Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Is there any other history of the travel of the original document? I know that Monroe Madison saved it from being burned during the war of 1812, and it went around the United States in the 1970s.
Edit: in trying to find an answer for this, I found this Wikipedia page, which is very relevant and useful.

Hi my story for NaNoWriMo features victorian prostitution and I'm finding conflictiing evidence about birth control and if it was widely used in the 1880s in London. Were the condoms of the time mass used? Were they inexpensive enough for prostitutes to use at all? (obviously not at all times). Were there other types of birth control that sex workers used in those times. Also would be helpful to find ways of terminating pregnancy in that time period
Thanks

Whenver I read about Napoleon entering Moscow, it always feels like a dramatic entry where he found everything burning/abandoned. Now I have the feeling that the logistics of setting such a large city ablaze, as well as evacuating its population was a huge ordeal. So who organized all of this? How? Where did the population go and how did they survive the occupation?

I find it an interesting question because the Nazis (at first) did win the elections. Was the general German public aware of the Holocaust, or was it largely done in secret? And by "in secret" I mean not advertised and shown to the general population within Germany.
How aware were the Nazi voters and supporters of just how brutal their government was?

Nazi Germany's Manstein Plan seems extraordinarily similar to the WW1 Schlieffen Plan (at least the invasion through Belgium/Luxembourg part). And if France had the foresight to build the Maginot Line then why was their northern borders left undefended considering what happened in WW1?
Excuse any gross mistakes I have made, I have only just started looking into this so i might have missed something obvious.

Many year ago I read a novel set, I believe, during either the first or Second World War on a German submarine. I can't remember many details about it but one thing that has stuck in my mind is that the crew of the boat had sharpened their thumbnails and carved serrations in them so they could be used in fights amongst themselves and when in brawls on shore. Was this ever a real thing or was it purely an invention?

Sorry, I don't know the name of the particular hat, but peaked at two ends, worn at about 20 degrees off centre.
Additionally, as a presumptious follow up - are there any other quirks of uniform in any country's service that have interesting back stories?

To clarify, I am asking about the effect that various companies and the access to trade and resources, had in helping the monarchs of Europe in the 17th century in centralizing the states.
To give two clear examples of what I am talking about:
The sound toll in Denmark, which gave the King (and only the King) a major sources of income.
The Spanish silver import from America.

We know that the during the Bronze Age many Mediterranean civilizations collapsed. These collapses were somewhat concurrent (to my understanding) with natural disaster and the rise of the "sea people's". What is the current state of our understanding of this event? As a follow up- My classics teacher once informed us that writers in the following centuries attributed the construction of great structures (in this case Minoan buildings) to mythological beings such as Cyclops. Is there any truth in this?

If the phrase was first mentioned (or invented) by J.J Rousseau way before she was even in France, how come this particular phrase is so strongly thought of as being spoken by her? The conotations are, of course, clear and since there was no shortage of sources for twisting facts into bad PR for her, I can very much imagine why it happened. However, I'm wondering if we have any reasonable clue as to what was the journey of that phrase into her historical mouth.

Did people in Siberia/Asia back then know that there was another continent across the land bridge? Some people must have made multiple trips right?
What evidence do we have if any?

I grew up wearing thongs to the beach, now I wear flip-flops to the beach. What happened? Where did these terms come from?

Disclaimer: I'm not intending for this to be a catalyst for drama or whatever in this subreddit.
It seems like in their effort to establish a system of checks and balances, the founding fathers might have anticipated that a two-party-"opposite"-philosophy type of situation might occur and divide Americans.
Did they have any thoughts about this? Did they leave us any advice?
Have leaders of other countries made remarks about their two-party or multi-party election systems?
Thanks to whomever responds!

We're talking northern english fells, more-or-less cut off culturally from the south or even from nearby cities, almost entirely reliant on fell-farming and a bit of crop-farming. Would girls and women have worn anything to support their breasts, particularly as they were (and still are) often required to walk great distances over rocky terrain? I would imagine brassieres would be pretty much out of the question, but would they have worn some kind of linen binding or something, or just gone completely without? For a script. Thanks :)

Did they ever see any action? Were they ever used as shortcuts to supply Russia from The United Kingdom or something similar?

I'm thinking about doing a master's and considering subjects; it seemed great to do something related to the Vikings. I already speak French but I'd like to know what else I need to learn in the next year and a half to get ready. If you can point out "gaps in the literature" that might provide leads for research projects, I'd really appreciate it too.
