In the 1940s, the Superman radio program had him taking on the KKK. How was this received, nationwide, particularly in the south? Superman has an association with "all-American" values; had that already been established by this time?

Is it true that the Sacred Band of Thebes was composed of male lovers?

I've encountered a great deal of skepticism about the idea that the Sacred Band of Thebes was composed of male lovers. Were they composed of couples as many sources state, and if so, how does the Ancient Greek conception of same sex love between men compare with modern conceptions of sexual orientation?

Were warning leaflets dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki before the atomic bombs were dropped there?

I remembered finding out that this is a myth from reading this answer: https://redd.it/7wo0di by /u/restricteddata about a month ago. But after watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4m_BwYeIRo the maker of the video pointed me towards this CIA webpage that does show an image of a warning leaflet that says it was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki before the dropping of the bombs.

I’ve heard that Brigham Young founded Utah as a “White utopia” and was very anti-black.. classifying them as sub-human

Is there any truth to this? If so what are some actions he’s took to reinforce his bigoted beliefs? And had the mormon church apologized for his line of thinking?

Is there any historical figure that fits his legend in such a way that it couldn't be a coincidence? Or is he an amalgamation of a few figures and/or myths "stolen" from other cultures?

How vulnerable was the Dunkirk evacuation civilian effort to the Luftwaffe?

It seems to me like the mass of civilian boats travelling across the English channel would be the equivalent of sitting ducks to the German military. How much did the German airforce choose to victimise a fleet of boats captained by non-military personnel?

When did Spanish speakers people begin addressing God as tú (informal) instead of usted (formal)?

The Reina Valera is a spanish language translation of the bible published in 1602, and I was surprised to see that Jesus instructs his followers in Matt 6:5-15 to address God with the tú informal form of address. When did this practice start? Would a peasant at this time ever have addressed his "earthly" lord so informally? How did Jews and Muslims in Spain at this time address God?

Why does the King James Bible mention unicorns? And why are they evil or threatening?

So I saw this passage:

Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. [Psalms 22:21]

And that was weird so I looked up all mentions of them in the Bible and I found a lot like these:

His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns [Deut 33:17]

And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness. [Isiah 34:7]

God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. [Numbers 24:8]

Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? [Job 39:9, 10]

I'm not even sure when unicorns first appeared in myths but why are they in the KJV?

To what degree is the fantasy trope of “skilled warrior” - the knight who charges into battle time and again, emerging unharmed - reflected in reality?

The trope of a pre-gunpowder warrior who can swing his sword or axe with such aplomb that he survives multiple battles despite being in the thick of the action is pervasive in fantasy, but how frequent was such an occurrence? We have the weapons, the armour, the ranks and the rewards given out by victorious leaders, so we must surely understand how frequently a warrior of renown actually fought?

When did police officers start being referred to as "pigs"? Where does it come from?

I'm currently doing my senior seminar for my undergrad in history. I'm researching the Black Panther Party and I noticed in party literature they often refer to police officers as pigs. When did this come about?

(I promise this question is not related to my research, I'm doing a comparative analysis of how the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Defender wrote about the Black Panther Party)

Were Romans native Italians or refugees from the Trojan War? The Aeneid says Trojan, but that's mythology from the time of Augustus.

In 1927 Werner Heisenberg was in Copenhagen as an assistant to Neils Bohr. It’s here that he developed the Uncertainty Principle that bears his name. Do we know what happened to Werner original notes, are they kept as historical pieces?

I ask this as a lover of science and was a chemistry major in college. Physicists, Chemists among many other STEM studies heavily emphasize notes and documentation. Do we have access to his original notes? I know that we can view the original publications, but I’m very interested in the inner workings of a persons mind when they begin work like his.

Notes are a fascinating place to do this. I assume many societies treasure preserving Notebooks and manuscripts from the great minds of he yester-centuries.

If you are a Scientific Historian with experience in this. I’d love to know where I can view his or other Scientific historical notes.

Did the ancient Romans have a similar concept of 'wages' as we do today?

In essence modern wage is a compensation for the time worked. I was wondering if the Romans had something similar. Soldiers recieved a renumaration after a succesfull campaign. Slaves where provided with food and housing. But how did this work for citizens or freed slaves. Where they renumerated for time? Or provided with food and housing and paid per item (or unit) delivered?
