How were feminist movements in countries with male-only compulsory military service (e.g. Finland, Singapore) affected by such policies, if at all? What did they think about such policies, which some men claim favours women since they had the priviledge to not serve?

If you look at old talking movies, everyone act with strange accents and overly dramatic emphasis. When did acting become more “realistic” in today’s standards?

How did the allies have access to post war Berlin if it was so deep in USSR territory?

https://goo.gl/images/GvygTP seeing this image I don’t understand how the allies had access to the areas held in Berlin especially during the period of the iron curtain?

Follow up question is why exactly Berlin was carved up like this? Why did they all need an equal part of the city?

Studying the culture and day-to-day life in Joseon Korea, what resources would you recommend?

I was looking at books related to Korean history about that time period and the 2 that caught my eye was "A Concise History of Korea: From Antiquity to the Present" and "Korean History in Maps: From Prehistory to the Twenty-First Century".

Are there any other books, documentary, video series or podcast that relates to Korean history from the Joseon dynasty?

In terms of pop culture, there are a lot of Korean dramas that are set in that time period, but I find it personally difficult as a student to always know what is historically accurate and what is just for the sake of the plot.

When and how did the western dining convention of individual servings and meals arise?

To my understanding, non-western societies typically eat from communal dishes, whereas westerners are accustomed to having individual servings, particularly when dining out. How did this convention develop? Thanks!

Can someone explain to me in simple terms why the Soviet Union collapsed? I feel I'm quite dense.

Right so there's three main points we get taught in High School in America about the subject.

  1. Socialism just doesn't work (Which in my research means that their planned economy failed)
  2. The American government outspent the Soviets??? (I have been told that this is us just taking credit for the work of the people living under the Iron Curtain)
  3. The people decided to secede, and the USSR suffered economic collapse, which is confusing for multiple reasons. Firstly, what kind of economic collapse outright destroys a nation?

Anyway, I guess to be more nuanced if I'm not too much already, is the Russian Federation a continuation of the Union? If not, who exactly decided to just make the nation a democracy with a capitalist system?

If the atomic bomb on Hiroshima or Nagasaki had failed to detonate, wouldn't the Japanese have gotten their hands on it?

In this Youtube video at 1:55 one of the crewmen of the airplane says he was sure the bomb was going to be a dud. But if the bomb had failed, then it would have hit the ground. The drop would probably damage it, but I suppose the Japanese would be able to puzzle it together. Wouldn't that have put nuclear technology in their hands? Couldn't they then build their own copy? Was that ever a concern for the Americans?

Code Talkers of WWII

New to this subreddit, is there any information on code talkers and missions they performed or contributed to during the 6 month period of storming Normandy to Battle of the bulge? Specifically the European theatre and not the pacific theatre. I’m looking for actual missions, names, dates and divisions.

I currently have in my possession almost every code talker book still in print but they don’t go into detail in regards to missions and divisions they were placed in especially the dates I’ve requested for.

How did pre-modern Scandinavians maintain their sanity throughout the long winters?

When the weather isn't conducive to going outside we in the modern world are very lucky that we have computers, TVs, videogames and books to keep us entertained. But I started to wonder: how did people in the pre-modern era stay entertained? Particularly people living in a region where the winters are particularly harsh and where daylight can be extremely limited. How, for example, would a Medieval Scandinavian - especially one not able to read or write - keep him or herself entertained with none of the benefits of modern technology, nor even the ability to read a book?

Basically, once we Americans began to come to what is now the US, how long did it take is to evolve to our current dialect?
