What was Nixon's public life like after his resignation?

How was he treated by the media? Did they ever have him on to discuss the politics of the day, or was he largely dismissed and/or ignored? It seems to me that he would have been able to share an interesting perspective, but he was largely hated if I understand correctly. Did he have enough followers that he would have been able to get his thoughts across? Was he still sour about the Watergate Investigation when he died? How did he feel about other political events that followed his resignation, such as the Reagan Revolution or the end of the Cold War? Was he able to sell books or do big speeches for money like other presidents after him? Did he devote his time to other causes or charities? Did he have any hobbies that we know of, like W's painting?

How would you rank the journals in your speciality? Are any universally important?

So, the impression I have is that American Historical Review is the top ranked journal in history. But Americanists, Europeanists, Early Americanists, Medievalists, etc. probably would rank journals below AHR differently. How would you rank them through the lens of your specialization? What journals from outside history (e.g. Area Studies) would be important? What about journals that aren't in English (e.g. if you're a Germanist, what German journal(s) do you use?)? And how well would these rankings match up with impact factors (for example, I have the impression that Past and Present is quite a bit more influential than its impact factor would imply)?

Roman Empire transition to Christianity

After the conversion of Constantine I to Christianism and the Edict of Milan, how fast was the actual conversion of the empire to Christianism?
I mean, in the more remote provinces like Lusitania in the west or Armenia in the east, was it felt in a short span of time, or was there resistance to change from the local rulers and it ended up being more of a theoretical thing than actually happening for the (previously) prosecuted Christians there?

Old drills received from grandfather (the Netherlands)

I received some drills from my grandfather. Apparently they have been passed down for some generations. I would be curious if anybody here knows anything more about such drills. From which time period could they be? We're in the Netherlands, if that matters.

Pictures of the drills can be found here: http://imgur.com/a/iibec

Living as a non-wealthy person in ancient Rome how confident could I be that I would not starve as long as I had a trade?

Hearing of grain shortages (and subsidies), and poor harvests and plagues with catastrophic results on the economy it seems as though there would not necessarily be a guarantee that next year, or the year after, there would be grain to buy at the market or at least at an affordable price?

How secure would my food supply be if I did not own crop-bearing land or participate in trade directly? Would starvation be a concern for the most extreme situations or more of a fact of life?

How many times does Satan appear to someone in the Christian Bible?

The only times I can recall are to Eve as a snake, and to Jesus in the desert. Other than that, does he explicitly appear to anyone else?

Was there a drive-by-marriage in Islam?

I remember reading a blog post by an, I assume, ex-muslima where she says that, during some of the islamic conquests the invading muslims invented a sort of drive-by-marriage which would last only a couple of hours/days. It's main purpose would be to make sex with female captives of war halal. My first question, is this true?

And if so, what was the need for it? I thought forced sex with female captives was legitimized during those times. Are there any comments on this practice by islamic scholars throughout history?

The german wikipedia seems to imply that the ottoman sultan forced the two party leaders of a byzantine civil war to fight for him against their own city philadelphia.

The english wiki is not that clear, although it seems like it is a direct translation for most of it.

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eroberung_von_Philadelphia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_of_Philadelphia

Now i was wondering if those two byzantines were actually enemies but forced to fight for the same side. Since everything else i find about those two guys does not seem to imply that.

Anyways, i would be happy to have some more information about the siege/fall of philadelphia.

If anyone could shed some light on this, i would be grateful

Why did the Japanese agree to the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty?

The Washington Naval Treaty appears to set in place a large number of limitations on the expansion of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The IJN has just come off a pair of successful wars, it is being funded by a militaristic, nationalistic, government, and has been expanding pretty rapidly.

Why would they agree to the limitations set forth, especially at this time? It seems like the Treaty upset a large portion of the Japanese military establishment as well, was there something else going on behind the scenes?

Mexican Silver Dollars in East Asia in the 19th century: Why?

During the 1860s, the Tokugawa shogunate paid a large indemnity to European powers in Mexican silver dollars: a detail that I finally got curious about the other day. Why Mexican silver dollars? Googling tells me that Mexican silver dollars were everywhere in East Asia, and had become a preferred form of currency in China by at least the 19th century. In Japan, they were stamped with the shogunate's determined value and sent into internal circulation.

Why would these coins be so wide-spread and in such demand for commerce? How did they get in such large quantities to East Asia? I have a few hunches, but would like to hear real information.

In the Bronze Age, how common was it for brand new cities to be built as opposed to rebuilding on sites that were previously inhabited but abandoned or destroyed?

To narrow the scope, let's keep this to the Mediterranean/Near East, but if someone can speak about how this played out in India/China, that'd be awesome too!
