I am interested in learning about (and writing about) the diplomatic relationships between Great Britain and the German Empire between the above dates. I am looking into the Balance of Powers in Europe that Britain sought to maintain, how the formation of a united Germany threatened to upset that, Germany seeking overseas colonies, the naval arms race, and any other important events that I may be missing. What I am wondering is what books or primary sources are must reads for me. Thanks in advance

I'm currently learning about the pig, partly because I find them delicious, but more so that I think the animal has played an important role in the development of communities. Reading material on the pig as a resource are suprisingly scarce. Any insight or book recommendations on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

I love maps. And I was just looking at this particular map of the Duchy of Milan (Dvcatvs Mediolanensis, Finitimarvmq; Regionvm descriptio Avctore Ioanne Georgio Septala Mediolanense), by Giovanni Giorgio Settala.
Around Milan (and not only) there are some weird looking rivers. Weird in the sense that they appear to have "crossings" and "bifurcations" (in Abia, Milano, Gorgonzola, etc). It's the kind of thing the fantasy cartography community at Cartographers' Guild or r/mapmaking would frown upon.. but there you have it - in a real world map.
So the question is this: are those misrepresentations of reality or representations of canals? Or neither? Thank you in advance!

I was reading about the battle of Cannae, and how the Romans were trapped on all sides with a river to their back. This seems like a situation that would almost certainly cause a crowd crush with a tightly packed crowd trying to escape death. We're crowd crushed common in ancient warfare? A Google search turned up.nothing about it, but I would imagine they were.

Basically if I lived in a pre gunpowder city that was about to be sacked by an invading army, what was going to happen to me, my family and my city.
I kind of have this idea of everyone gets killed, enslaved or raped but it seems like people continue to live in these cities afterwords so some people must survive?

I️ grew up in a really fundamental/weird Christian faith and believed there was a whole subspecies of giants... won’t get into the weirdness of “origins” and whatnot, just trying to see if there is any reasonable place these stories came from, or if it was probably just propaganda?
Thanks!

I've heard that the actual reason for pork not being considered kosher is that in ancient times pork was more likely to spoil and become unsafe to eat, and that the rule against eating pork began as a more practical, secular law that eventually found its way into religious law. I was wondering if there's a similar practical origin for circumcision, or if it is purely religious.

According to this map (https://i.redd.it/aqmw17w7w9o01.jpg) the Romans built more settlements in Britain than in places like France and Spain. Why is that?

Saw this image from this post on /r/MapPorn.
I'm accustomed to political maps like this one showing the region and extent of the Roman Empire. The uniform color-coded graphic format leaves the impression of uniform occupation of regions. But the city map isn't uniform.
Why so few cities in France? Why only one city in Africa and one city in Israel? Weren't Egypt, Greece, and Libya populous regions where one would expect Romans to found cities? Especially in war torn regions like Carthage, wouldn't the Romans found cities to replace destroyed cities?

Suffice to say, I go to a Jewish school that teaches the Torah as history and I'm not buying it.

So, this might be the wrong subreddit for this but I think that if I asked this on AskReddit I'd get too many weird replies. Sort of came about with the latest time travel ask though. Anyways:
How far back would you realistically have to go until a straight A High school student that completed all science, math and social science courses offered would be an equivalent to somebody that's completed University to any degree.
Might be worth noting for the future that I'm not from the US but from Norway.

I recently read and rather enjoyed The German War: A Nation Under Arms, 1939-1945 by Nicholas Stargardt and I would like to read a similar book (preferably by a Japanese historian) dealing with the experiences of Japanese civilians during World War II. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
If this type of question violates the subreddit rules, I would appreciate suggestions as to where to more properly pose/post it.

In a slight aside/ side-question; would nicknames be during the time or posthumous? I would imagine that every King would like his court to call him 'The Great', and would likewise not enjoy his court teasing him with a name.

He joined around 1940 and trained and worked under Patton as a tank commander. These are the only pictures I have from his time overseas.

Do you find it likelly that Gdansk could be raised by Balts instead of Slavs? It is located right on the border of these two ethnic groups after all and we don't have any legitimate sources about origins of the city.
