Why were the two disconnected territories of Crete and Cyrenaica combined into a single Roman province?

From 67 BC until 297 AD the Aegean island of Crete and the NE Libyan territory of Cyrenaica were combined as a single province with its capital on Crete. What was the reason for this?

Wikipedia only gives the date the provinces were combined and the source is only an Encyclopaedia Britannica entry with no explanation either.

primary sources on siberian shamanism?

Often one will find the claim, that siberian or saami shamans would feed fly agaric mushrooms to reindeer, and then drink the urine of said reindeer. Supposedly the reindeer filters out the poisonous substances, leaves the psychoactive ones in the urine, safe for consumption.

Being saami myself, and never having heard of this practice, I started digging around. There are no sources for this practice amongst the saami people.

So I started digging around for sources on the claim that siberian shamans did this, and I’ve yet to find a primary source that have witnessed this practice.

Can any of you guys help?

Why was Christianity so successful at replacing the pagan religions?

My best guess is that ideologically, Jesus is an attractive person to worship. The pagan gods were not your friends and wreaked havoc on the world while Jesus was love and wanted to save you.

How do historians account for the spread of Islam? I’ve often heard it said that Islam spread ‘by the sword’, but also that when a city was conquered there was very little pressure put on citizens to convert as they could profit from the jizya/jizyah tax on unbelievers.

Sorry if this has been asked before. But before Hitler became one of the worst humans in history, who did people claim was the worst at that time? Atilla the Hun? Who was the worst bad guy prior to Hitler?

I found an old, slightly queer looking advertisement at my work.

Could someone tell me if it's old/what's the deal with it? Looks like a cigarette ad, but I can't decipher anything else about it.

Context: I work at a low barrier homeless shelter, where interesting stuff that gets thrown away and then found by binners gets brought and then forgotten, so the purest miscellany regularly materializes without any explanation. This has been on the bathroom wall for a while and I've been wondering what the heck is up with it for the better part of a year.

Was the German government post WWI but pre Hitler planning for a war?

I know the treaty of Versailles had various stipulations against rearming, specifically against the formation of an airforce, but I've recently heard about clandestine government efforts to recruit future pilots through local glider programs, and while I know Hitler mobilized the entire nation for its war effort, but thinking about how quickly it was done, I couldn't help but wonder if the previous government had been attempting to rebuild already.

The Byzantine princess Anna Komnene was highly educated in multiple fields but she had to read certain literature like the Odyssey in secret because their pagan themes were frowned upon. What do we know about the reception of Classical works of art and literature with pagan themes in the ERE?

The tidbit about Anna Komnene interested me. I just assumed that Classical Greek literature would be well loved in the Hellenized Eastern Roman Empire but it's probably more complex.

Did the Islamic Caliphates spread in a more brutal and aggressive manner than other empires?

One claim I often hear is that the Muslim Empires, namely the Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbassid and Ottoman Caliphates, spread in a very brutal, aggressive, and a more intolerant manner in comparison to their European or Asian counterparts. And is often used as a foundation upon which to argue about Islam has "Always been at war with the world." Whilst this claim IS NOT something that the majority of people believe, I have heard this emanate from a significant minority of individuals, and some rather influential people, such as Bill Warner in his (rather awful) comparison of the Crusades and Jihad.

I was wondering how much historical truth there is to this claim?
