Historically in Christian discourses have there been formal distinctions between what a 'pagan' was and what a 'heathen' was?

If so how have the meanings of those terms shifted over time?

Just for some context as to why I'm asking. I'm from the Philippines and, in the part of the country I'm from, the main Christian denomination is Episcopalian from the American colonization, and obviously the majority of the country is Catholic and that also has a big influence. A common way that indigenous beliefs are referred to is as pagan beliefs/practices and I was wondering the history and technicalities of the ways those terms were used.

Did the roman legionaries wear red?

Did the roman legionaries wear red like Hollywood shows us? As I understand it the roman soldiers had to pay for their own armor and weapons when joining the army and red was an expensive color back then. So did even the plebs that joined the army wear red or is this just something that pop-culture has made up? Similar to the myth that vikings wore horns.

Book Recommendations For Students?

Hello, I'm a second year student and I'm looking for a good read for the last bit of summer. There are so many books out there but I'm after something that's well written and enjoyable. I took a historiography class last fall and the teacher spoke about popular history books that resonated with a broader audience. We read The Return Of Martian Guerre as an example and I loved it, it felt like a novel or a narrative. I'm looking for something like that. Our professor discussed some of the problems and criticisms of the authors research, and that made the read Imo even more immersive. I read mostly political science stuff and am interested in labor history and more broadly 20th century European history, especially the Russian revolution and the Spanish Civil War. This might sound stupid but, of course I've read "stuff" but certain things really stick out, while other stuff is a bit more dry. Some examples Orwells Hommage to Catalonia was amazing, i really enjoyed Reza Alan's Zealot, and am currently reading Stephen Kotkins Biography of Stalin which is very comprehensive and well written. Im hoping for recommendations related to some of the topics I've mentioned but I'm open to anything primary or secondary (but obviously the emphasis is on secondary), book or article, and lastly any book on a any topic that is an amazing read and deserves recognition. Thanks.

I apologize in advance if this is against the rules.

Public Interest in Trials During the 20s/30s

I was watching the movie Chicago a couple days ago, and in the movie a lawyer gets the protagonist out of a murder charge by doing press conferences with her and lying to the press to generate sympathy.

Back then, was the public so interested in criminals that the press actually spoke to them in this manner?

When did 'Black [people]' first begin to be used as a term to describe people of traditionally African descent?

I have noticed that it is not just in the United States, but they are referred to as this in other countries as well (I'm from the UK)

Also, it doesn't seem like it would be a logical conclusion to refer to Africans as black and Western Europeans as white, as they're more brown/peach coloured respectively

If someone would be able to help shed some light on this it would be much appreciated, thank you :)

When and why did the term 'near-east' fall out of favor? Why was there an earlier distinction between 'near-east' and 'middle-east'?

So as I understand it, there used to be three distinct terms to refer to parts of Asia (apart from the Russian part): Near-east, Middle-east and Far-east.

Middle-east refered to what is now Iran, Pakistan and India. Far-east to anything east of that. And Near-east to The Levant, Mesopotamia and Turkey.

Nowadays though, I see the term 'Near-east' rarely used. And 'Middle-east' seems to cover both the areas of the old 'Near-east' and 'Middle-east'?

When and why did this happen?

In the early 19th century, the phrase 'ebony trade' was used by European slave traders as a euphenism to disguise their trade. Does this indicate an anti-slavery sentiment in Europe, and does it have any connection to the American Civil War?

Why was the Donner Party trapped? Couldn't they just go around the mountains or in between? Couldn't they catch fish or shoot bears? Why couldn't they make fires?

I know this is a dumb question but I'm genuinely interested. I've seen pictures of the pass and it doesn't look too difficult to pass if you have a navigator and you're experienced

EDIT: nobody can give me a clear answer, comments keep getting deleted :/.

If you're educated on this topic in the slightest please tell me I'm really interested in this whole situation as I'm visiting Lake Tahoe and I heard about what happened to them. Really want some answers pls.

Edit 2: why am I being downvoted? I'm just trying to get educated on the California Trail and Donner Party :(

Did an inventor of Mr. Coffee build a suburban nuclear reactor?

My old typography teacher--who sometimes has no idea what he's talking about--told a wacky story about the inventor of Mr. Coffee building a suburban neighborhood with a nuclear reactor buried underneath in order to gift the neighborhood with free electricity unconnected to the main power grid, got away with it for years, until an inspector noticed something fishy was going on and the reactor was carefully decommissioned. I assumed this was true for years but now can't find anything about it in Google searches. Wikipedia says Mr. Coffee was invented by two guys, not one, and neither of their articles say anthing about a suburban development with a nuclear reactor, which one would think would be highly notable. I'm starting to wonder if one of my teacher's friends made a joke based on Mr. Fusion from Back to the Future and then my teacher misunderstood. Is there any truth to this story?

American Civil War: question about the movie Gettysburg.

While speaking with the British observer, Longstreet says something along the lines of “we should have freed the slaves first, then fired on Fort Sumter.”

Was this view seriously discussed in the south? I thought slavery was one of the primary rights the south was fighting to preserve. Were the confederates planning on freeing the slaves after they attained their independence?

Was this just to demonstrate Longstreet was an abolitionist himself?

Spartan citizenship extended only to the rich - rich enough to hold slaves and be a leisure class. Was there upward mobility to join this class?

So, the picture I've gathered of Sparta over time in this forum is that actual citizens were essentially a leisure class, rich enough to hold slaves and estates and not really have to do any practical work. What sort of upward mobility was there in this society? For example, in Rome an Equestrian could potentially become a Senator over time. Could a non citizen of Sparta gain enough wealth to become a true citizen? How difficult was this process?

Aside from the fact that "In God We Trust" appears on the money, can America historically be considered a religious Christian nation?

A little context: I'm reading the book "The Paradigm" by Jonathan Cahn, which attempts to use Old Testament Isreal's turning away from God to the worship of Baal as a doom-and-gloom warning for events in modern America, based on what I feel is a very flawed knitting together of coincidences between ancient Israeli political and religious figures and modern American ones. I can see where the logic is problematic, but I don't know enough about the relationship between politics and religion in America historically to determine if the fundamental premise of the book is outright wrong. (that premise: Both nations were founded on the "Word of God" and experienced problems when turning away from God.) While I know that Christian values have certainly influenced American politics, can anyone reasonably go so far as to say that Christianity formed the very foundation of the country?
