In the past, when an American-born person becomes head of state or head of government in a different country, has there been a determination as to whether that person retains or loses US citizenship?

I am thinking of cases such as Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, Irish leader Eamon de Valera, and Guyanese leader Janet Jagan - but I suppose the question applies just as much to cases such as Grace Kelly and Queen Noor.

Edit: did Bhumibol Adulyadej have U.S. citizenship in the first place?

Was Max, the legendary Russian World War II spy, a real person?

Hey guys, I'm reading this book about the Second World War called The Secret War by Francis Russell. It's part of a series from the war published by Time-Life. This book talks about espionage from the war and gives details about a lot of interesting spies like Juan Pujol Garcia (Garbo) and Elyesa Bazna (Cicero).

One of the most intriguing people in the book is known only as Max, a Russian who spied for the Germans and provided info that suggested he had access to the Kremlin's top levels. Now I can find info about Cicero and Garbo from the net, but there's nothing about this guy Max. The book mentions that some Germans became suspicious of him after a while and even investigated his handler, guy called Fritz Kauders. But there's scant info on either Max or Kauders online. I have seen some tidbits suggesting that Fritz Kauders was not the handler's real name and that he was a Jew. So I have some questions about all this:

  1. Was Max real? If not, where was the information coming from?

  2. Who was Fritz Kauders really? And was he working for or against the Germans?

  3. If Max was in fact a real person, do we have any idea who he was or have we come any closer to knowing (the books i'm reading are a bit old)?

  4. Lastly, a bit of a side question. Are these Time-Life books any credible on the war, for those who know about them.

Thank you all in advance

Dissertation Idea; Is it plausible?

I am currently starting the dissertation process and I need to think of a possible topic. I am interested in modern history (specifically the 20th century). I also love cosmetics and I am currently looking at a dissertation topic which researches the role of red lipstick in WWII in the US. I would look at pin-up girls, how red lipstick increased morale, how red lipstick strengthened working women, patriotic advertising campaigns and magazines. Do you think this sounds like a plausible idea with enough historical discussion to please the markers?

In America, did slave-owners attempt to breed their slaves in a way that selected for better physical traits?

This is a sentiment I've heard from some people. Their argument is that the perceived athletic superiority of African-Americans is due to slave-owners breeding slaves to be stronger for field work. They also use this to explain the perception that African-Americans appear more physically fit than native West Africans. Is there any truth to that? Did slave breeding even exist to a large degree?

What evidence is there for a 'germany' pre 1871?

I've seen historical blogs and articles refer to the holy roman empire as 'the german state', despite it also being the residence of czechs and austrians, and dutch for awhile (when you view it with a modern lens). To me, it seems more like it was the 'austrian state', since the dynasty that it was dissolved under went on to rule austria for another 100 years.

Anyway, the only justifications I've seen for reference to germany are to do with:

  1. How romans referred to hundreds of different tribes for the sake of probable convenience.

  2. The use of the title 'king of the germans' by the pope, who probably got that idea from the romans, intending 'german' to mean 'barbarian' or 'uncivilized'. Hence, a derogatory title.

  3. Term for the language group 'germanic'.

  4. The dutch referred to themselves as 'german' at one point. I have no clue how that trend might have started. I don't think they were instincitvely instilled with that identity at birth (to argue such would be like saying nationalism existed since the stone ages). The same goes for 'teutonic knights' and other such names for various groups within society.

I'm looking for more information on this photo of the Hindenburg Explosion that my great-grandfather kept

Hello, I recently found a large newspaper clipping of a photo of the Hindenburg mid-explosion and I am looking for more information on it. I have done some research and it appears to be a relatively common photograph, however I would love to find out the original photographer or the institution holding the original print. Here is the photo I found: http://imgur.com/a/ALJIY and here is the Wikimedia page for it: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hindenburg_burning.jpg

How did the maxim gun function when it was developed in the age of black powder?

I heard that black powder would more easily foul barrels. The maxim was the first 'practical' machine gun, so what measures had to be taken for the faults of black powder?

Book Recommendation for WW1

Like many others, I've been playing a lot of battlefield 1 recently and it's made me curious enough to want to read more about the war. I looked through the book list in the sidebar and found another post asking the same question, but when I looked through those books on amazon, it seemed that most of them were focused on the British perspective, or at least the Western Front. I'm actually far more curious about the war in the Balkans, the war on the eastern front, and the ottoman participation in the war. Are there any books that focus on these seemingly lesser known parts of the war? Preferably, I'd also like to know more about those parts of the world leading up to the war, and how the war changed them. It seems like WWI almost had a larger impact on the world than wwii did in some ways, and I never would have guessed that.

Is it true that Africans enslaved other Africans in the 1600-1700s? Were there certain classes that could be slaves or was it just whoever can be captured?

I'm specifically talking about slaves that would be later sold to Europeans, not European slaves in Algeria or slaves in Islamic caliphates.

About lost cities

So do you guys think some of the "lost cities" like: Atlantis, Ubar, or the 7 cities of gold in America, have some sort of historical inspiration? i love too much myths, and things like lost lands, are my favourite subject to study. As almost in every lie there is some truth, i do believe that every myth is inspired in something real.

The Role of Allah in Pre-Islamic Arabia

I've read in a few places that the concept of Allah existed prior to Muhammed. Was Allah one of many gods worshiped in pre-Islamic Arabia and, if so, what was his role in the pre-Islamic pantheon and why was this god elevated to a monotheistic level over all the others?

Why did British colonists view miscegenation with natives so much more negatively than Portuguese colonists did?

The /r/AskHistorians podcast episode (#50, the first one on Zimbabwe) mentions that in southern Africa, the Portuguese approved of--and even encouraged--interracial marriage because it would promote stability. The British took a very different attitude, which eventually grew into full apartheid.

But surely the British wanted stability too. So what explains the different attitudes toward racial mixing?

August Willich, prominent German communist, was commissioned as a Union officer during the American Civil War. How was foreign radical appointed to this position and what kind of reaction did this cause?

I learned about Willich from leftist commentator Matt Christman, but would love to know more. Though Willich had a wildly interesting career fighting in civil wars on two continents, there doesn't seem to have been much research into his life.

Why is Liechtenstein?

Liechtenstein is 62 Mi^2 with a population of about 37,000. It's been under the imperial umbrella of several different empires for hundreds of years, but has always been able to maintain its' relative sovereignty. How did such a tiny nation not become totally absorbed and assimilated into the fold of a larger nation I've read the Wiki articles and still haven't gotten the answer I'm looking for.

Thanks!
