What are some examples of a military operation where the goal was to delay the enemy forces while in a pre-planned defensive posture?

Like the title states, I was just hoping there were some more modern examples of this. Preferably not too much earlier than Napoleon.

I'm interested in learning more about the history of Japan

Hello /r/AskHistorians I read through the submission rules and didn't see anything expressly forbidding this I thought I'd give it a shot, and considering there doesn't seem to be an easily accessible dedicated Asian/Japanese subreddit, this seemed like the best place.

I'm currently really itching to learn more about Japan, but I'm having a hard time getting started. In the last week I've picked up copies of Japan: From Prehistory to Modern Times by John W. Hall, and Everyday Line in Traditional Japan. I also got a few works of historical fiction including Shogun by James Clavell (reread), The Heike Story and Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa and Silence by Shusaku Endo. I'm looking forward to reading these but as I have been working through Japan I'm finding myself really curious to read detailed histories on the lives of certain figures, like Oda Nobunaga, or perhaps of specific time periods, for instance the Yoshimitsu shogunate.

Could anyone please recommend some further reading?

*Apologies if this breaks any post rules

Did the Rosicrucians exist?

A quick Google search gives a lot of websites that talk about the Rosicrucians and their ideals. However, they don't provide any evidence for their claims. I can't seem to find any proof of the existence of a group or order of people that called themselves "Rosicrucians". Did they really exist?

How would a paramilitary group in the Weimar Republic acquire weapons to arm themselves?

I heard on Dan Carlins Hardcore History podcast (I know not always a popular source in this sub) that although the German professional military was stripped to a skeletal force of 100,000 that paramilitary groups of all shapes and sizes would be able to take arms. How would they go about acquiring weapons? Black market deals? Personal armories? Raids?

Thank you and I hope I was specific enough!

Why was the "American Experiment" more successful then the "USSR Experiment"?

After the war of Independence the USA slowly became a global super power and still is to this day. However while the USSR did become a super power it's rise and fall happened quite rapidly. What major differences outside of Communisiusm and Capitalism caused the big difference in success?

Pretty much all the famous composers in the 1700-1850 time frame came from German and Italian speaking areas. Why?

I have a feeling that it has to do with patronage, but I really don't know.

And if sure there are lots of composers from that time frame from France, UK, etc. that aren't famous, why not? Is it because more recent efforts have emphasized Italian and German speaking composers? Or is it because the other composers wrote music that wasn't much good?

History from the Perspective on Race Struggle

I always hear about great man theory and class struggle as ways to describe the progression of history, but I was wondering if anyone had an interesting book or idea on history from the perspective of race struggle; I believe that would give great insight into the race struggle today in the U.S. and throughout the world. Thanks!

Is there anything in Japanese since 1500 CE that can be debated about besides the use of the atomic bomb?

I have to do a history project on a topic in world history since 1500 CE. The requirments are that the topic must be debatable, with evidence to back up the claims, and not from American History. I would love to do my project on some area of Japenese history particularly the Warring States period if possible, but I don't know enough about Japan's history to know if I should look elsewhere for my topic. Any suggestions would be welcome.

What did rōnin do most likely after their master died during Sengoku Jidai?

Did they find a new one, retire, become monks, merchants, follow their masters to death etc. And why? Was there any major deciding facts, or was the choice even theirs? Did the lords have some kind of agreement with them, that if they die, they'll commit seppuku to follow? Really interested if there was any rules or agreements between the two regarding this situation.

Why has Europe, historically, imported all of its seasonings and spices from overseas? What about native European spices (and herbs) made them lackluster compared to foreign ingredients?

As an aside, is the dichotomy between a spice and herb due to cultural bias? I don't think of the Tarragon I put in my chicken to be a spice, but I do associate it with France, while I acknowledge the cumin in my curry to be a spice and distinctly Indian.

How has the general floor plan of the American home changed over the past 250 years?

When I tour historic homes I hear about kitchens being kept outside of the main house, or certain entrances being used by different members of society.

When I shop for a home today I see how houses built in the 50's typically don't have a large family room open to the kitchen, but homes built today always do.

Can you provide a basic overview laying out the changes that have occurred, and the underlying causes behind those changes?

Thank you for any answers!

edit: if this topic is too broad, we can limit our scope to upper-middle class urban and suburban homes, since that is the American dream that the majority of us might aspire to.

Early Spanish & English Colonisation in the Americas (1500-1700): How different were these models? Why?

Just an interesting topic I am getting primary source materials on regarding their settlement. Any good reads (primary or secondary materials are welcome).

I am comparing the Spanish and English model of empire in the Americas and how far these were different / similar to other European empire states (Portugal, France etc). > to what extent did they compete and establish a strong base for future growth.

Why were they different?

I am looking for interesting insights or thoughtful/ innovative points so please post what you think but try to support it with sources!

Materials I've already read: Alan Taylor's American Colonies & Canny's History of the British Empire. A lot of stuff on economy & early settlements too

Thank you in advanced! Please share views / points.

Native Tribes Of Maine?

Hi, I grew up in southern Maine, and have heard stories over the years of the Native American tribes around the region, such as the story of a man named Frye who jumped off what is now known as "Frye's Leap" into Sebago Lake to escape local natives who were chasing him. "The Curse of the Saco River" a local legend that, in short, British Soldiers in the 17th or 18th century threw a Native baby into the Saco River and the river was then cursed by the tribe's chief that 5 white men would die a year in the river...A letter I found to the Governor of then Massachusetts asking for help in defending the town of Limington from the Native Americans that sounded extremely fearful and desperate...And recently I came across something about "The Red Paint People"...which sounded the most intriguing of all.

Anyway, my questions are; Can any of you elaborate on any of these legends, confirm or deny their truthfulness, or give me any unique or interesting facts about the tribes of Maine?

I am also specifically interested in the Tribes that lived around Sebago Lake and on the Saco River, specifically in the Standish, Steep Falls, (or general western Cumberland County Area)...Basically what is known about these Tribes and is there any unique or interesting history?

My family has had a camp on Sebago Lake since the 1920's and for a long time out front of the camp there was a sign with a word that I'm told was in the local Native dialect, "Hakanaki". Does anyone know what this means?

Thanks!

Was Native American life as egalitarian as Howard Zinn claims in his book, A People's History of the United States?

In his book, A People's History of the United States, Howard Zinn claims that the Iroquis people of the 16th and 17th centuries were rather egalitarian, feminist, and progressive. How factual is this claim? What are some good, yet accessible, sources for information about the Iroquis people in this time period?
