If yes, do we know how far along the Roman Empire got before deciding it was not a viable option?

I know under the Late Republic Senators where recruited to fill officer roles, but I want to know if the Romans ever established something like the modern officer corps made up of career officers who transferred between line units and HQ posting as they moved up the ranks. Did this ever happen in the Roman Army or was this strictly a more modern invention?

While Anna was able to talkm to many of the participants, she was not actually present (or even alive) for most of the event that occurr. The people she would likey have spoken to would likely have had an interest in glorifying Alexios (if out of fear than anything else). Most importantly Anna is Alexios' daughter. Even when describing his initial defeats to the Normans, Anna always diverts blame from Alexios, instead pinning it on circumstances (the empire's back was against the wall financially and militarily) or exalting the abilities of the enemy.

It just seems very odd to me that the English would've decided to make up our own word for the other countries instead of calling them what they call themselves.

Soon after the end of the Pacific War, many of the countries, such as Vietnam and Indonesia, occupied by Empire of Japan during the Pacific War either achieved independence or started wars of independence that eventually led to their independence.

Was this rapid decolonization of Asia a direct result of the Empire of Japan starting the Pacific War, Or was the decolonization of Asia inevitable already before the Pacific War?

Also, did the decolonization of other countries in Asia contribute to the Independence of India in 1947 in any way?

I've had to watch this documentary for a college course I'm taking, and I'm wondering if there are any historians here specializing in Aboriginal Canadian history who can verify if any of the information in the video is correct. I understand that the Residential School system is seen as something that was brutal and often described as a cultural genocide, but I have trouble believing that the information presented in the documentary is correct. I’d like to know why wasn’t Alain Turing pardoned by Churchill or the British Government that succeeded him at the time? Considering his contribution to the war effort and to defeating Nazi Germany, couldn’t his ‘condition as a homosexual’ being considered secondary to all of it?

I’d also like to know, as a secondary question, if there was no movement back then to grant him pardon?

Does the race reflect any of the real challenges and situations of true settler life historically, or is it a completely modern (and sanitized) contrivance? I was reading about it, and it (Wikipedia) said that it wasn't popular with the allies, but I'm wondering why? The article on the Megali Idea gave no explanation as to their motives and why they didn't support it, and I'm at a loss.

Recently I've been reading quite a bit about the Eastern front between Germany and the Soviet Union during the second world war. It has been said that the majority of Soviet industry was based in the western portion of the union. As Operation Barbarossa commenced and German forces closed in on major industrial centers the Soviets would come to move vast quantities of factory equipment east to the Ural regions of Russia. As is often the case, little more is mentioned than the fact that industrial equipment was put aboard freight trains and shipped east.

Obviously this must have had a major impact on the country and the war itself. My questions to you are

• How much of their industry would come to be transferred east? What did they manage to move vs. what had to be left behind/destroyed before it was captured by invading forces?

• The movement of large portions of industry certainly must have had an effect on their ability to wage war. From the little reading I've done on the battles around Rzhev in 1942 I've come to an understanding that there was a critical shortage of munitions at the time?

• I figure there weren't a bunch of empty factory halls awaiting this equipment as it arrived in 1941/1942. How did they manage in building the new accommodations/infrastructure to support it?

• I've also read that many of the factory workers were transferred along with the equipment itself. Would most of these workers continue living within the Urals after the war had ended or did they return to their homes in the west?
