How popular of a President was Dwight D Eisenhower? Why did Republicans lose power during his term of office?

I guess I always heard Eisenhower was a good president from people of both parties so I was kind of surprised when I read this article ( http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2016/11/17/republican_party_the_strongest_its_been_in_80_years.html ) which showed replublicans lost a lot of power while he was in office.

I'm Christopher Barker, the Queen's Printer. Where do my printjobs go, and who reads them?

Christopher Barker (and Richard Jugge before him) put out a lot of edicts that start with "By the Queenes Commaundement" and touch on all sorts of things, particularly public health measures around preventing the plague.

In 1578, for instance, Barker's press puts out Orders thought meete, which lists a bunch of orders for city administrators, then a bunch of plague remedies for physicians. Would the poorer people ever see these Orders, or would they rely on city officials and physicians to disseminate the information?

During the outbreak of 1592-3, multiple documents are printed on restricting access to the court, or adjourning the legal term and moving the court away from London due to widespread contagion. In this example, where would this document be posted? Would there be checkpoints two miles outside the court with a copy of this? Would churches or marketplaces display them? Or are they explicitly for city administrators, who then pass the information down to the people?

If they were posted someplace, the big question is: could everyone read the document? Or would they require the use of someone to explain it to them?

Can anyone place this "souvenir" in the proper historical context?

This is a picture of the item in question

I recently found a souvenir "handkerchief" with 10 flags on it, accompanied by a quote attributed to Hans Christian Andersen - "There is always a clinging to the land of one’s birth." There is a copyright mark on it indicating 1901 and it supposedly belonged to a WWI vet. For the life of me, I can't place this article in the proper historical context. What is the significance of these particular flags appearing together here? The flags appear to be specific, in some cases, to naval/maritime usage and are:

  • Britain
  • France
  • Italy
  • Spain
  • Ireland
  • Russia
  • Sweden
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • United States

If this isn't the right subreddit, I apologize in advance.

Is it true that public bathhouses in 13th century England were often connected to bakeries and used the heat from the ovens to keep the water warm?

I've read this on a history blog as a random factoid and I wonder what sources support this and what was the culture of medieval English bathhouses like?

During WWII, a number of Hollywood celebrities like Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart served in the military. How were they treated by the command staff and how were they viewed by fellow soldiers?

Side question I guess is whether they were treated differently than other very rich people.

By the time of Constantine I, how "Roman" was North Africa?

Was the upper class of the African provinces ethnically Roman, or did they allow local leaders to become magistrates and such? How much intermingling was there between Romans who settled in Africa and the local populations? Did the majority of people retain their Berber culture almost entirely, or would they have worn Roman clothes and eaten Roman food?

In other words, did Africans "feel" Roman or did they always see Rome as a tyrannical foreign invader whose yoke was to be thrown off, like the Jews saw them?

How effective was the M1 helmet in WW2 against bullets, and explosive fragment? Did regulation require the helmet to be worn at all time or was it a personal decision?

Of course war movies are worthless in terms of military history, but I noticed during such classics as Saving Private Ryan that some soldiers (major stars) took off as often as possible.

How was Hitler's ascension to Chancellor treated by his opponents? Did they think he was an existential threat to Germany? Or was there a sense of "well we live in a democracy and he won, so let's act civil, give him the benefit of the doubt, and try to understand his followers' point of view"?

Were there instances of Christian terrorism in the Roman Empire?

I was recently reading Marcus Aurelius Antoninus and his position on the Christian problem, and in some ways it struck me that the guarded position of the state at that time is possibly not too different from how states today view Islamic minorities in the West - as potential sources of trouble.

This led me to wonder if there were any Christian (Christianist? Christian fundamentalist?) groups which engaged in violence against the Roman Empire and its citizens to gain political concessions. Were there Christian terrorists at that time? Did people sympathise with them? Would you be labelled a Christianophobe for fearing the rise of Christianity?

Cheers for any insights!

Andalusia, Baghdad, and maybe Damascus as Islamic centers of scientific advancement why never Makkah or Madinah ? (Serious)

Throughout the history of Islamic scientific advancements of old there were cities that were the center of that advancement. What is shared between these cities is that they were outside of the Arabian Peninsula. Why hasn't Makkah or Madinah, the two holiest cities in Islam, become that center? A minority of the scholars that lead the scientific research else where were from the Arabian peninsula but it never happened in the peninsula itself . Anyone has an idea why is that the case ?

What evidence is there, if any, that slave holders in America selected for certain physical/behavioral traits in their slaves?

It's horrifying, but slave owners had it within their power to select for slaves that are more obedient, docile, and physically fit. I would imagine that at least some of them would do it. And by 'select for traits' I don't just mean selective breeding, it could also be killing of slaves with undesirable traits which would also have a selecting effect. If they did select for any type of traits, is it possible that we can see evidence of their eugenics practices in modern populations?
