My Geology professor made the claim that the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake was the "cause"" of the European Age of Enlightenment. Is this true?

It seemed to be an exaggeration in context, but he did support his claim, as the deaths of many Christians in churches on a Sunday made people reject spiritual explanations for the event and start seeking naturalistic ones.

Was there anything in the premodern era (esp. Medieval European) that resembled the fantasy trope of "adventurers?"

By "adventurers," I essentially mean "freelancers who accept dangerous contracts such as driving off bandits/wildlife, pursuing criminals, retrieving lost or stolen goods, escort travelers/explorers, etc." Essentially small-scale mercenaries. In some versions of the trope, adventurers are organized into guilds, which will connect adventurers with clients (presumably for a share of the reward). Sometimes, these guilds also encourage high-quality adventurers through ranking, training, regulations, etc.

Did anything like this exist in your period of expertise?

Does anybody know anything about this WW1 Uniform?

My sister is doing her family history project, and we're trying to find out any information we can on our Great Grandfather, very little is known about him (we don't know his parents, only that his father was a German soldier) and these are about the only pictures we have of him. We were wondering if anyone had any knowledge about his WWI uniform. We know he was born in Belgium and are assuming these are Belgian outfits but just wondering if anyone could confirm or give knowledge on the outfit:

- What army did he serve for?

- Would also like to know what the ribbons/patches on the arms of his outfit are if anybody knows.

Pictures of him in his uniform - https://imgur.com/a/D9572x1 (Not sure if the last pic is him or a relative)

Thanks for any help!

How much power did Robert Morris have over the US during and after the revolution?

I went on a historic house tour and was interested by a comment that the financier Robert Morris held near total power over certain aspects of American government during the revolution. I got the impression the tour guide was trying to hype things up a bit, but I really don’t know much about how decisions were made during the revolution so I suppose he could have had a lot of say.

Are there any books or resources that would help me understand the us government at this time?

Languages seem to have been much more complex centuries ago than they are now. How did they get so complex in the first place? Did they start complex?

For instance, czech used to have a dual number which is completely gone by now. English has a widely reduced inflection and conjugation compared to even early modern English, with only pronouns and a few verbs to show.

Admittedly this question would probably be more suited for a linguistics subreddit, but I'm still curious as to how complex the grammar of languages like proto-indo-European was

Is there evidence that Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were in a romantic relationship with each other?

Engels' devotion to Marx seems extreme, even for a close friend. Engels not only financially supported Marx throughout much of his life, but also went to a lot of trouble to edit and publish Marx's works after his death with no recompense. There is some evidence from Marx's letters that Engels even went so far as to claim an illegitimate child of Marx's was his own child to spare Marx any negative public perception and financial burden.

While it is certainly possible that Engels simply felt extreme friendship and closeness with Marx and it went no further than that, there is no evidence that Engels did this sort of thing -- certainly not to this extreme -- with his other friends and comrades in the communist movement.

Is there any evidence in the historical record, or in Engels and Marx's letters or the like, that Marx and Engels had a romantic or sexual relationship at any time, or at least that Engels had unrequited romantic feelings for Marx?

How did the Assyrians get the reputation of being cruel?

From what little I know of, the other kingdoms of their time seemed just as vicious as they were, but how did they become marked in history as particularly evil? Were they even a little more cruel than the others, or when and how in history did they gain this fame?

Did Vladímir Putin have a special role during the Collapse of the Soviet Union? How significant was he at that time in government and in events? Why was HE chosen by Yeltsin to be his successor?

I know Vladímir Putin was part of the KGB and he served in Dresden Germany as a KGB agent. The KGB kind of organized a coup against the government of the USSR.

I read somewhere he was in charge of moving a lot of money (and he got rich by doing so)

This doesn’t break the 20 year rule because I’m asking something related to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

I realize the length of time between events was significant - were there any individuals involved in the Jacobite rebellion (on the Jacobite side) that were involved in the American revolution (on either side, but more so the colonial side)?

The US lowered the federal voting age to 18 in 1971 (around the same time as many Western countries), with most states eventually responding by lowering the age of majority to 18. Why wasn't there a similar trend with the legal drinking age, as occurred in most other Western countries?

After WW2 Mexico was the goto place for political refugees. Trotsky, Fidel Castro, and the Shah of Iran are just a few notable examples. What was it about Mexico at that time that drew all those people there?

It seems that for a long time if you were persecuted in your country for political reasons, then Mexico was the place to go

I would like to understand what combination of factors led to this situation

What was the fur trade like in Europe? Were there for trappers like in North America? In medieval times?

Interested in hearing more about fur trappers and hunters in medieval Europe up to 1600s. I haven’t been able to find much online about it.

We’re there fur trappers in medieval England and France like there was in North America in the 1600-1800s?

I’ve seen that there were trappers in Russia and Siberia. And that Europeans would trade for furs. But what about folks actually making a living as fur trappers during this time?

Did they actually use traps or more bows and muskets? Was the primary quarry sable, hares, and harts? Or were there others?

We’re the primary buyers tailors or royalty?

Whats the actual possibility that there are still classic epic poems preserved but uncovered?

Is the general answer a simple "we don't know", or "we have no idea", or is there any reason to believe specific places, like a hypothetical specific unexcavated archaeological site might have one but we don't have the means to excavate them yet? (perhaps because some city was built on top of an older library that may contain important writings, and so we can't excavate, etc...)
