To what level did sex slavery and rape influence Southern opinion of slaves prior to the American Civil War?

Nobody ever really talks about it, but let's face it: by freeing slaves, you'd be taking away any guise of acceptability to raping black women. How important was this particular aspect of slavery in the eyes of an average slave owner?

In the late medieval Europe, would a forrest surrounding a castle/keep/fortification be an advantage or a disadvantage for the defending side?

My thoughts on the matter: Advantages: If the forrest is thick enough, the attacking army maybe wouldn't be able to completely surround the castle/keep/fortification. Disadvantages: The forrest could feed the attacking army and provide them with materials for siege weapons.

Since there are possibilities that I missed a huge factor, I decided to ask people who know better than me.

How do I find out where my grandfather went during the second world war?

My grandfathern, 93 years of age, recently opened up about his experience at the eastern front. He remebers very little detail of his experience. However, he is often telling me about the day he lost hope "for the cause". As they stayed in some village he got sick and was brought into someones local house at the eastern front. As he was lying there helplessly, a young woman entered his room with a jar of milk. took a sip from it, (to indicate that it wasn't poisoned?) and placed it next to him at his bedside. He still is very touched by this moment. I really would like to get some more context about where he went and probably stayed during the war to get a better idea about his past.

Could Askhistory point me into the right direction here regarding the information I would need and the places to look for this?

During the Civil Rights Movement and in the end of Apartheid, how were the white men that were sympthetic those causes seen by black people?

I'm specially intrested in white allies that weren't leaders. I suspect they would be met with initial relucance in some places, how would they overcome this? What role did they play in both movements? Are there interesting articles that could point me to more in depth information?

What enlightened the North side of the United States to realize that slavery is barbaric and had to be abolished?

It's strange, because the South was okay with it but somehow the North was not. It was obviously not a random development, however I can't find anything on the Internet that informs me about the roots of this ideology.

What were the effects of the Mexican Cession, and the Mexican American War in general, on the indigenous populations of the present day southwestern United States?

I have many additional questions about the Mexican American war, mostly to do with resistance, desertions, the San Patricios and Indigenous populations of the regions of Mexico most significantly affected by the war and conquest. So, I would appreciate if you could share any relevant sources as well. Thanks.

Is it true that in the 50's the average man could provide for his family by himself? (In contrast to now, where both man and woman seem to need to work to provide for the family)

Would that mean that people have become 50% poorer?

During the Renaissance, if homosexual acts were frowned upon- even punishable- why are there so many homoerotic works of art?

I'm currently taking a class at my university called That's So Gay: An Exploration of Homophobia and Camp in Art. My topic of choice is the The Male Form: Automatically Homoerotic? I'm currently researching how different societies view the male body as gay, whether as negatively or positively.

Right now I'm fascinated by Italy during the Renaissance. It seems like many of the artists during this time were gay, like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. How did they "get away" with creating so many homoerotic works of art when there were literal night police that would arrest gay men? In my research I've discovered that Leonardo was actually arrested twice for sodomy with a "notorious prostitute" Jacopo Saltarelli. He was soon released afterwards.

Even still, how were they able to create such works of art while their personal lives were "illegal"? Or am I thinking something incorrectly? Any input would be absolutely wonderful!!

What was the point of Patton’s fake army in WWII?

I remember learning about how Patton had staged a fake army in Great Britain to trick the Germans a little before Operation Neptune. And that the Germans expected the Allies to land at Calais being led by Patton. But why would they need to fake an army? What good does that do? Why does it matter if the Germans saw the real or fake army?

What was the social/political perspective of black men in 1830s England?

I recently began watching "The Frankenstein Chronicles" on Netflix, which is set in 1830s England. I would consider the show "historical science fiction," since it includes real-life figures such as Mary Shelley and Sir Robert Peel.

There is only one black person in the show, a character by the name of Joseph Nightingale, who becomes a high-position officer of the Metropolitan Police Force.

Which made me wonder, would this be historically accurate? All I know is that a black man in such a position of power would be nearly impossible in 1830s America, but I'm unsure about the social and political situation of England during that time.

(To be clear, I'm not bothered that they're including a black man even if it isn't 100% historical. I am just genuinely curious and would like to become more educated on the subject.)

TL;DR would it be possible for a black man to become a high-ranking police officer in 1830s England?

How were the scythians able to make such stunning jewelry, yet had no writing system?

I'm asking this question because I'd assume that the logistics (getting the rare materials, crafting the jewelry etc.) of crafting such jewelry would be way out of scope for such a society like the scythians. Did they get it from somewhere else? Is it just something they aquired while raiding? Is a non literary civilization able to make such things on their own without having problems during the work process? Furthermore is it even important for a society (like the scythians) to have a writing system?

Why did the early Greek & roman writers call Great Britain and Ireland the Prettanic Isles or Qritani isles?

Giving the separation of p & q Celtic and later Gaelic and brythonic language ,why would the greeks call these isles to be inhabited by the britons when one group was Goidelic or Gaelic . the only britons in ireland were the Qritani = Priteni which was used for the people of the whole island of Britain ,the Qritani were regarded as foreigners in ireland though later after the roman conquest Qritani was more used for the picts of northern britian ., also its important to note that the cruthin are not considered Qritani the irish clearly made a distinction between the two groups and chruthin was more used by outsiders to distinguish between those of Érainn ancestry and those of Priteni, ancestry or chruthin . though culturally the Chruthin were very much irish at least when they appear in written records .

Is the field of History in essence romanticist?

Hey,

I'm currently following a philosophy course about natural law vs positivism and in the past I followed a few historical courses. In essence, I understood that the field of history had given up on trying to turn history in a ''model'', preferring to simply study things as they are.

Now in essence rationalism contains the idea that everything adheres to a universal order and a rational system. Things are objectively good and bad, things are ideally ordened through reason etc. Romanticism on the other hand rejects the idea of a universal order and says that everything is unique and individual, and therefore cannot be compared.

It feels to me the battle in history of historical models vs no historical models is therefore an extension of the centuries old battle of Rationalism versus Romanticism. Now that historical models have fallen out of grace, has history become essentially romanticist with a focus on individuality and the uniqueness of every historical person/action? Or is that kind of Ranke-ism not applicable anymore either?

How Active Was Alexander the Great in his Battles?

Obviously a lot about Alexander was romanticized, but one thing I've always heard, my entire life, is that Alexander inspired confidence by fighting alongside his men.

I don't find that itself hard to believe, but I often hear things like him "being the first one up the ladder or over the wall".

This is where I grow skeptical, because I know that antiquity-era battles had pretty high body counts, and I have doubts about Alexander running headlong into army after army and somehow surviving.

So I ask you, what do we know about Alexander's actual participation in the battles during his campaign?

I know it's an ancient practice dating back to the Neolithic era, but I couldn't find a very good explanation online. There seems to be a lot of different explanations offered, saying it was used to treat traumatic brain injuries and/or to release evil spirits. Can I get some clarification?
