Dental Hygiene in ancient times?

So the toothbrush has been around for almost 100 years. But before this what did people use for dental hygiene? Did they simply let their teeth rot and fall out? Can someone please explain.

Did loose lips really sink ships?

We’ve all seen the propaganda posters from WWII about keeping quiet on military operations. But was this a real fear? Was there any instance where Axis powers found out about something critical by listening in to the common man on the street?

[Probably Removed by Mod] subreddit potential lost by *new* *popular* threads

Mods here have always been thorough. It's really refreshing to get accurate facts AND opinions.

The problem is that it's practically a non sequeter when subbing and browsing Reddit as a whole. Due mostly to the dedicated professionals of this sub taking proper diligence answering questions asked.

I want to propose a solution. Professionals posts and comments are top bill. Theories and opinions AREN'T deleted but tagged as such. Idiot comments not contributing should be deleted..

This comes out of love. 9/10 I view an AskHistorian post I don't get an answer. Can we do something to encourage other knowledgable historians into this sub.

I’ve read that 20,000 people were sacrificed annually by the Aztecs, how accurate is this and do we know the logistics behind making this possible? How were the victims selected, as well as treated, before sacrifice?

Why are other European territories in South America not contested like the Falkland Islands are?

I find it quite odd how there is so much controversy over the ownership of the Falkland Islands, there was a war over it after all and it remains one of the most important political issues in Argentina to this day, yet other similar territories in South America don't seem to be contested at all.

For example, Dutch islands like Aruba and Curacao are located much closer to the coast of Venezeula than the Falkland Islands are to the coast of Argentina, yet as far as I'm aware the Venezeulan government doesn't contest the sovereignty of those islands at all. They are simply accepted to be Dutch and it is not an issue.

Likewise as far as I'm aware no country contests the existance of French Guyana, despite the fact that this is literally a chunk of France situated right on the mainland of South America.

Can someone explain why the Falkland Islands gets so much scrutiny and generates so much controversy, while other European territories in South America are just accepted and appear to cause no controversy at all? I have to say it seems like double standards to me.

What’s the history behind the reluctance to modify the constitution in the USA?

Edit: I should add that the reason I find this interesting is that other countries don’t seem to share this reluctance, and I am curious as to why that is so.

Bob haircuts on women in 1920s America

/u/mimicofmodes mentioned a newspaper article relating that a woman was punched by her husband in 1928 because she bobbed her hair. What was the social implication of cutting one's hair short in this era? I recall reading "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" by F. Scott Fitzgerald several years ago and being struck by how important it was in the story (set in 1920 in the Midwest) that she cut or not cut her hair.

Would this be similar in impact to shaving the side of one's head nowadays, ie a strong social statement in addition to an aesthetic choice? How would young women more generally express themselves through hairstyles in the "Jazz Age"? I know hairstyles changed quite a bit during this time so I'm sure there are some interesting themes.

What was the primary purpose of airborne on D-Day?

A related (maybe equivalent) question is, why is landing alone -- barring perhaps smaller scale airborne operations -- insufficient for the operation? I understand the strategic motivations behind some individual operations (such as capturing Pegasus Bridge to prevent German armor from attacking the beach) but fail to see that of the rest.

When did performing in black face become unacceptable and even racist?

I am watching the movie Holiday Inn. Everyone knows the infamous "Abraham" number that's performed in black face. This movie was produced in 1942, the start of WWII. I'm pretty shocked that in 1942 black face performance was still acceptable.

What exactly was the role of the second in a duel? Apart from moral support, what duties would he perform?

If necessary to narrow this, I'm thinking about duels in the UK and Europe from, say, the 17th through the early 19th centuries (when they could have been fought with either swords or guns).

I recently read that the Empress Irene's ascension to the Byzantine throne impacted Pope Leo III's decision to declare Charlemagne emperor. Is this true, and if so how do we know?

I have heard several other motivations for the coronation put forward, but this was a new one.
