Was there a standard type of convoy ship during World War II?

As far as I know, besides the American Liberty Ship, there were not really any standard convoy ships. Were most or some convoy ships just pre-war shipping boats that had been converted?

Why were live-in domestic servants so much more common in the 19th and early 20th centuries than they are today?

I've been doing some family history research recently, and it appears that a number of my ancestors had servants/maids (not slaves) who lived in the house and assisted with domestic duties. None of these ancestors were exceptionally wealthy. For example, my paternal grandmother grew up with a servant in her household, and her dad earned about $5,000 a year (equivalent to about $90,000 a year today) according to the 1940 Census.

Today only the extremely wealthy have live-in servants. What accounts for this difference?

How much autonomy did vassal Kingdoms have in the German Empire?

Whenever I see an internal map of the German Empire, it shows that among the many internal divisions, there are Kingdoms, that presumably joined at the founding of the Empire. How much autonomy were these kingdoms, and the other vassals/substates, allowed?

How much drinking/hooking up/partying was there on college campuses, in the first half of the last century?

Movies and TV always make it seem like college parties were a fairly recent invention. But, given the censorship and moral boundaries on the media back then, it's hard to regard those as accurate.

What sort of dorm life was there in the '20s-'50s? If I went to a fraternity or sorority party, how hard would it be to get laid(and how much disapproval would I have to face from other people?) Did they have competitive beer pong?

Why are there images of sexy, scantily-clad women on the Throne of St. Peter in the Vatican?

I apologize if this question is offensive to anyone, but I don't know how else to describe it.

Bernini's famous installation has a hell of a lot going on, but if you look specifically just below the two cherubs on top of the seat itself you will see a pair of long-legged women in provocative poses who are just barely holding their robes on. What are they doing there? What do they represent in a monument that otherwise involves so many angels and clergymen?

The story involving Tesla - Was he really a genius or a crackpot or both?

So the story about Nikola Tesla and his apparent genius that I read about a few years ago was a stepping stone for me to learn that whatever I read about history, I should always take it with a pinch of salt because like the famous saying "History is written by the victors", our interpretations of history may be wrong until later disproven or elaborated more or some versions of history were a bit askew and not as straight-forward as we might think, such as I was told when I was very young that Edison was the one who invented the light bulb was an inventor of many things but I was later exposed to the information that he went to extremes to prove that AC was dangerous by electrocuting an elephant but he in fact used DC in order to sway the people

And later on, I was told also exposed to the cult following of Tesla and even I questioned the reasoning behind it and also realised how the whole "new information" about Tesla was also a bit wrong as well, if not sensationalised as well or he was given too much credit

But despite Tesla's scientific prowess and also apparent genius, I later learned that Tesla is now considered as a crackpot because he managed to have a good lawyer who allowed Tesla's patents to be approved over others, almost as if he had an ego that he wanted to show over others like he wanted some recognition or fame.

This is a bit confusing to me because as time goes on, I am learning more information about Tesla and how his story is often more complicated than I originally thought

In the TV series 'Sharpe', British officers of the Napoleonic wars are portrayed as uniformly posh and utterly inept at their jobs, with only a scant minority being actually upstanding and competent officers. How true is this?

This also seems to be a pattern in British military media in general.

The officers are posh, inept and are contrasted with grizzled, down to earth NCO veterans. They either get their comeuppance or grow into their position as more respectable officers.

What were the actual relationships between officers, NCO's and privates in the army at the time?

How gory was Napoleonic era warfare

I mean that surely it was not as bloody as 20th-century warfare as in hands and bits of flesh and shrapnel flying everywhere but I was just wondering, how bloody/gory it was

Have atheists always been a "thing"?

Textbooks and movies/television make it seem like, historically, people have always believed in some sort of god/deity, even if it wasn't part of the popular religion. When did atheism become a recognized philosophy? Have there always been true non-believers or is this a relatively new concept?

Any time between 1400-1800, what would be the average bottles of liquor transported in a crate on a sailing ship crossing the ocean from England to any of its random colonies?

I'm outlining a story I want to write using the "letters in bottles thrown into the ocean" device, and I need to know how long my story could end up being, maximum.

My time frame and location will probably change based on the answers here, so I'm willing to be flexible based on that.

Was the USSR under Stalin socialist or communist?

According to this Wikipedia article the USSR was socialist. But no private property was allowed and everything was controlled and owned by the government both of these were communist ideas.

Classical Marxism says that socialism is a middle ground between capitalism and communism.

And as far as I know, the USSR was the embodiment of far communism.

So how should I interpret this Wikipedia page, I'm a little confused now.

How effective was German armour on the Eastern Front compared to the Western Front, in the Second World War?

Popular history presents the German armoured units such as Panzers, Tigers, Panthers etc. as superior to most vehicles the allies could field. Whilst in certain cases this is true, how did British/French/American armour measure up in defeating their German counterparts (following the D-Day invasion) compared to Russian armour in the East?

Why are Romania and Hungary not considered as Slavic people?

I was looking at a map which showed the connection between different slavic languages (e.g. Polish, Czech and Slovak) and I was struck that neither Romania nor Hungary as slav? If they are not considered as slav, why is Macedonia, Bulgaria, Croatia etc. considered as slav? If you look here (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c6/Slavic_World.svg). Romania and Hungary make a 'border' between North and South slavic countries. Why is this?

What did people believe the Crab Nebula in 1054CE was, and what were the reactions to it suddenly becoming visible in the sky?

The topic of the Crab Nebula appeared in my physics course and I was informed that it appeared "almost as brightly as the moon in the sky at 1054" (paraphrasing my professor). A quick search around I found that there were records of Chinese, Japanese and Arabic astronomers/observers observing this event. As a result, what were the common beliefs of this event at the time, did they think it was a religious symbol or message, did they think it was something coming down from the sky/heavens to meet them eventually, did they think it was the birth of another star etc? Thank you so much
