Ukraine's main historical geographic areas can be simplified into two regions: right-bank and left-bank. These areas are on opposite sides of the Dnieper River, which runs in a north to south line pretty much directly down the middle of Ukraine. However when looking at Ukraine on a map, the regions of right-bank and left-bank are "opposite" of what we expect. The right-bank is on the west side of the Dnieper, and the left-bank is on the east. Why is this so?

This definitely was not the case but for some reason, this myth is extremely widespread, to the point that majority of people seem to think that is how it actually was. So where does this myth originate from?

Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Another year has come and gone, giving us plenty to reflect upon regarding the previous 12 months, not to mention the next 12 to come. As in past years, we like to close things out with a thread devoted specifically to reading, one of the favorite activities of many users here! Whether history or not, fiction or non-fiction, this thread is intended to chat about what you read over the past year, and also what you are hoping to tackle for 2018.
So, fellow Historians, what did you read last year!? What was the best!? What was the worst!? What are you putting on your shelf for the year to come!?

FA badge Bulgarian coat of arms Can someone provide a little more info on wether the similarities are just a coincidence or there is more to it? I know lions are rather popular but the resemblance is unusually high. Both have around 3 centuries separating them. Cheers!

I recently watched the move "darkest hour" and one scene in the middle of the movie had me puzzled of if it was real or Hollywood fiction. in the scene winston churchill is making a desperate plea to rosevelt over the phone for American help as Britain faced what they thought was imminent invasion of germany in may 1940. in the movie rosevelt said he cant do much because of the neutrality acts nor can he deliver britain the planes they ordered with american capital. rosevelt as a stop-gap measure suggests leaving the planes 1 mile from the canadian border and then the canadians can use horses to drag them the rest of the way into canada so britain can get the much needed equipment.
in the movie churchill doesn't really show the audience a clear answer of if he took up Roosevelt on the offer. so i want to know if it in real life america secretly gave planes to Britain in may or june of 1940 by leaving them 1 mile from the Canadian border and having horses drag them across? Or maybe via a similar sneaky method?

I’m trying to find Robert “the admiral” Le Blount’s coat of arms. He was a companion of King William the conqueror.
How would I go about finding his coat of arms?

I've heard the Germans were looking into atomic weapons but how many in the general public knew about the possibility of atomic weapons or what they even were?
Also was Germany the only other country looking into atomic weapons or was it only the USA?

I think this might be the best subreddit for this question. I've been listening to the Hamilton soundtrack lately and wondered how accurate it actually is to history?

Or to put it differently, what account did the fascists give of their policies? To clarify, I'm referring to the Italian political movement, not the Nazis; and their specific policies, the nuts-and-bolts of their administration, not their overarching goal of "make the nation strong". What problems did they identify in contemporary politics or economics, and how did they intend to fix them?

I recently saw documentary portraying that Hitler was somehow taken to Argentina, like many Nazis. Is there any dilemma to the way Hitler died?(suicide with Eva, then burned outside the bunker)

This question came up a few minutes ago as I noticed I have a lot of first hand sources for the history of other famous leaders - for example the complete works of Josephus , the works of Lucy Mack Smith, a book of first hand accounts from the American Revolution etc - but nothing on the history of Anne boleyn and .Henry VIII.
Boleyn is a fascinating figure for me but one who also feels a bit inaccessible. Whilst I have read some good books on her - most notably The Creation of Anne Boleyn - I have yet to find any first hand sources. The same goes for her husband Henry VIII.
What accounts and sources would you historians recommend?

Hi there! I'm an undergrad studying history right now with the hopes of becoming a historian and/or professor. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what sort of internships I should look for that would build a resume for this kind of career? I'm sort of lost and need to start planning for the summer, so any advice would be extremely helpful. Thanks so much!

Wood has a great weight/strength ratio (like CRP ), it's cheap, easy to work with, saves metals for something else, you can use furniture factories. British and Russians did it in Mosquito and La-5/7 production. Why Germans didn't do the same ?

I know that Nebraska was further away from other states, making the trip from another state longer and more arduous, but did nothing happen in Nebraska while people were killing each other in Kansas?
