During the age of Metternich, Habsburg Austria was a staunchly conservative patchwork of feudal territories. How is it that by the 1800s, the country had numerous liberal governments, created a capitalist economy and was the founding center of liberal Austrian Economics?

I'm currently reading Inventing the Way of the Samurai and I can't wrap my head around what the author is saying about post war Japan. He describes it as both militarized and "essentially synonymous with blind obedience". Yet he also writes about how these military leaders had a warped understanding of bushido. Was the idea seen as a positive thing like it was around the Meiji restoration, or was it no longer valued?

I'm writing a blog post about some colored/minority suffragettes and I'm noticing that they seem to write and talk about suffrage differently than the white suffragettes of the time.
Someone from Twoxchromosomes suggested is ask over here. I'm just looking for thoughts on this topic and resources.

So I'm reading "The Civil War" by Lucan and in one passage very early on he mentions "Ere this the Chinese might have passed under our yoke, and savage Araxes, and any nation that know's the secret of Niles cradle".
Now I'm aware that Rome and Han China would have been aware of each other existence. What I am wondering is how much would they know of each other. Lucan was a poet, so would the average Roman patrician know who the Chinese are? Or was this a translation error of some kind?

I do realize that Medieval archers were highly trained individuals, however how often did archers do any real damage in a battle scenario? Did arrows pierce metal armour or is that only depicted in movies? Also, was it not relatively easy to defend or brace against an archer assault for infantry with shields or helmets? I am of course taking about manual bows not the 21th century metal junk we have now. Thank you! :D

How does modern Historiography explain the creation of the scientific, economical and military advantage of the Europeans over the rest of the world that paved the way to the subjugation/conquest of it?( As this map properly illustrates).
Different paradigms and perspective are welcome but I'm particularly interested in analysis and criticism of Jarred Diamond (GGS) and Rodney Stark's (How the West Won: The Neglected Story of the Triumph of Modernity) works.

If Hitler had decided to live a typical life away from radical politics, would the Nazi party still have risen to total control of Germany?
Was it truly Hitler that tried to conquer Europe or was it inevitable with some other Nazi leader?

I recently came across an article that mentions that Moshe Dayan, then the chief of the Israeli general staff, was concerned that, should hostilities break out between Israel and Jordan, the British army would aid the Jordanians against the Israelis.
This is surprising to me since in the same year the British and the Israelis cooperated in the Sinai Campaign.
Can someone provide more information on:
