This question distracted my coworker and I, and Wikipedia did not provide an obvious answer.

Recently I've begun listening to a podcast by Chris Calton which is intended to be a close recounting and discussion of the Civil War. In the first episode, he talked at some length about Ludwig Mises' theory of "Activistic Determinism" generally, and specifically used it to differentiate between the cause of secession, which he unambiguously attributes to slavery, and the cause of the actual war, which he will get into in future episodes. My question is twofold: 1- What, if any, is the scope and degree of influence of Mises' theory, and 2- Is it specifically useful to differentiate between the causes of secession and the causes of the actual war?

Was doing some family research about a relative who was captured by the Japanese in WWII and the WWII Prisoners of War Data File from the military states the following:
Name: name
Event type: Military service
Event Date: 1942
Event Place: Japan
Personal information about race and place of residence in the US
Military service: USN: United States Navy
Military status: Returned to Military Control, Liberated, or Repatriated
Military Service Branch: Navy
Military Rank: Carpenter's mate, third class
Destination Place: Stalag 11B Fallingbostel Prussia (Work Camps) 53-09
If he was captured by the Japanese, how did he end up in Japan. He served on the USS Canopus (AS-9), the crew of which apparently were all captured or killed by the Japanese. Anyone know what happened/if the records are even accurate?

Also, how would a newly promoted lieutenant or commander go about getting a new uniform that conformed to Naval regulations at the time?

It can be of any time period, range from the religion's inception till 20 years ago. I didn't know where exactly to post this so I am posting my request for suggestions here. The wiki list for Ask Historians has books on the history of Islam and Christianity only for now.

Because by then the singularity will most likely have occured and aging will probably be as much of an issue like a common cold, there will be more people able to answer questions.

The disappointment of entering a thread with an interesting question and hundreds of replies only to find a barren desert within is so unique to this sub that I hope we will one day have a German word to describe it.
Until that day, however, perhaps it would be possible to have a flair or tag of some sort that can be set to a thread once it has received at least one answer that meets AskHistorians standards, that way readers could tell from a glance if it's worth their time to click?

Other than University or school (I'm not in Uni yet), where can I learn accurate, detailed and accessible medieval European history as a whole ad learn about the various empires, kingdoms, etc from the fall of Rome to the end of the Middle Ages? For example, to define my understanding of the Holy Roman Empire versus other medieval empires, etc.
I prefer any online sources (videos, texts) and/or books (textbooks are fine) from which I can learn all this. Thank you so much!

I've heard that how unfamiliar most of civilian society is today with the military leads to a lot of disconnect, alienation, and misunderstandings that make it harder to return from clmbat duty (which increases ptsd, depression, and other emotional difficulties). Was this different when such a huge percentage of the country was involved in the war effort (as military, family members of military, or just through civilian war efforts and rationing)?

Which echelon did the Espirit de corps exist at (Did the soldiers feel pride within their respective legion, cohort, centuries, etc)?
Did the auxiliaries have any although they were considered non citizens?
Examples of espirit de corps if some can be provided like symbols, mottos, soldiers making fun of another unit.

Can I ever return home? Does my family receive wages? Would I have been targeted to be impressed in the first place? Would impressment actually improve my life (barring death or dismemberment).
Bonus round, could I be impressed by pirates or would I have simply been kidnapped/murdered/ransomed?

This holiday is pretty popular in my country, even though many people connect it with communism. I remember reading that this originated from an event that happened in the US.
What were the reasons for US having it on a different day?
And how widespread are the May 1st celebrations in the rest of the world?

They've essentially run the world since the 15th century, and I'm wondering why that was. My guess is technological supremacy, and a more unified culture through Western values established by classical Greek philosophies.
