How did Christianity develop differently in West and East Germany from 1945 until 1997?

(Since 1997 is as far as this sub goes)

I'm interested in whether the Capitalist/Communist areas had very different effects on Christianity. Obviously in East Germany the government was anti-religion (but how much? Marxist govts vary a lot on how they deal with religion, and I'm not familiar enough with German communism to know), while in the West you had the CDU as a key party. But on the other hand, the unpopularity of the Communist govt might have made Christianity more popular in East Germany, as being anti-establishment or something.

I know today, that Germany is one of the less religious countries in Europe (though not the least), but I wonder if there are significant differences between East and West.

How historically accurate is Ken Burns' Civil War?

I just started watching it with my dad not too long ago, and it got me thinking: just how historically accurate is it? I enjoy it very much, but I still want to know, nonetheless.

Why the large Scandinavian contingent in Minnesota?

I just watched the 1996 movie Fargo for the first time. It was extremely brilliant.

To my European ear they sounded like Dutch or Scandinavian English speakers with that distinctive accent. I just read on Wikipedia that 32% of the Minnesota population is Scandinavian in ancestry so I assume that explains the accent.

Can someone enlighten me with a brief history of Minnesota, as state I know nothing about (other than its geographic position, associated climate and football team), in regard to its Scandinavian heritage?

Looking at this Wikipedia page it seems that Scandinavians emigrating to the US settled overwhelmingly in that band of states on the Canadian border, and particularly North Dakota and Minnesota. Why is that the case?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavian_Americans#Scandinavian_Americans_by_state

And finally, as an aside, is the North Dakota accent similar?

Suddenly it makes sense why the football team is called the Vikings anyway!

Why did Kennedy's assassination's investigation never consider a potential Soviet plot, despite the convenience of the theory, considering Oswald's sojourn in the USSR some years prior?

Kennedy's death occurred at what some people may consider the height of the Cold War, with the Cuban missile crisis, the Bay of Pigs invasion and such events.

Oswald was a self-proclaimed "supporter" of Communism who went to live in the USSR and even brought home a Russian wife. Despite the convenience of placing the blame on a Soviet plot behind the assassination, this potential option was never explored, neither formally nor informally by US investigation and other authorities.

Why?

Was the coexistence of the three monotheistic faiths in muslim Spain overvalued ?

It seems that Jews and Christians were second class citizens under muslim rule (dhimmis). They were protected and respected but payed higher taxes and didn't enjoy as many rights as their fellow muslim citizens. Were they forced to live peacefully with one another ?

Did the average Greek citizen understand Greek Theatre and Poetry

I was recently reading through some old Greek literature and was wondering how much of the content of these plays the average Athenian could understand/comprehend. The plays of Sophocles for example, seem to me relatively high brow even by modern standards.

I'd also be interested to know how Homer's epic poems were experienced, given how long it is (my audio book was almost a dozen hours) and the necessity of a trained bard to be able to hear it.

I'm languishing in an East German prison. It's 1989, the Wall just came down and Germany's about to be reunified. What's going to happen to me?

Something I've wondered about for a while is what happened with the criminal justice systems in Eastern Europe post-1989. I picked Germany in this instance because my understanding is that the process of "Westernising" the government in the East was perhaps a bit more rapid than in the other countries with new democratic governments. I'm of course also interested in whether this process was different from place to place.

So, in this theoretical situation, I'm in prison for a crime that's accepted as a crime both in East and West Germany. What I'm specifically wondering about is:

  • First off, is my conviction simply transferred over and accepted as valid or is there a process of review underway? Is someone going through all my case files to make sure I'm not in here because of my politics? To see if the way the evidence against me was obtained was up to standard?

  • What happens to the prison I'm in? It presumably doesn't meet Western standards, am I getting sent to a new one or is that just too hard for now?

  • Is there any chance I might get re-sentenced so it matches what I might have received if I'd done what I did in the West?

  • Do I have a bunch of new processes I can use to appeal?

What was the real reason the Cuban Missile Crisis ended?

So my US history is a bit rusty, but the way I learned it, the USSR totally had the upper hand with the whole missiles in Cuba situation. Why did they/the US back down? Was it just a collective "Oh fuck, mutual destruction is too real, let's backpedal" or were the reasons more complicated? I'm sure my understanding is at least a little bit colored by winners bias, I learned about it from a US public school.

Just recently became re-interested in this since embargo is lifted now, and Cuba seems like a not awful place to visit (it's no Venezuela).

Last time I asked this question was in high school and I got called a Communist for it.

As far as American suburbs go, is this a relatively accurate cycle for the growth of suburbs?

If you incorporate a new suburb, people move in.

You're given two choices for your suburb, primarily commercial, or primarily residential.

If you decide to go the business route, you're primarily commercial enterprises with relatively few residential areas (example - Woodmere Ohio, its near my house, has 120 businesses, population is 800). From here, the cycle goes:

-Lots of industry/business = low property taxes (to attract business)

-Low property taxes = lower income families

-Lower income families = less desire for industry/business (excluding cheap places like mcdonalds or gas stations)

-Less desire for industry = higher taxes (since the suburb now needs to generate money somehow and the only way to do so is to tax its residents)

-Higher taxes = higher income residents (poorer families can no longer afford the taxes)

-Higher income residents = more demand for industry/business

-More demand for industry/business = lower property taxes (to attract more business)

And the cycle continues? Is this relatively accurate? Is it accurate to say that suburbs are given a choice as to where on this cycle they wish to stop, and from there their towns will grow as either a primarily residential or primarily commercial town?

I'm asking as someone who lives in Cuyahoga County Ohio, where there are 59 separate county subdivisions. Some of these subdivisions have less than 1000 residents, but thrive off of their low incorporation fees, but at the same time tend to unfairly tax their residents. On the other hand, there are lots of suburbs that exist for primarily residential reasons and are unattractive to businesses (Shaker Heights/Seven Hills/Bratenahl) due to their high taxes. So is the cycle I proposed at all accurate?

TLDR - read the list of steps in my cycle. is it accurate as far as suburban growth in the USA goes??

Was there some kind of jewish nationalism in the Second Polish Republic? Furthermore, was there a wish to establish a jewish nation within the borders of the newly revived Poland?

It is widely known that post-WW1 Poland had the largest jewish minority in Europe. Considering how poorly eastern european jews were integrated, was there ever an attempt to create a predominantly jewish ethnic-religious state on the likes of modern Israel within Poland or were polish jews too spread out to make this a reality?

Why was there such a large amount of emigration from Andalusia to Latin America during the Colonial Period?

It baffles me as to why this region had such an impact on the language and culture of the colonies when it was the most recent addition to the continental Spanish crown.

Research: Help finding US Navy photograph?

Please let me know if this doesn't belong here.

My great grandfather served on a US Navy battleship from maybe 1918-1926. My family never took much interest in his service (they don't even know the name of the ship), but we had a photograph with the entire crew lined up on deck. Unfortunately the picture was stolen when I was a kid. I've taken an interest in the family history and would like to track it down if possible.

Is there any way I can find a record of what ship my great grandfather was assigned to? And if that is possible, since it was such a major vessel and the photograph was of the entire crew it must be archived somewhere, right? What resources are available that could help me with this?

Thanks.

The Secretary of State has said that from now on, The USA will deprioritize the export of American values through the State Department. When has the USA successfully championed it's values in foreign relations?

“In some circumstances, if you condition our national-security efforts on someone adopting our values, we probably can’t achieve our national security goals,” Tillerson said

Can anyone provide some historical context on the tradition he intends to change? Has the US ever viewed foreign policy through the perspective of ethics rather than self-interest?

What caused the dramatic decline in concerns about human overpopulation after 1974?

I performed a Google Books Ngram Viewer search of the term "overpopulation," and it climbs steadily until about 1960. After that, it rises dramatically until 1974, at which point it falls off very quickly. 1974 looks like a watershed year for concerns about overpopulation. Why is that? What happened?

Can I get a source for this reference to hallucinogenic 17th-century European werewolves??

In "Early Medieval Balkans" by John Fine Jr, he reports that Bajan, the fourth son of Bulgarian Emperor Symeon, was reported by one source to have studied magic and possessed the power to transform himself suddenly into a wolf. The author goes on to coyly write, "Whether Bajan... achieved his transformations, as our source states, through magic practices, possibly through hallucinogens (a means which can be documented for seventeenth-century European werewolves), is unknown."

Could someone please elaborate on whatever 17th-century documentation of werewolves he's mentioning???
