I've been watching Ken Burns' documentary and they depict the soldiers fighting in formation standing close together. This seems like a dumb idea considering the gatling gun and the "shotgun" style projectiles they used in canons. Wouldn't the military leaders realize this and adopt better strategies?

It's been a long time since the fall of Third Reich in 1945. I guess I am a bit surprised that nowhere has there been a successful reinstatement of a Nazi government somewhere in the world.

Even today many individuals spread out share similar ideals. Why did it come to pass in 1933, yet there aren't nations since then?

I've been on a rap music kick, and I heard Gaddafi in a an old Rakim and an old Nas song, and I think there was a third reference I can't remember.

The only thing I know about the guy is that he and Nelson -greatest person to have ever lived- Mandela were bros. and he and Idi Amin were bros.

Why was Gaddafi popular among these rappers? If I hadn't read about Mandela's life I would never have even heard about him until his recent downfall.

So why was he so well known?

Me and a friend of mine have been in an argument for a while now. He was playing Call of Duty and a friend of mine asked why there is a gun called the "Speakeasy". My friend seems to believe that the speakeasy was a type of Tommy Gun used (like in Bugsy Malone). However I told him he was wrong and that a speakeasy was a place where people would drink during prohibition. Has the word speakeasy ever been used to refer to a gun in real life?

I know that Nazism has co-opted a number of eastern ideas and symbols, and the number 88 is auspicious in Buddhism, but is there any evidence this number held any significance to the original Nazi's themselves?

Cursory online browsing suggests 88 signifies HH meaning 'Heil Hitler' but I was unable to find any evidence to support this other than common acceptance.

My grandfather gave me this medal of his when I was very young, and I'm curious what it is. Can anyone identify it? I believe it is from when he served in the navy during WW2. Thank you Picture in comments

Apart from Egypt was there any other major African nations at that time and would the Romans have come into contact with them?

It seems the US had a very large army and navy by the end of the Africa campaign, their troops were at least somewhat seasoned, they were reading the Germans' signals, and they had already greatly weakened the German Luftwaffe. Why did they instead attack in Italy when they could have gone for the German throat much sooner?

What sources (if any) can you or can't you use? Was it difficult to be original? How long did it take you?

When I read about ancient battles on wikipedia, the losing side's losses are almost never their full force. Usually a good chunk of the army escapes, many of them infantry. How did they do this?

Once the losing side started running away, I would assume this would give even more of an advantage to the winning side. It's MUCH easier to attack someone running away than it is to defend against someone running after you.

I can understand the cavalry getting away but many of the survived were infantry. Did the winning side not chase after them? If they did, what prevented them from mowing everyone down?

So in other words, when an army lost, why wasn't EVERYONE wiped out on the losing side?

The history books only ever tell us that it succeeded. Was there a back up plan? I know Churchill was leery of the idea and insisted on taking Sicily first, so I assume there must be something.

I'm sure most people knew of those geographically close to them. I live in Ontario and learned a fair bit about the tribes in my area (the Iroquois, Mohawk, etc) and I know they were definitely aware of each other but how far did this knowledge extend? I'm sure the large Incan empire would be quite knowledgeable, far more so than an isolated Inuit tribe, but would they have known about other large civilizations like the Mayans or Aztecs? I'm sorry if this question is too generalized but is there anything that might stand out and surprise the average person? Thanks in advance for any answers.
