How old are reflexive interjections like "ouch" and "oops" in English? Might a medieval monk exclaim "a-ha!" upon thinking of the perfect turn of phrase for his translation of Boethius?

If these don't go much further back than the modern era, what did English speakers use before our time?

Any historian podcast out there?

I apologise if my post is not acceptable, as it's not really about history. But as a lover of history, and a history student at university with aspirations to become an academic historian, I was wondering if there are any podcasts by historians out there that I could listen to.

Is it fair to say that before let’s say 1850 there was no such thing as “garbage”? I’m assuming everything was biodegradable somehow since plastics, styrofoam, etc... were not around. When did “garbage” and land fills begin to come into effect?

Waffen SS foreign volunteers

how many nations contributed to the SS forces during WW2? Did they only serve on the Eastern Front? After the war, how were veterans treated? Were they jailed or executed? Were many forcibly conscripted or were there ideological reasons that pushed them to serve?

I wish we knew more about them. It seems mostly a dirty secret for many Euro nations to overlook this.

I recently read that asexuality was considered a mental disorder until recently. I'm also aware that homosexuality was classified as a mental disorder until the 20th century. How did sexual orientations beyond "attraction to someone of the opposite sex" become classified as a mental illness?

Was Luigi Cadorna really so stupid as the head Italian general of WWI? Or were there good reasons for his launching of 12 Isonzo battles?

I've heard a lot of misconceptions about World War I from BadHistory, some of which I've seen on The Great War channel. Something that's been bugging me is how stupid Cadorna seems as the head Italian general. Is this something where hindsight is 20/20 or was he really just that terrible?

How common was wearing masks in renaissance Venice?

I always assumed that masks were only worn for parties, but apparently that wasn't the case and there were whole 'seasons' when wearing them was quite common. Is that true? Would people just go about their normal lives wearing masks or was it still a bit of 'dressing up'? Did everyone wear them or was it only a few people? Were there laws about it? Did people have distinctive masks which identified them, or were they more anonymous? How long did this go on for?

Army replacement service during World War 2

So I was watching Band of Brothers again and in episode 8 (not sure) they condemned someone from easy company to sit through the replacement battalion (correct term?) instead of going awol and rejoining the company. Was this a general sentiment?

Also, I heard that the replacement battalion was not very comfortable? What did you go through after you were discharged from the hospital until you rejoined your former unit or another unit?

Suggestion: Add a comment thread for non-historian discussion

Tired of seeing an interesting question being posted that gets highly upvoted and every single response has been removed with the question never getting an answer. We could add something like what /r/WritingPrompts has where there is a single comment thread automatically made in a post devoted to comments that are on the topic at hand but does not meet the criteria for the fraction of responses that don't get deleted.

What did Choctaw Chief George W Harkin mean by stating "[Americans] readily sympathize with the distressed of every country"?

I was reading some Native writings and stumbled upon this in his letter to the american people. Is this suppossed to be sarcastic? Was this about how America treated the immigrants better than the native populations?

Book recommendation?

This is a two parter. My new girlfriend has a master's degree in history. Her focus is WWII (both the European and Pacific conflicts). Topic for discussion/question for you good folks:

  1. Are there any must read history books that have been published in the last year? I'd love to surprise her with something she might not have read yet. She's been out of academia for a while and isn't up on the most current books.
  2. I sincerely want to get excited about history. I am entertained by documentaries about WWII. What should I be reading?

Suggestions for books about the Huns or Non-Roman Ancient East European cultures (like the Avars)?

Hey historians,

I have been on an East Europe history and literature kick and recently started reading a general history of the region to find interesting stories to dive deeper into. I found a very readable translation of Priscus' fragments documenting Attila and the Huns and want to learn more about pre- or non-Roman cultures occupying Europe from Germany eastward. Do you have any suggestions for books about the Huns or or other cultures in the region like the Avar? Non-fiction for non-academics would be preferable, but folktales would also be cool. Would love to get insight on Hunnic culture from within the Hunnic community ,for instance.

When did people become conscious of time zones (different times depending on longitude)?

The ancients obviously knew the Sun rose on the East, but they wouldn't have precise portable instruments to measure time so they couldn't compare the time between cities separated by hundreds of miles. Is there any historical record thar they knew that noon at one city might be sunset at another place? When did humans start to take into considerstion time zones?

Did Celts play bagpipes? Did their music resemble what we today know as "Celt music"?

Present day European regions with Celtic heritage (Scotland, Wales, Britany, Galicia) share a very distinctive folk music with a lot of bagpipe tunes and violin, which is commonly promoted as "Celt music". I wonder if this has something to do with ancient Celt folklore at all, or if this was just made up by 19th century Romantic nationalists or other groups.

How were Latinos with visible non-European ancestry treated in the American South circa 1940-1960? Would they have had to ride at the back of the bus?

I am assuming, for example, that well-to-do, Spanish-looking Cubans like Desi Arnaz would have been considered white for all intents and purposes.

What about mestizo-appearing Mexicans or Mexican-Americans? Do we have any documentation regarding how they were treated, and how they would have fit into the South's system of racial segregation, which seems to have been based on a white-black binary without much consideration for the gray area that might be represented by a Mexican of mixed Spanish and indigenous Mexican ancestry?

EDIT: Spelling fixed and post expanded for clarity.
