Nowadays, a navy will order a number of ships of a specific class from the shipyard, and they’ll all be made the same. Like the type 23 destroyer, or the Arleigh Burke Class. All the ships of the class are made almost exactly the same. This was probably not how it always was. When did naval ships begin having models or classes, where several of almost the exact same would be built by a nation? And what did naval shipbuilding look like before that?

This is a podcast (if you’re unaware), that revisits events in late history and explains the true story about what happened and how, by looking at the things unseen first go-around.
There is an episode called The Prime Minister and The Prof - The friendship that changed the course of World War II. Gladwell brings into light Winston Churchills long time friend Frederick Alexander Lindemann.
At one point Gladwell explains how Lindemann persuaded Churchill to store up food for the (I think), British army; it ended up being more food than needed. The extra food, before arriving to Britain had to pass by India, some (I think) 50 miles off shore. India was in a famine at this time. Gladwell says that 3 million Indians died. Had it not been for Lindemann, his pride and Churchill’s decision to trust him, lives would have been saved.
I’m wondering how accurate Gladwell is.

I would like to buy these bullets for a friend but I cannot identify the exact origin of them. I would like to add an identification card in his gift because he's a big history buff. I don't wanna look stupid but I thought it'd be a great idea. http://imgur.com/gallery/kxeLJxL

Hello. I'm from Taiwan so I know it's weird to ask this question in American forum.
Since there is few people studying HPS in Taiwan, I cannot discuss something like this with others.
I've bachelor degrees on physics and chemical engineering from National Taiwan University(NTU).
Now, I'm studying Electronics engineering graduate program at NTU.
Recently, it seems that I've a chance to study PhD HPS program at France.
My interest is history of physics, but I'm afraid I cannot find a job after graduation.
Is there anyone who also study HPS PhD program? Would you please share with me how you tackle with this problem?
Thanks in advance...and sorry for my bad English :(

Just something that has been on my mind for awhile. I've never really examined it myself, but it appears to me as a layman looking in that Poles and Russians were treated / viewed the worst while Czechs and Slovaks and other Slavic peoples were largely ignored.

There wouldn't have been tomatoes, common beans, peanuts, papayas, maize, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and of course chili peppers. More too.
What from that time is still around and commonly eaten?
edit. All of the foods I mentioned are native to the Americas and were introduced to India after Christopher Columbus reached the Americas in 1492.

There seems to be a wide variety of spellings of Irish surnames in the United States, such as Monahan/Moynihan/Monaghan, and O’Neill-O’Neal. This seems surprising to me given that Ireland was hardly a pre-literate society when the Irish immigrants were coming to America.
Why is this, and does this variety also exist in Ireland? Are they truly different surnames that happen to have similar spellings? Are they the product of Ellis Island mishearings? Do they reflect different regional accents or speech patterns?

I keep seeing a lot of jokes referring to Italian military incompetence during WW1, specially that of Luigi Cadorna. I've seen tellings of a lot of the cruelty and incompetence of officers as well.
How historically accurate is this? Is this just popular myth?

There are hundreds of videos like this on youtube which talk about Alexander's exploits, but these don't sound like actual history, many such videos go into great depth on his life, how do we know that these aren't just stories which are retold again and again but actual history? How much of Alexander's story can be reconstructed by primary accounts which aren't Greek? Also, at what points do Historians decide that history ends and myths began?

A few addtional tie in questions:
If these claims are true how often did such things happen?
Why did Hitler do these things? Obviously he believed his own decisions were the correct ones but whats spurred this belief that he knew better?
Did Hitlers overruling of generals contribute to the attempt on Hitlers life that resulted in Ewin Romels coerced suicide?
Lastly what were some of the major decitions Hitler overuled his generals on amd what was the result of Hitlers decisions?
Sorry for so many additional questions, thank you for your time have a nice day!

Constantine took over while Diocletian was still alive. Are there any records of any cooperation between the two or some sort of 'beef'?

I've been told my whole life that popes have long been destroying parts of the Bible that they didn't consider "right" and thus leaving us with a lot of left out parts of the Bible.

Hi everyone,
While writing my thesis on the petition-and-response-model of Fergus Millar in accordance with emperor Tiberius, I find it very difficult to come across primary sources that cite edicts or laws that emperor Tiberius carried out. Are there epigraphic overviews or lists which cite which emperor proclaimed what? I do have acces to most historical journals through my university, but I don't know where to start. Thanks in advance!

I know there were at least a couple who were basically snipers used to take out high ranking British officers, but I don't know much else outside of that.
