From my limited knowledge it seems like incidents such as these were completely out of step with previous generations and indeed the generations since WW2. What caused this societal change? Did winning the Russo-Japanese war combined with aggressive expansionism give an inflated sense of ego to the Japanese and mob mentality took over?

During the middle ages the owl was seen as a sinister animal and seeing them/being identified with them was not something to be desired. I came across a picture of an owl in a 1624 Brussels emblem book (French/Latin) where the owl is associated with knowledge and learning. Does anyone know when the owl's association changed or does anyone have an earlier example of the owl as a sign of knowledge?

In the movie Gettysburg, the character of Chamberlain makes a statement along the lines of "We're an army fighting to set other men free. That hasn't happened often in the history of the world." Now, without getting in to the details of how close that is to anything Chamberlain ever said, or going in to the how accurate a statement that might be in the American Civil War, it did make me consider a question.

Have there been any historic wars, prior to American Civil War (1861-1865), where either a major motivation, or major result, was the general manumission of slavery in a conquered realm? If so, was this out of some kind of moral imperative ("Slavery is wrong, don't do it!") or more of a punitive action ("You lost the war, so you lose your slaves and suffer the economic harm coming from that fact.")

Namibia and South Africa have a large proportion of white citizens. Of course their history is different, but both Zimbabwe and Mozambique used to have a large white population too. As far as I understand, this white population only left after the start of persecution by Mugabe in the 90's/00's and the civil war in Mozambique.

I have never heard of something like that (persecution/large civil war) in Botswana, a country that is doing better than other countries in the region, even Namibia and South Africa. Yet most white people decided to leave. Why?

It was from the perspective of several campaigns in to the nation. The book did a good job of painting a picture of the relevant cast of characters as well as immersive descriptions of socio-economic life.

I believe it was published in the aughts. It was the only history book that read "cinematically" for me. Read it all in one sitting and put it back on the shelf at barnes and noble (sorry B&N).

There is literature (Engels regarding working class Londoners) talking about the plight of the urban poor, but surely this would not have influenced upper levels of decision makers in Paris. I know that the renewal was done at the behest of Napoleon III, but is this the first case of it being done without any "need" for re-building?

Based on the rather short wiki article on them, the Anglo-Irish seem to have been a prominent community before independence. However, I'm struggling to find any sources on precisely what happened to them after the formation of the Republic of Ireland. Did they "return" to England or remain in Ireland? If they stayed, did they retain any distinguishing cultural practices or were they simply absorbed into the Irish mainstream? Can one still find wealthy, RP-speaking people who closely identify with England in Dublin?

Also what happened to the noble titles many of these families had? Are they still "officially" recognized in the modern republic? In Britain?

Hello everyone! I'm currently reading an interesting book on ancient Egyptian history and there's quite a lot of reference to things written in the ancient Egyptian language. The book goes over in detail how the hieroglyphs were deciphered, but I'm still not clear about how we are capable of knowing the meaning of ancient Egyptian words.

Just intuitively, it seems to me that decoding an ancient language requires knowing the phonetic value of the symbols used to write it, as well as being able to know the meaning of the words. I can sound out words in Thai, for example, by reading the symbols for their phonetic value, but I rarely know what they mean. So far this description of the process seems to focus on learning the phonetic value of the hieroglyphs, but I'm still in the dark as to how we know what those words mean once we've been able to read them.

Am I just missing something obvious? I'd love some clarification. Thanks!

I understand he was exiled during the invasion of Italy into Ethiopia. I also had heard he had traveled to the Caribbean, and quite possibly Jamaica during this time.

A Jamaican acquaintance had very firmly stated that Haile Selassie's first visit to Jamaica was in 1966, years after WWII had ended.
