I feel like a lot of times documentaries aren’t always accurate scientifically or historically (extreme example being discovery channel ‘documentary’ on mermaids). What’s a good way of checking whether a documentary is actually historically accurate and not wildly lying to me?

This is such an odd question I know but you know how today there's alot of rap and hip hop songs that older people usually consider part of teen culture? Was there anything like that in say, the 1910's?
EDIT: the answer to this turned out alot more interesting than I thought it would be. Thank you!

It came to me as I read a financial book that had Babylon as the key word in it’s title even though it didn’t talk about anything concerning that civilization or anything that was remotely close to that period of time , after a quick research you can find many books , movies, and songs that have mentioned Babylon not from a historical point of view but rather a different reason whatever it may be , are there more records concerning Babylon than the other civilizations that co-existed with it so it’s more well known? If so I would love some early mention of it in a historical point of view.

Does anything that goes past immediately become History? I'm pretty sure we'd consider the early 20th century to be history, I'm not sure about 9/11, what about other events happening right now? Do they become History as soon as the event ends?

I am currently writing an analysis of MLK's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" for school. I am assuming that the subject of race was debated during that time period. But I can't find any examples of real world examples of arguments used by racist whites at that time to attempt to justify their views. Were they typically religious justifications? Were there any famous racist intellectuals/cultural leaders at the time?

I watched a video, where the guy said that over 60% of women in the US didn't want suffrage. Is that true?

From my understanding, we are a Constitutional Republic, but we seem to keep floating this narrative that America wanted to spread Liberal Democracy around the world. What is the form of government a "liberal democracy" subscribes to? Or was this just a narrative we used to spread influence the way Communism did post WW1?

I have noticed that moonshine was illegal until very recently, and was wondering as to why that was the case. After prohibition, wouldn’t it become legal like any other liquor, and was it legal until prohibition? Why didn’t the federal government decide to not to change this until under Obama’s Administration?

From what I understand, there was a lot of Soviet propaganda promoting that the mass starvation was a "necessary evil" to collectivized farming.. But there's a lot of evidence that the NKVD actually confiscated food supplies especially form Ukrainians and other minorities in the Soviet Union.. There's also pictures of "red trains" or wagons with peasants forcibly hauling their food produce to government depots... The bulk of the 10 million deaths from the famine also happened in Ukraine.. Other places in the Soviet Union, but mostly Ukraine.
What do you guys think? I see people saying that the Holodomor is "capitalist propaganda" but I also see people saying that the denialism of it happening is just to cover the ass of the Soviets who caused it.
Thanks again and I tried posting an article about it on another history subreddit but think I was shadow banned.. Or maybe just waiting mod approval - either way, I can't comment on the post I made and can only see it on my profile.

The title pretty much says it all. I saw someone on r/judaism claiming that anti-Semitism is a largely Christian phenomenon, but it was (naturally) not a claim that came with citations. I know that plenty of Muslims and secular Westerners indulge in anti-Semitic rhetoric and action, but when it comes to the history of anti-Semitism as a phenomenon and ideology, I mostly know about European Christian anti-Semitism (forcing Jews into usury as a career, maligning usury, projecting the abstract machinations of financial instruments onto the concrete entities who are Jews, using Jews as a scapegoat for sectarian strife). But that strain of anti-Semitism didn't just spontaneously appear in medieval Europe, right? It had to come from somewhere. And I'm wondering if there were parallel phenomena happening in other regions where I know less history. (Does rising regional anti-Semitism correspond to areas that suddenly have an influx of Jewish migrants? Does it correspond to certain political or religious phenomena?)
I'll pay it forward and link a semi-related paper (more like modern history) on anti-Semitism for those who don't know much about it. https://libcom.org/library/anti-semitism-national-socialism-moishe-postone

Or Greek ones in Damascus or Cairo? Was there much interaction between scholars or religious figures and other non-state actors?
I also realize this question stretches several centuries dealing with various Arab and Turkish states. If I had to ask for a specific era, it would be the era before the Crusades that I'd be interested in and after the Abbasid Golden Age. But any insight into any other era would be awesome nonetheless.

I don't know if I should ask this to a Historian or to a Computer savvy people, however, I think a military Historian may be more familiar with historical Signal Intelligence than normal people. Please excuse my curiosity.
After reading about Allies and Axis signal intelligence work in World War 2, I am intrigued whether or not any of the signal analysts at that time could break through our modern encryption method. Since as far as my understanding, any encrypted message at that time was transmitted as an analog signal, I am also wondering whether or not the analysts could interpret a digital signal. I had tried to read and search for the answer myself, but alas, I found none.
So, to frame my question, assume that during the 1930's or 1940's a continuous AES-encrypted digital signal from the future leaked through the past. Could the contemporary signal analysts at that time decrypt the data using contemporary technology or science?
If this question is not appropriate for this subreddit, may I ask for a help to point which subreddit will be the better?
Thank you for spending the time to accompany my curiosity. Cheers.

Here is the description from the publisher: "Many observers stereotype Islam and its scripture as inherently extreme or violent-a narrative that has overshadowed the truth of its roots. In this masterfully told account, preeminent Middle East expert Juan Cole takes us back to Islam’s-and the Prophet Muhammad’s-origin story. Cole shows how Muhammad came of age as the eastern Roman Empire and the Sasanian Empire of Iran fought savagely throughout the Near East and Asia Minor. Muhammad’s profound distress at the carnage of his times led him to envision an alternative movement, one firmly grounded in peace. The religion Muhammad founded, Islam, spread widely during his lifetime, relying on soft power instead of military might, and sought armistices even when militarily attacked. Cole sheds light on this forgotten history, reminding us that in the Qur’an, the legacy of that spiritual message endures.

So I’m just getting out of my US History 2 class where we talked about Rudolf Hess and WW2. My professor brought up some views that Rudolf Hess changed from his flight in 1940 when he crashed in the UK saying “there’s 4 possibilities all of which point to a body double” saying how Hess was either a Soviet spy, a British double, Hess’s actual body double, or a brain washed individual who looked like Hess and sympathized with the Nazi party. My professor used facts such as the planes tail numbers form when it took off in Germany were different then the one found in Scotland, he also said that Hess was shot in the lung in WW1 and sometime in the 60’s a doctor found no trace of any scar or wound.
I feel like my professor is telling us a conspiracy theory, as he did not provide us any facts, articles, evidences to prove his theory. He just talked about this subject for 30 minutes. Also heavily talked about the “Hess files” within the British archive.
My question is does my professors saying have any true basis in reality, is what he told the class even possibly true and if it is could someone help provide me with evidence to either support or deny his claims. Thank you sorry for the weird post, on mobile.
