Can anyone link me to stories(if there are any) of ethnic minorities serving in the British Army (in Europe) during WW2?
I know of many ethnic minorities that served in the RAF during WW2 and I know there were some Black and Indian officers that served in the Far East or Africa with the British Army. I also know there were quite a few Chinese Canadian officers with the Commonwealth forces in Europe as well. But are there any accounts of ethnic minorities in the British Army in Europe during WW2?
Was there like a colour bar in the British Army?

Hello everyone. I am an European with very basic knowledge of American History, although it does interest me. Due to Hamilton's success, I've recently read Chernow's books on Washington and Hamilton and watched the Turn and John Adams show. Now, I would like to learn about the Civil War. Are there good books about Lincoln, in a similar style of Washington: A life? I've found A. Lincoln: A Biography by Ronald C. White on Amazon, it appears to be one of the bes sellers. Any other recommendations? Grant, Lee...? Anything about the war itself? (More in a sense of why and how and the aftermath than about the battles)
Thank you very much!

I saw in a comment in a thread that briefly mentioned that soldiers wouldn't follow doctrine as tank destroyers. Can someone elaborate? I felt like this might be better answered in its own thread.

Hi!
In my school Latin and Classics education, I was taught that the Caledonian chieftain Calgacus was an invention of Tacitus, either completely (ie, he never existed) or in part (his famous speech). What is the evidence Tacitus made him up?
His speech, from Agricola 30:
Whenever I consider the origin of this war and the necessities of our position, I have a sure confidence that this day, and this union of yours, will be the beginning of freedom to the whole of Britain. To all of us slavery is a thing unknown; there are no lands beyond us, and even the sea is not safe, menaced as we are by a Roman fleet. And thus in war and battle, in which the brave find glory, even the coward will find safety. Former contests, in which, with varying fortune, the Romans were resisted, still left in us a last hope of succour, inasmuch as being the most renowned nation of Britain, dwelling in the very heart of the country, and out of sight of the shores of the conquered, we could keep even our eyes unpolluted by the contagion of slavery. To us who dwell on the uttermost confines of the earth and of freedom, this remote sanctuary of Britain's glory has up to this time been a defence. Now, however, the furthest limits of Britain are thrown open, and the unknown always passes for the marvellous. But there are no tribes beyond us, nothing indeed but waves and rocks, and the yet more terrible Romans, from whose oppression escape is vainly sought by obedience and submission. Robbers of the world, having by their universal plunder exhausted the land, they rifle the deep. If the enemy be rich, they are rapacious; if he be poor, they lust for dominion; neither the east nor the west has been able to satisfy them. Alone among men they covet with equal eagerness poverty and riches. To robbery, slaughter, plunder, they give the lying name of empire; they make a solitude and call it peace

Also how did people get food and shelter when they crossed it? Were there animals? How long did the crossing take?

Title pretty much says it all, but I'll expand further. Was there widespread uproar among the Mexican population? Or did the average person not really care that much? Did it cause any kind of upswell of nationalism or irredentism? If so, when did it die out? I don't get the impression that the average Mexican today is hot to annex the southwest US back into Mexico.

Long after the Classical period, when the Greeks began settling Egypt and Persia, Rome was suffering constant disease outbreaks and its population was sustained only by immigration. So why didn't the Romans create civilian/trade colonies along with their military colonies?

Every time there is an electoral race there it's a major head ache for the rest of the world just as much as for the Americans which kinda makes you think what the entire fuss is about and why they don't let both of them be president if they want it so much.
Has that issue ever been raised in America?

This came up during a class today and apparently it is true. Is there any actual information on this?

It seems to me that while Caligula was as hedonistic and power hungry as the other emperors, he mostly get's the bad rap because he was specifically hostile to the Senate.

I recently read this Q&A here and wondered, if the Catholics hadn't been passed over to find the next heir, who would have been the next rightful heir after Queen Anne of Stuart?

I'm thinking back to the color coded alerts right after 9/11 and how they eventually faded. Was there a similar feeling as the war went on but no attacks came?

I'm currently reading one of Heidegger's works and in the introduction the author (Alessandro Galvan) seems to imply that the german philosopher was at first a supporter of nazism but later started to oppose it. What is the truth? Why did Heidegger support nazism? Why and when did he stop?
Bonus question (I'm not sure this is the right place to ask): what parts of Heidegger's thought can be linked with nazi doctrine?

I've only ever heard of African American activists and their involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, etc. Were there any other prominent figures representing other minorities in this time, or were they not as involved as the African American population?

Hey all,
Does anyone know any great websites that can offer at least some insight to surnames and their origins. I usually hit dead end at these horrible sites that offer to send you family crests and printed mugs...
I'm probably asking about something that exists in the perfect world, but as a South African -really trying to dig up my family tree with all the surnames and find their origin is quite frustrating.
Though with some bravery in the coming Months I will make a dreaded trip to the archives to help myself, but there has to be something online that can at least help somewhat.
Anyone know?
