Home governance while on campaign

How did home governance work while the king/emperor was on campaign thousands of miles away? Surely he would have enemies that would be looking for an opportunity to usurp him, how did the king maintain his power and control?

Streetscape and city life in Pompeii

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good litterature on the topic in the title?

I'm going to be writing a bachelor-level paper on this topic this term, but I would like to have some background knowledge before meeting my counselor.

Any and all revelant litterature is received with thanks.

How did ancient manuscripts survive for us to be able to read them today? Were they stored away?

I am reading Meditations by Marcus Aurelius at the moment, and wondered at how it got into my hands today. It was written in the 2nd Century A.D. Did it sit in a vault in Rome for 1500 years until it was published? Or in a monastery? Also, are we very lucky to have even a few ancient texts like these today, and that most of them were lost over the centuries? I have searched the internet for answers but have found none. Thanks

Roman victory parades, with a slave in the cart whispering «Remember, thou art mortal”?

Saw this quote today, with no reference. Sounds overly interesting, anyone inow if it had some truth?

————————

When a Roman consul returned home after a particularly spectacular military campaign abroad, a “Triumph” was held – which was a parade through the streets Rome celebrating his accomplishments. But there was an additional component that (as it was told to me then), a slave would be put in the chariot beside the consul, who’s sole job throughout the Triumph was to whisper into the victorious leader’s ear “Remember, thou art mortal”.

Were Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus' reforms akin to the Homestead Act in the US?

Currently I am listening to "SPQR" and I am at the part when the author looks at Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus and their proposed land reforms to give captured land to the poor. Is this analogous to what the US did with the Homestead Act? I'm seeing some parallels but I am wondering if I am correct in thinking this.

Why is the accordion so popular in French culture?

If you ever see a French movie or listen to French music, there is a big chance that it will include an accordion. It has even become a steriotype and a trope for whenever something French is portrayed in Hollywood.

How did the accordion become so prevalent in French culture?

Advice on a paper regarding trireme and democracy in classical athens

Greetings first of all I am student studying Accounting and happen to have taken a classics elective. I took classics course because I love reading about anything interesting about history from Rockefeller to Ceasar you name it.

Right now we are tasked with writing a wiki page. We were to select a topic from a pool chosen by our instructor. We have to write a 500 word wiki about our selected topic and how it relates to democracy in Athens. I happen to choose triremes out of the pool.

I just want advice on what I should be asking myself when writing this "wiki". I don't really understand what "How trireme relates to democracy?" means. How do I approach it?

So far I have some excerpts from the following:

  1. Demosthenes, Speeches by Demosthenes(about Trierachy)
  2. The use of slaves by athenians in warfare by Rachel L. Sargent
  3. Democracy in Classical Athens by Christopher Carey
  4. The Greco-Persian war by Peter Green

I have read quite a bit about Triremes, but I still do not know what to write. I would really appreciate any advice on how to approach this research project given to me.

I'm looking for diaries or reports from the everyday person (17th century and all the way backwards) that describe how the day-to-day life was for them back then. Where can I find those?

I'm interested in all regions as long as they fit the criteria.

What is a good introductory book to the history of the united states (from the beginning of European settlement)?

I want to make sure that i have a good understanding of the basics of the history of the united states; from the beginning of settlement to as close to the present day as possible. The history of the native Americans preceding the beginning of settlement is interesting to me, but i want to wrap my head around the history of colonisation and the American nation state first.
