Japan is often presented as a close ally that more or less always adhered to American foreign policy. How true was this? Did Japan ever go against the American doctrine in Asia?

In other words, what is the difference between 1945-1970 and 1970-2010 in terms of foreign policy, economics, and social life?

In various popular media, like Hellboy and the Tannhauser game, the Nazis are depicted as having been heavily involved in the occult and even tried to research and use it for weapons. Were they really involved with the occult, and if so to what degree and how much was for weapons development?

Jimmy Carter had one of the highest approval ratings when he was inaugurated and lost the 1980 election by a landslide. What made the public turn on him?

Hi, I just watched a trailer for the new movie about Dunkirk and I wanted to know why didn't the British Navy send the massive and powerful homefleet which had aircraft carriers, battleships, destroyers etc. to rescue the stranded army in Dunkirk, instead of using civilians?

Bonus question: how did the "buzz" you could get from a can of 1880s Coke compare to a modern-day caffeine bomb like an energy drink or coffee chain latte? Also, how skeptical were people of Coca Cola's original advertising? Did people consider soft drinks to be "healthy" in the public consciousness back then?
Aside: I'm a sucker for old marketing, so if you have any contemporaneous ads I'd be extremely grateful if you shared them.

Years ago, I remember being told a story of a man so wealthy, that when he travelled across Africa, he altered the very economic landscape. Is there an accurate and detailed account of this? I'm interested in the long term effects of that Grand Tour.

Does this not make her rule slightly more impressive? I know that traditional historians have hated her and called her "bloody Mary" for her persecution of protestants, but I feel like she deserves way more credit for managing to succeed economically and politically, especially in spite of Edward's reign.
In fact, I seem to remember a number of her policies were kept by Elizabeth, including a naval reform that was a contributing factor in the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

I have a friend who said this to me and it bothers me a lot. I just don't know how to effectively tell him he is wrong.

I'm wondering why the Annales historians moved away from broad narratives and started to focus on smaller communities (microhistory?) in the later 20th century. I was thinking because it was their interest in the history of mentalities, and this would be easier to analyze in smaller communities (such as Montaillou with LeRoy Ladurie) as opposed to huge geographical expanses (Mediterranean with Braudel).

I love the discipline of the moderation and the resulting quality of the content here.
I do not love the very typical "gotcha" of an interesting question that says it has 47 answers, and actually it has the standard mod message and 46 deletions...
So could we get some kind of flag or other indication for the (somewhat rare) posts that actually get real answers?

Because I heard that nobody expects the spanish inquisition.
Seriously, was this a joke or based in fact?

ETA: What I am most specifically wondering about is this unsourced claim that someone in the expedition thought that Bigfoot was the "missing link to Aryan race."

Even after heavy loses at the beginning of Barbarossa, the Red Army was still able to field 401 division as opposed to Axis 181. How?

I'm sorry if this question is not appropriate for this sub but here goes. Im a college student wanting to do sone personal studying over the summer on the French Revolution. Can anyone recommend a good academic level book or maybe some good resources? I am particularly interested in who the major players were, social causes, and just a deeper look than the average book on the subject. Thanks.
