I assume this comes from nobles being officers. So that even inexperienced nobles would be, say, lieutenants, and thus outrank more experienced and capable commoners, like sergeants. How has this evolved over time, and why does it persist? How does treatment differ? (For example I know the Geneva Conventions have rules against making officers work, and I know even officer POWs, like in Coldizt, were assigned enlisted soldiers as servants)

As far as I know, many of the Celts on the British Isles began to primarily use Latin and Greek alphabets to write their languages in.

The Ogham script was used primarily in Old Irish, but were there not also Welsh uses as well?

So my primary question is: what exactly was wrong with the Ogham script? Was Roman influence really so large that their alphabet was somehow preferable?

Rather, I've occasionally heard people say that various non-Christian sources 'prove' Jesus existed. Is this correct?

All I can see from such documents is solid proof that Christianity existed in the late 1st or early 2nd century, which on its own doesn't seem like 'proof' or some 'smoking-gun' that a historical Jesus existed.

The USSR was issued a country code top level domain prior to it's collapse. They certainly must have known about the internet at that point (and probably before) so were there any plans regarding it's deployment and use within the USSR?

We often think of the great patriotic war in the soviet union as one of the most brutal and turning points of the war, as they were brutally slaughtered by the Germans, yet they turned the tide and fought back all the way to Berlin. However China was fighting against Japan for almost a decade (1937-1945). China was brutally destroyed in the first year and lost many of its coasts and the north was utterly lost. Japan was also far superior to china in terms of military technology and commanders. But Japan never fully conquered China. Why?

In the movie Django Unchained it's implied that Django and his wife are tracked down from running away in cotton fields in what looks to be late evening. It's implied they are caught that very evening. Would slaves usually be caught within a 12-24 hour period or would it take longer?

Any christian holy war that can be considered one, e.g. the Reconquista, the Baltic Crusades, and the campaigns in the Middle East against the Egyptians. Are there any records of groups of peasantry/soldiery/nobility that disagreed with the notion of crusading/using violence to enforce religion on those that they deemed as infidels and heretics in these wars?

This never really made sense to me. Couldn't it allow a president to effectively nullify a law he considers unjust, by pardoning anyone convicted of violating it? If this could happen, why hasn't it?

I remember as a kid my grandfather telling me about his ship being sunk and spending time in a life raft in the Ocean. He died many years ago, and I was too young to care about the details, but now that I'm older I'd love to find out as much as possible about the ship, crew, and the night it was sunk by the Germans, and share with my family.

The ship was the S. S. Robert Bacon and was sunk on July 13, 1943. I was able to find some basic information through Google searches, but I'm not sure my next steps.

I've really learned how influential merchant ships were in the war effort and how exposed they were. My grandfather was in the Navy and assigned to the ship.

Places like Frederick, harpers ferry, Gettysburg don't seem very strategic. Why were they so contested in the civil war?

I was looking into Bath Iron Works today, as the Zumwalt just went out to sea, and was astounded by the sheer number of huge ships produced there during WWII. What was it like to be building ships there? How many people were moved there to work? Any kind of information that gives an idea of the scale would be appreciated, thanks!

I have been able to acquire a large amount of literature of the impact of the Great Depression on Mexican-Americans, African-Americans and Native Americans. It just struck me that I have not really read a lot in detail about how Asian-Americans were impacted by the Great Depression.

I would appreciate some clarity on the subject and welcome any resources that you could point me to that would help me.
