than the Song dynasty.
Note: I am referring to the Jin dynasty that predated the Mongol conquests of China

It’s very popular now, but it seems that it would not be allowed in a Monarchy. Was it a relatively recent phenomenon or a jab taken by people?

He has always struck me as an interesting figure but the info on his life seems surprisingly limited.
There was an answer about his election a while back but it basically focused on the Papacy’s conflict with Frederick II. I am sort of curious about Richard in particular. Where did he get the money to bribe the electors? Why did he want the throne? Was his standing particularly high at the time that he was a viable candidate?

I heard this in a Mike Felton video on Youtube the other day, and although I definitely love his videos/trust his historical information- I just wanted to ask someone/some other people that are knowledgeable on this subject as well.
Apparently, Hitler got the message but chose to ignore it, for obvious reasons(literally about to launch Operation Barbarossa).
If true, it would be nothing short of fascinating historical fact... at least to me. Thanks!

I’m looking for a book with a methodical and sober analysis of the history of Korea from the Korean War till present day. There’s a lot of sensationalist texts on NK given it’s isolation and secrecy for popular audiences but I’d prefer a very rigorous though not necessarily dry text.
Also, a book about the US’s economic history, trade history/international relations e.g. industrialisation the implementation of the Bretton Woods system, post-Bretton Woods, modern profiting off neocolonialism in the global south, the slave trade and imperialism.

In doing my own independent reading, it seems like many more countries besides the ones that I grew up learning about (Italy, Germany, Spain, etc) had fascist movements. What seems to have been the major political, social, or economic differences that lead to some countries succumbing to fascism and others not?

Especially when other major rivers that run through rainforests, such as the Mekong or Yangtze, have had countless successful civilisations along their banks.

How much can we trust what holy books say about the history? Is there any decent evidence which shows any of the prophets have once been existed? With how much certainty we can say that Jesus, Moses, Muhammad, etc have existed? I don't know that much about history so I wanted to see what your opinion is about them. Thanks!

While many Greeks and Romans worshipped a large pantheon of gods, specific temples with its own cult dedicated to a chosen deity, were a well-known phenomenon. These cults arose as a sort of reverence for certain attributes of each deity. The Greeks’ admired physical strength as well as Atlas having connections to astronomy and celestial bodies. The Romans had a penchant for creating many unique cults, even worshiping real figures as deities (such as Antinous). Despite being a figure associated with the Titans and thus punished for it by the gods, are there any known examples of a Cult of Atlas, or worship of any other “punished” figures of Greek and Roman mythology?

If August was added to the calendar for Augustus Caesar and July was added for Julius Caesar, why is July pronounced so differ from Julius? Is that only true for English? If so, why? Or why is it so different?

I'm looking for some good books about Chinese history in the early modern period. I'm mainly interested in learning more about the history of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the boxer rebellion and about the Republic of China, but also China's role as a geopolitical entity.

After WW2 the fight for global supremacy was between the United States and the Soviet Union with the United Kingdom taking a step back. Why did they do that? Why didn't they just rebuild both their nation and their military and continue their role as the western superpower?

As far as I understand it the Japanese people were fed an entirely propagandized view of the war (like everyone) and they were deeply entrenched in nationalism. They believed they could never lose and they were superior. I'm curious as to if a specific event or a series of events significantly effected public confidence. I'm especially curious if anything like this happened before Okinawa and the massive bombing campaign against the mainland.

Hi, I'm not an archaeologist but have lately been reading a lot about parietal art. I have also started a book on the excavating process, in which many methods of dating etc. were described, but there was no order in which events should follow one another. Moreover, there was little to no mention of how to excavate in caves and, clearly, I still have not learned much of how these beautiful stories of art and the start of human creativity have come about. I should like to understand the reasoning of an archaeologist in coming to such a conclusion. Are there any books or field manuals or general guides to the excavating of caves and rockshelters? Any other must-read books in the subject are also wlecome.
