I've been reading a book about the Holy Roman Empire in the 15th to 17th century and a recurring topic I find is Hector of Troy. Maximilian the first idolized him and even said Hector was his ancestor, there is also a painting of him called the three heroes which is of Hector, Alexander and Caesar. My point is, if Achilles is the hero of the Illiad, how come people praised Hector more? Was it something of the society back then, or am I overthinking all of this?

I've been reading a lot of material on the colonization of the New World by the Europeans from the 15th to 18th century. I've always heard about the Greeks, Phoenicians and Carthaginians colonizing the Western Mediterranean prior to the rise of Rome. In particular, I wanted to know how or any materials on the colonization of southern Iberia by the Carthaginians; and if it was anything similar to the colonization of the Americas by the English, Spanish, Dutch, and French during the Age of Exploration

I have read a few books about the Rwanda and came away with a mostly favorable impression of Paul Kagame. I have seen elsewhere that he has some committed some human rights violations, especially in regards to the Congo. My question is in general what is the current viewpoint on Paul Kagame and why?

I know those who argue that indigenous histories (and would apply this applies also to non-western histories to some degree) cannot be done using western historical methods and thought. That one cannot understand such histories without using the methods of those cultures. I am curious about the thoughts of historians on this.

Doesn't such a leap lead to an ultimate rejection of any ability to know or represent the past at all?

I was curious if anyone had any good sources regarding the naval actions of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Were there many naval actions in the war? The limited Wikipedia article doesn't go very in depth into this, focusing primarily on the land campaign.

Did the IJN get a chance to experiment with carrier borne aircraft in this conflict prior to there run in with European powers in WW2? Or was the conflict similar to the Ruso-Japanese war where the naval engagements consisted of traditional WW1 style Battleship conflict?

How modern was the Chinese navy at the time, both in ships and doctrine? What about the air arm? Did they have access to torpedo bombers?

The way the term is used is as if it is divorced from the fact he is the king. Were not all kings princes? Did his rank as king of England not take precedence? What is the relationship between the two titles?

I've been reading John R. Elting's Swords Around a Throne, and one distinction of rank has confused me: I understand that the equivalent of the British/American rank of Major was the Chef de Bataillon, who commanded a battalion in battle, unlike British majors. Similarly, I understand that a Colonel commanded a Regiment, which was a formation of two or three battalions.

What I don't understand is the rank of Major, equivalent to the British/US rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In contemporary British service, a Lieutenant Colonel commanded a battalion while a full colonel commanded the administrative unit of a regiment. However, since regiments were larger combat units in the Grande Armée and battalions were commanded by a Chef de Batallion, I can't work out what the responsibilities of a Major were. Did they command depot battalions or provisional regiments, or occupy some other administrative post?

I was recently reading some ancient Roman history books and stumbled across the "Vigiles Urbani" or watchmen of the city as some history sources call them, but with so little known about them due to them being a civilian force, how do we know what they really did (Apparently acting as Police, firemen and having Doctors on patrols) and how does this make them any different to the cohortes urbanae - The urban cohorts.

Anything you have that could enlighten me on real accounts or records to do with the Vigiles would be wonderful.

How long after the signing of the Declaration of Independence did it take for the King to receive his copy?

What was his reaction?

Did he send more troops? If so, how many more?

Was he gravely concerned about the rebellion?

Did the time it took for the information make a round trip (giving the copy to the King & him sending more troops) create a significant advantage for the Americans?

Is Mark Twain's "auto-biography" historically accurate? Some bloke I know is arguing that it's a nonfiction account of his life.

He was also the youngest naval aviator. Were the serving sons of high-wealth individuals afforded any particular favours in the war or were they the same as every other G.I.?

I'm looking for books about U.S.-Native American wars. The subject was glossed over or never mentioned in the history classes I have taken in the past. I'm interested whether they cover only one war or battle or are comprehensive.

How many people were present in areas such as Kazakhstan and Mongolia in the period of the Mongol invasions? I ask because today Mongolia has a tiny population of 3 million people, while many of the places they invaded, such as Iran, has 77 million people. Has central Asia, specifically mongolia, always been this far behind in population or is it a more recent occurrence?
