I recall my 3rd-4th grade teacher telling us that during this time in American history, men would put bags of sugar underneath their stockings to make their calves look bigger, and then when it would rain, all the sugar would melt. Is there any truth to this?

I know this is a very broad question, considering the different eras involved, but I am having a hard time finding an answer to it so turned to reddit. Wikipedia (great source, I know) seems to draw mostly from Bushido—the Soul of Japan, which I’ve heard is heavily romanticized. If anyone who knows about the subject could help, it would be much appreciated

I have always wondered how people in ancient times (middle age Europe, Roman, or Greek periods) woke up at certain times? If a person was say a blacksmith and had to be to work at 6 am, how could they ensure they woke up in time? Or is arriving at a job at a set time a recent change?

I know that codpieces were a significant item of wear for a few centuries. They became quite elaborate and intricate. Did kings or nobles have any memorable codpieces, that perhaps they would hand down as an heirloom even?

When Alexander's horse Bucephalas died, he had a city named after it called Bucephala. What happened to that city? Are there any remnants of it in modern India?

This is written on front and back. One side looks like a sales ledger? The date is 1864 and some of the names are Abraham Lincoln, James Madison, George H Brown and a few others I can't make out. The other side has the beginning of a story called "The history of an old wolf" It seems to be written in both English and possibly German. A date of 1864 on that side as well, possibly Jan 3. Any help would be appreciated and I can try to send better pictures to anyone interested. Thank you

Currently in history class, we are covering Hitler and the third Reich. As I understand, Hitler had a deep hate on Poland due to so many Jews living there. But as I did research for a presentation, it became clear to me that Hitler didn't really care about Poland and conquered it only for the sake of creating a border to Russia, which was his actual and primary target.
I am quite confused. I would greatly appreciate it if some of you could clear the fog for me.

Greetings,
one thing I noticed is that a number of helmet findings from late antiquity and the migration period(including a short period into the medieval timeframe) still have cheek protection, not unlike those used already for centuries earlier throughout antiquity.
But then, this is abandoned and the only face protection, if any is there, is usually just the nasal, and this continues for centuries until the nasal itself is expanded upon in the 12th century and finally the early enclosed helm appears at either the very late 12th century or the early 13th century(depending on who you ask).
In fact, during the 11th and 12th century, it appears that in both Europe and the Middle East(also North Africa I suppose), warriors seem to rather raise their mail protection to cover portion of their face rather than to add material onto their helms.
Does anyone have any insight as to why cheek protection on helmets was abandoned so, after dozens of centuries of use?
I thank you in advance,
Fellow

To add on, I saw this when looking up Operation Dawn, which I read in Michael B. Oren's book as an imminent attack on Israel by Egypt cancelled hours before it would commence before the Six-Day War. However, another author, John Quigley, writes that there is little evidence of this operation being close to launch or that Israeli's were particularly bothered by it.

My teacher said these two let Hitler be chancellor because believed they could control him, is this true? If so, then why?

I’ve heard this story passed around during the previous government shutdown that basically went “Australia had a shutdown in 1975. The Queen subsequently fired all of parliament after they did that.” However, today I saw some comments from Australians on reddit saying that that narrative is terrible, and the event was more equivalent to something like watergate. I looked into it more, and it seemed very interesting (some people even described the crisis as an actual coup). So, I was wondering if someone here could give a rundown on the events surrounding the shutdown to a complete outsider, and how it affected Australia in general?

To me it seems an oddity that there are not at least three independent countries, say, the North, the Northeast, and the South. How has this enormous country kept together in the face of so many centrifugal forces?

From here
Remember how James Bond's adversaries suddenly changed from the Russian spy agency S.M.E.R.S.H. to the unaligned spy organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E.? That was because Ian Fleming was worried the Cold War was going to end too quickly. In 1959, Ian Fleming was working on a screenplay for a new Bond film, which later became his novel Thunderball and finally spawned two movies. (It's a long story.) But Fleming was worried it would take two years to produce Thunderball, and by 1961 a story about the Cold War might seem outdated, or worse.
On what possible grounds could he have thought that? And how did he think it would end?

Today:
Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.
So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!
