Did the "Reign of Terror" of the French Revolution helped to inspire terrorist acts in the late nineteenth century?

Further: Can the reign of terror be thought of as the genesis of modern terrorism?

How did Bosnia Herzegovina came to be?

How did Bosnia & Herzegovina came to be? Why is it one country? How did it become muslim?

From what i found, Bosnia Herzegovina has 3 main groups. The serbs in eastern-nothern bosnia, the Croats in the rest of the country, mane of whom are muslim.

So how did this happen? Why didn't the people just join their actual countries (Serbia - Croatia) and how did some Croats in the area stay muslim after the Ottomans left?

The Longbow and The New World

Hello,

I live in an area where there was an English colony established in 1634. I have read in original documents that settlers were required to bring a sword, a gun, and as much as 40 pounds of powerder and 10 pounds of lead.

What I'm wondering is if the Longbow made any real appearance in the New World at all?

I have read that Jamestown imported some 400 bows - but evidently these were immediately shipped off to Bermuda (?!) to be stored "in case of emergency" (rather inaccessable if you ask me, colony or not). The fear was the natives would reverse engineer them and try to make copies of their own (as it was noted that the native bows were inferior).

I am told that there was a legal requirement to practice archery from at least the 1400s in England, and that this lead to having a large number of trained archers "on tap".

I know that the longbow was well on its way out by the early 17th century, but the last battle we have of their use is another decade or so in the future, so I presume that this requirement was still in place and people still trained in archery.

So, when the English started to establish their colonies, did longbows ever begin to make an appearance? For things like hunting (longbow would be somewhat overkill) or even low intensity conflict, I would imagine it would help preserve shot and powder, which may or may not be coming on the next ship (which may or may not arrive).

What little information I have it seems they basically were not there, which seems a little odd to me. But, right now I have little to go on.

Thanks!

This comment claims that Einstein's theory of relativity was largely stolen from work done by Poncairé. How accurate is that?

How did the invention of firearms impact the use of heavy armor in armies?

I did some search on the sub and found nothing on the subject.

How did the invention of firearms made armors being less and less used? This question popped into my mind when I was watching a work of fantasy and I saw an armored knight use a gun (a very primitive one, capable of only one shot) and then dropping it to the ground.

What was the implication that firearms had on warfare and specifically the use of armor?

Bonus question: is there a website or gallery where I can check the 'styles' of different heavy armor and helmets per nation? I was always curious about that and the differences between them.

Reading suggestions for Germany (WWII or otherwise)?

Hi, I'm traveling to Munich and Berlin for a few days in May. The trip is designed around visiting Dachau, Sachsenhausen and generally exploring the cities.

I have previously visited Krakow and Auschwitz and reading the aligned literature really helped me understand the place more.

While I have previously read several books about life in concentration camps and stuff like Anne Frank, are there any books that I could read before travelling to appreciate my trip more?

(Doesn't need to be WWII related, I also am intrigued by the old german folk tales)

Thank you all!

How many cannonballs would an army bring to battle in the early 19th century?

I'm thinking well-equipped European armies, like Napoleon's, that might bring dozens or hundreds of cannons to a major battle.

  • How was ammo allocated at the start of battle? Per cannon, per group of cannons, or as-needed?
  • Do we have any numbers for how many cannonballs a single cannon could have/fire (or how many an army might bring in total)?
  • Would a single cannon be able to fire multiple types of ammo in one battle, or was a single type determined ahead of time? Would different cannons be firing different ammo (not just poundage, but type)?

Thanks!

Are there any good blogs that point out in/accuracies in historical fiction?

I love historical fiction in all of its (mostly trashy) glory. TV shows, movies, books, I can't get enough. I try to stay away from things that are blatantly, knowingly, wrong (*coughcoughReigncoughcough), but I have to say that my favorite part of consuming this type of media is finding out what is accurate and what is not in any given portrayal. It's a fun way for me to direct my ADD and learn at the same time. I've found numerous historical costuming blogs, but many do not cite sources and are therefore unreliable.

I know that I could probably ask questions here and receive detailed and informed answers, but I feel that I would be doing so often enough that it would quickly become tiresome for the contributors of this sub. So, anyone know of any blogs that tackle this sort of thing?

Does the name jacquest have any significant historical importance in france from the 1700's to the early 1900's?

So my friend acquired a big box of old photographs, books, and notebooks all containing some perculiur notes in an estate sale. A few of the notes were hinting towards some great importance in that bloodline and I'm wondering if anyone has heard of. This family might even have owned a castle at one point. The notes cut out after the note taker writes that he's thinking about going on an expedition to France to find more documentation. Any help at all would be deeply appreciated :)

How did Nazi Germany reconcile the Holocaust with the teachings of Christianity?

I'm assuming here that Nazi Germany, like most of Europe during the '40s and now, was a Christian nation. I'm actually watching Schindler's List right now, and the church scene got me thinking. How did the Nazi regime reconcile the actions of the Holocaust, the brutal treatment of the Jews, homosexuals, Romanian gypsies, etc., with Jesus Christ's teachings to love each other as yourself, etc?

what was the Caloric value of the average ancient Roman diet?

Looking back to the time of the ancient Romans, I imagine their society was much more active on average than that of today's society in the U.S. since advances in technology have made our lives much more sedentary, and the need for jobs consisting of manual labor is presumably much lower. That said, do we know anything about how much food they'd consume daily in order to keep up with their more active lifestyle? I'm interested in seeing how much it differs to what we consider "normal" by today's standards

Why does the Greek writing of Logos look so much like havoc?

I was looking through etymologies of ancient Greek words and stumbled upon logos, the idea of logic. Thinking about the word further it's supposed to mean order and reason but this writing of it I found on the Wikipedia page looks a lot like the English word "havoc" just spelled with an o instead of an a. Is there any correlation between these words? Could one be the father of the other or is this all just completely incidental? Beautiful and meaningful language I'm just trying to learn all I can about it for fun.

Recommended historical fiction for young adults?

I'm about to begin tutoring a 10th grader in world history, and one of the things I'd like to do is assign her a good historical fiction novel. A well-done story, set in the midst of historical events, is an effective way to spark interest in the events, and leads to a deeper appreciation of history in general; it seems like a good angle to try.

But there's a lot of bad writing out there, so I was hoping there might be a few parents of teenage readers (or maybe even a few YA historical fiction writers!) out there who could make a recommendation or two--what are some great historical fiction books, with an accessible style and themes young adults would appreciate?

How Christianised was Britannia circa 400AD?

I know there were Christians in Britannia, and that by 400 it was the state religion, but how many people were actually practicing Christians, and how many were still (Hellenic, I assume) Pagans?

By Britannia I mean the Roman province specifically, not the isle of Great Britain (though if anyone does know about the religions of the Picts I'd be interested!).
