I'm pretty sure it was a Pre-Columbian civilization, living either in Colombia or Brazil, conquered and/or enslaved by the Incas. I recall reading that they didn't believe in any form of violence, and preferred being wiped out completely (or enslaved) than to fight back.
It's possible I'm remembering wrong. I've read that enslaving and annihilating conquered civilizations was not the Inca Empire's policy, and I've read about the Moriori genocide, that resembles some of the description I gave. Still, I don't think it's them, and I have a feeling there was a South American civilization that had something similar happen to them.
Thanks.

Nowadays we have the internet, photographs, TV, and other media to show us what famous political and otherwise "famous people" look like but back in the Middle Ages, Ancient times etc when they did not have that.
Were people able to recognize famous persons in public and private from names and whatnot?

By plate carrier armor, I mean bullet resistant steel (or other materials) plates being inserted into something that can carry the plates. Was it just not practical, too expensive? Was the tech just not there yet?

It seems like they would only be around as long as clocks or an extremely precise method of keeping time.

On a somewhat similar question, did the German language spoken in West Germany grow to differ from that spoken in East Germany until reunification?

People seem to discredit a lot of what Edison did, and say he just ripped off of Nikola Tesla and many others. From what we know, how true is all of this? And was Nikola Tesla truly as far ahead of his time as people say he is, or is it all hyperbole?

The Nazis clearly knew they had been very naughty or they wouldn't have taken efforts at the end of the war to cover up and hide things and run away. What were they hoping to achieve by allowing photographers and cameramen to record actual mass executions and the like?

My conception is that for a long time immigrating to the US simply meant showing up. And I guess not being obviously dying of cholera.
I know that even before Ellis Island there were immigration processing stations but where there ever any checks on a person's background? Were immigrants required to enter at these stations or could they just get on any boat bound for the US?

Given the ability of the of the United State's military, why was the evacuation of the capital allowed to fall so deeply into chaos? Was it considered a tactical failure, were their any reprimands for the commanders in charge?

In his famous speech in Zurich on creating a 'united states of Europe' in which he mentioned that Britain, the soviet union, the common wealth, would be sponsors of a unified Europe. He didn't really imply that Britain would be a full member, but suggested that France and German should form a council of Europe. What were his reasons at the time for not wanting Britain to be a fully integrated member?

Is it true that JFK was not informed about the existence of U.S. nuclear missiles in Turkey? And that he only learned about this from his generals when the Cuban missile crisis unfolded? Someone once told me that this became known through the Kennedy Tapes.
I am curious whether there were any situations in the past where the military or secret services withheld information from the POTUS.

So obviously, Visigoths didn't turn into Castillians, Leonese, Asturians, etc. overnight, and it survived for a while in the Kingdom of Asturias and the Marca Hispanica after the Umayyad conquest of Hispania.
So when, and in what way, did Visigoths stop referring to themselves as Goths and develop their own Iberian identity?

I recently found some translated chapters of the Praecepta Militaria, by Nikephoros II Phokas. In the third chapter, "On the Kataphraktoi" the author says:
"The kataphraktoi should have the following weapons: iron maces with all-iron heads – the heads must have sharp corners and be three-cornered, four-cornered, or six-cornered – or else other iron maces or sabers." [...] "All of them must have swords. They should hold their iron maces and sabers in their hands and have other iron maces either on their belts or saddles."
The translator suggest that these maces would be thrown during the charge to break up the ranks of defending infantry. Here is the full translation of that chapter (in the next post he talks about the throwing maces): https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/spacebattles-reads-the-praecepta-militaria-by-nikephoros-ii-phokas-white-death-of-the-saracens.230390/#post-8299364
Is there any historical consensus of this matter? i've never heard of this before but it sounds fascinating! how widespread would this tactic be and in what in what time frame would these throwing maces be used? in particular would have they been used against the earlier sassanids and the later turks?

Here is a photograph of the Declaration of Independence copy that I'm referencing. I'm wondering how people hand-wrote documents such as these with such precision.
