Where did Roman legionaries keep their money when away from home for years?

It seems trivial at first but as they were a professional army that may not have a true home for the duration of the service, what did they do with their pay, and any loot. Was there any proto- banking? Did they get credit from the paymaster, or did most of them just blow it weekly?

What is the idea behind a smaller, (usually) less representative upper house in bicameral democracies? Is it a hold over from the British model? Surely having a less representative house is counterintuitive to the idea of representative democracy.

Biblical Criticism and Interpretation

Hi there! I’m currently studying English Literature and History at university and I’m keen on expanding my study of biblical criticism - how the interpretation of the bible has evolved from Jewish, Catholic to Protestant perspectives. Would anyone be able to recommend me a version of the bible to purchase (with accompanying commentary from the above perspectives) that would augment my study, such that I’m reading perspectives from different religions/denominations? Thanks very much!

Are acts like the explusion of the Jews from Rome under Tiberius, or the destruction of the Temple, viewed as examples of antisemitism or just the Romans being Romans?

There are well documented inhumane science experiments that were performed on human prisoners during World War 2. Did any of them actually result in new or beneficial medical or scientific discoveries?

During WW2 Nazi experimentation on humans took place, and there were similar practices taking place in Japan as well. Did any of these horrific and inhumane research methods actually result in any new findings with regards to human anatomy, medicine, etc.?

Starting in 1850, Armenians living under the Ottoman Empire started agitating for a homeland of their own. The Ottomans DID offer them an autonomy but not freedom, a proposal Armenians REJECTED. But how come those same Armenians never rebelled when Russia ended up giving them EXACTLY THE SAME THING?

[Third and final attempt at getting replies...]

The title is asking a question I cannot easily reconcile myself to. (Forgive me for being a little lazy and not providing sources - they are out there but I just don't have the time).

After 1850 the Armenians living under Ottoman rule started rebelling against their Turkish Muslim overlords (with Russia, France, and Britain's help), agitating to create a Christian independent homeland in areas that were last ruled by them some 1500 years previously.

The Ottomans did not offer an independent state to the Armenians, instead a promise to turn a vilayet (province) over to them to run as they saw fit, as well as some areas that had a muslim majority that would be added to this vilayet (okay, don't quote me on this, it was a few provinces offered to them or one megaprovince or something of the sort).

This plan was rejected by the Armenian parties as it fell short of their demand for an independent Armenian homeland with hard borders. Instead these Armenians allied themselves with Russia, hoping to precipitate the collapse of the Ottoman Empire by attacking it from the eastern front and freeing Armenian land as they advanced.

Now here is where it gets confusing (for me...)

Fast forward to 1920 and the same Armenians have now accepted living within a Soviet republic with limited autonomy (even less than in the Turkish plan) whose rulers are not even Christians but Communist atheists...

Wait... what ?!?

Where did all those patriotic Armenian Christian rebels fighting for an independent Christian Armenia go?

How come there was similarly no armed rebellion against the installation of a SSR in Armenia as there was against the Ottoman Empire during its final days ???

Does history as it panned out seem to suggest that Armenians were easily manipulated by Russian/Western powers into fighting the Ottomans under the pretext of Christianity for the Western powers/Russians' own gain?

Please discuss

How did the Germans plan on concealing/explaining the number of murdered Jews after the war ended?

They obviously tried to hide traces of the atrocities commited but was there an actual plan when they decided on the Final Solution as to what they would present to the world? There would have been questions like "where are all those Jews?". They phisically removed even their remains, so how would they have explained that?
