My friend ran across this picture on the internet and saved it, but cant remember where he got it from or who it is.
Reason I'm asking is because the man in the picture and myself look eeerily similar! Its driving me mad!

I cover Argentina as a part of my job and one thing I don't get is the cult of personality around Juan and Eva Peron, pseudo fascists. I think there have been 2 non-Peronists elected to the Presidency for 6 years combined in the past 40 years or something ridiculous like that.
What is the deal here? Also, why is it so undefined? Where could I find some good sources on Peronism / Argentine history (in English)?

So I'm a Jr High US History teacher and for our next unit I'm looking for a great three or so paragraphs from a slave narrative, preferably from the early-mid 1800's. I've gone through a bunch, but am not finding quite what I'm looking for, which is something that details the hardships and struggles of day-to-day life. If there is an emphasis on religion, cotton, extended family, all the better.
The colloquial phrasing is great in many of them but if it is so disjointed as to make it distracting, it may distract my students. Anyone have any specific suggestions or links?

This graph was posted on /r/dataisbeautiful today.
I was curious if there were any known reasons for what appears to be a fairly consistent lessening of American facial hair from 1887 into modern times. Was this just a cultural shift, or were there actual efforts to get men to go clean-shaven?
Also, concerning the "spikes" in the chart, do any of those years coincide with special events that made facial hair more popular?
EDIT - Crap, wrong version of "there", oh well, it's stuck now

Who's job was it to go around lighting every single lamp?
I assume they used candles, how long did they last?

A lot of music from way back when uses the term gay to describe being happy, but now if you were to do so it would have a completely different meaning. I'm wondering when and why this change occurred.

The question is in the title. I understand that the crusades were obviously religiously based but what other motives were present?

Dear historians of AskHistorians,
How much is travel the part of the life of being a professional historian or history professor? Does one often travel to sites for research or book writing? Also where does travelling fit into the historical method?
Thanks!

How exactly did the mere ideological concept of communism translate from paper to palpable reality, and then to devastation? I'm quite aware of the extensiveness question like these bear, but a thorough analysis of different crucial factors that came into play would be greatly appreciated.

Characterizations of life under Batista are difficult to find, since most of the literature surrounding Batista is about the man himself or has otherwise been revised by the current powers at be in Cuba.
What was life like for the middle class? Did Batista follow through on many of his social and political promises, or did he welch and assume absolute authority? What reasons would the peasantry have for supporting Batista/selling out the 26 July Movement in the Sierra Mestra, outside of immediate money to be made?

After seeing this post charting the changing trends in mens facial hair over the last ~150 years, the comments got me wondering about what really prompted the decline of men having beards mustaches and sideburns. Several factors are posited in the thread, from WW I gas trenches, to the invention of the disposable razor, and while i'm sure theres a conglomeration of factors, i was hoping you fine folks could provide some more concrete evidence into the decline of "whisker sculpting"
